I had really wanted to do a post with 20 books I’m looking forward to in 2020 because, you know, all those 20s seemed fun. Unfortunately, my body couldn’t quite handle all that as these types of posts are a lot of work, but I can at least talk about a few books! So I chose five books I’m excited for right now that are either standalones or the first book in a new series. Some of them may already be released by the time I get this posted, but oh well, I’m still looking forward to them since I haven’t read/listened to any of these yet!
Highfire by Eoin Colfer // Jan 28
This urban fantasy is about a lonely vodka-drinking, Flashdance-loving, Netflix-bingeing dragon. As if that wasn’t enough to make me want to read it already, he then saves a teen(?) from a crooked cop, and the two form a bond, and it’s all set in the Louisiana bayou, and it just sounds hilarious and great.
Daughter from the Dark by Marina & Sergey Dyachenko // Feb 11
Another fantasy, this one is about a man ending up stuck with a creepy little girl who won’t leave his apartment and her monstrous teddy bear protector. The premise already has me intrigued, and I’ve also heard the main character is flawed (which I love) and that the relationship between the characters is complex and interesting.
Finna by Nino Cipri // Feb 25
I believe this is a novella, and a sci-fi one at that since it’s about portals and people traveling through them. I’m most excited though about the nonbinary rep and the recently broken-up relationship between the two main characters who are forced to work together despite the difficulty of the recent break-up. I love books that explore relationship dynamics that we don’t often get to see.
Repo Virtual by Corey J. White // Apr 21
Cyberpunk! I always want more cyberpunk, and this one sounds good with its augmented reality, virtual repo men, thievery, and a sentient AI.
Star Daughter by Shveta Thakrar // Aug 11
To be honest, I don’t remember exactly what this is about. I know the main character is the daughter of a star, and that’s all I need to know. I was sold at that alone. She’s part star! How cool is that?!
Highfire’s not one I’d have on my radar probably, but with a description like that! Sounds like it could be lotta fun. Portals are the shit so yeah I’m definitely down for Finni. The relationship angle just makes it sound even better, I agree.
Repo Virtual sounds awesome. Yes to more cyberpunk. I don’t get nearly enough. Seriously, where is all the good cyberpunk??? And virtual repo men? I’m all over that.
It just sounds so great! I really do love those complicated relationships like in Finna, glad it’s not just me. Right?! Where IS all the good cyberpunk??
I’ve got High Fire on request from the library. Sounds awesome!
The US cover is much nicer than the UK cover though. *goes away to sulk*
Hopefully we’ll both love it! I hate it when other countriess get the prettier covers lol.
I hope you enjoy all these! Highfire sounds hilarious.
Thanks! It does sound like it’s gonna be great!
I usually shun fantasy and am attracted to sci-fi books, but for some reason Star Daughter sounds like something I might give a chance to! Thank you for always highlighting quirky books I never hear mentioned anywhere else.
The star thing just sounds so cool, how could anyone resist? 😛
I’m excited for all of these! I hadn’t realized Daughter from the Dark was a standalone. I thought it was a sequel, so I haven’t paid much attention to it. Now I’ll have to really consider it, because it sounds so good!
As far as I know, it’s a standalone, so hopefully I wasn’t wrong lol. Becuase it does sound really good!
Highfire sounds really fun!! I hadn’t heard of it before.
I hope you get to read and enjoy all of these.

It does sound fun! Thank you 🙂
Such interesting covers too! That first one caught my eye because I used to love the Artemis Fowl series as a kid
Covers are so good nowadays, right? I never read the Artemis Fowl series, I didn’t even know they wrote that!
Daughter From the Dark sounds super creepy but cool?! I didn’t know about the Artemis Fowl author’s new series, neat. And it’s super cool for someone to be part star. Great list! It would have been epic for you to choose 20 books but posts like those are hell to put together. 😉
There are easily 20 I’m looking forward to, but man, these posts really are a lot of work lol. Daughter from the Dark does sound creepy but cool!
I absolutely love the cover for Star Daughter but I do have my policy of waiting for reviews before adding anything to my tbr anymore — it’s for the best for me, honestly — so I will be curious to hear what you and others think about it! And I have been hearing a lot of excitement and good things about Colfer’s new book as well even if it is quite different from his others.
I’ve never read Colfer’s other books, so I get to g ointo this one with a blank slate 😛
Oh gosh, I am excited about so many books this year. I actually need to start making posts like this – I have some based around genres. Highfire sounds fantastic!!! I might need to add that to my list.

These posts are fun to make! I’m super late to responding and am actually listening to Highfire right now, it’s really fun!
