Two years ago I recommended some funny sci-fi/fantasy podcasts, and I’m back with more!
I started listening to podcasts because of a head nerve problem I developed, I needed things to listen to that didn’t require looking at, but now I just really like podcasts. I like having something when I need a break from books. I like bingeing them, but I also like being caught up and having a new episode to look forward to every week or two. And since many of the ones I listen to are funny, I like knowing I have stuff to make me laugh, because I really need a bit of that every day.
So here are some more great podcasts to check out that will hopefully make you laugh or smile too!
*I’ll include how much I’ve listened to of each podcast at the time of this review since most of these are ongoing.
*I’m sure you can find most of these wherever you listen to podcasts, but if you’re new to podcasts and need a suggestion, I use the Stitcher app on my phone! (Except for the last one on this list, which is a Spotify exclusive.)
Dungeons & Daddies
(Currently on Season 2)
No other podcast to date has made me laugh as much as this one has. It’s a real play D&D podcast about four dads adventuring around the Forgotten Realms (a fantasy world) to save their sons, and it’s packed to the brim with hilarity and heart. They also do a fantastic job of editing to make it very snappy, without all the pausing and thinking and looking things up that many D&D podcasts have. (It makes the first episode a bit overwhelming, but it gets easier once you remember all the names and connect them with the players’ voices.) Not that there’s anything wrong with unedited D&D podcasts if you like that! But I have a hard time keeping my attention on those, so this fast pace works perfectly for me. I truly laugh out loud so much while listening to this, and I can’t recommend it enough! Season 1 recently finished, and there’s also a 3-episode series in which they play as dogs and cats, and now they’re on Season 2!
Who Killed Avril Lavigne?
(Complete, 1 Season)
This is a silly, purposefully ridiculous story about a teen from 2022 getting sent back to 2005 to stop aliens from swapping Avril Lavigne with a clone*, or something like that, and it showed up at the perfect time for me! I had been so badly wanting something with ’00s nostalgia, but it doesn’t really exist yet, maybe because the 2000s weren’t actually that long ago. But this! This is it! And it’s full of pop punk / emo references and an original pop punk soundtrack with songs that are so perfect I feel like I’ve heard them before. And it’s funny! (“Don’t say bitch, just say mom,” really got me.) If you were a teen in the 2000s and a pop punk lover, like me, I think you’ll like this.
*When I was looking up the podcast summary, I discovered that this is based on an actual conspiracy theory that Avril Lavigne died and was replaced by a clone or lookalike or something. So yeah. That’s a thing.
(Currently on Season 1)
As the name suggests, this is kind of like D&D, but a sitcom! There are four main characters (and a DM), and they run and work and live at a tavern/bed-and-breakfast in a fantasy world. There’s no big quest, but each episode has a little plot to be resolved. So it’s quite narrative, but improvised, and sometimes things go right or wrong depending on the roll of a die. The characters are sort of exaggerated and ridiculous, and they get up to a lot of silly shenanigans, and it’s fun!
Hello from the Magic Tavern
(Currently on Season 4)
You might’ve heard of this one since it seems to be on every podcast list. It’s an improv podcast about a guy who ends up in another realm, but he has his equipment with him, so he starts recording from a tavern over there, along with a wizard and a shapeshifter who mostly takes the form of a badger, and they mostly interview different guests. But it’s a lot weirder than that description makes it sound. I’ll be honest (since I try not to mislead my readers), it’s not a podcast I spend each week itching for the next episode of, it’s usually not one that makes me laugh out loud, but it’s kind of chill and silly and weird, and it can be nice to have something chill to listen to sometimes.
The Two Princes
(Complete, 3 Seasons)
This podcast is SO CUTE! It’s about rival princes who are supposed to kill each other to save their kingdoms but end up falling in love instead. It’s not quite as much of a humor podcast as the others on this list, but it does have its funny moments. It’s already complete, there are three seasons, and they’re not too long, so it’s not a huge commitment. And it is so much fun, and so queer, and so adorable, and the last season is even a musical! It’s been months, and I still sometimes listen to the soundtrack because it’s seriously fantastic and also brings back all the good, mushy feels of the story. In fact, I’ve been thinking about listening to the whole series again. I just adored this one!
