Poetry: A Collection of Some Short but [Bitter]Sweet Poems

So. I rarely share my poetry because it’s always been a very personal thing for me, something I write for myself and myself only (unless I’m specifically writing it for a contest or a gift or something). But April is National Poetry Month! And I have decided to share a few of my shorter poems!

These are all years old, nothing recent. Some of these weren’t written with anyone or anything in particular in mind, some of them were, but I guess you’ll never know which. I gotta keep some mysteries alive πŸ˜‰

Cosmic

Place your ear right near my heart;
Hear it beating, beating, beating,
In the shadow of yours, cosmic indeed,
Never completing, never retreating.

Found

I rarely wear red and white,
I’m certainly not a man,
I not very fond of large crowds,
And people don’t ask where I am.
Although we seem nothing alike,
We share a common ground;
Waldo’s dirty little secret
Is that he wants to be found.

Give Me Your Hand

*This is actually just the last two lines of a longer poem, but these were the only two lines I really liked.*

Give me your hand, and I’ll hold it in mine, but first there’s one thing you should know:
By hand I really mean heart, and by hold I mean never let go.

Black is Not the Night

Black is not the night with
                    the moon and the stars,
                    the insides of cars,
                    the neons at bars.
Black is the night with
                    the poems written,
                    the thoughts so smitten,
                    the heart that’s bitten.

Drowning in the Ground

This gravity
Will pull on me
Until I’ve drowned
Within the ground
For in the air
My lungs do dare
To breathe the sky;
I want to fly.

Nice. Poetry a;ways seems so personal I would be about sharing it too. And it certainly stretches different writing muscles, at least in my experience. I think I like Black Is Not The Night and Give Me Your Hand the best. I like the imagery of Night with the moon and stars, the neon, and the heart being more internal. Hand jsut has a cool message.

I figured these were all kinda vague enough that people could just interpret them in their own way without learning anything too personal about me, haha. But that’s one of the great things about poetry I think, how it can be interpreted completely differently by different people. But anyway, I’ve written far more poetry than stories in my life, so this is the writing muscle I’m used to stretching. It’s definitely harder for me to get into story writing mode I’ve noticed. I’m glad you like those two πŸ™‚

*whispers* Idk if I’m supposed to play favorites with my own poems, but that’s my favorite too πŸ˜‰ I was actually partly inspired by you to do this post since you share your micropoetry all the time! Btw, I finished Starfighter Ch. 4, and I totally see why you said Keeler and Encke are adorable now—THEY SO ARE <3

      1. Cee Arr

Ha, I won’t tell them which is your fave, dw πŸ˜‰

Awwwww! You have no idea how happy that makes me XD

AND YES THEY ARE SO FREAKING ADORABLE AND MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS!!!! (And maybe give Cain and Abel some this-is-what-a-healthy-relationship-looks-like tips!)

        1. Kristen Burns

Seriously, if the series had been about them from the start, I’d have loved it right away, haha. But actually, now that I know about the commander’s plans and stuff, I feel like maybe Cain isn’t as bad as he seemed, and I could get behind their relationship if they, like, address the abusive part and Cain tells the truth and they talk things out. And come on, you have to admit the vodka and cigarette picnic was hilarious lol.

I saw the picture on Pixabay one day and saved it because I knew I just HAD to use it for something! Lol. And it was perfect for this post.

I didn’t know anyone would actually want to read any of my poems?? But yay I’m glad you love them! You always know how to make me smile πŸ˜€

      1. Dragonfly

Oh man pixabay is my nemesis like NetGalley I just get lost there for hours. Glad I made u smile now in return go write and publish a poetry book so I can smile (or more like grin) too ?

        1. Kristen Burns

*gasp* NG is supposed to be your best friend, not your nemesis! I’m telling πŸ˜› And oh no, I’m sorry to disappoint my number #1 fan, but I have no plans to publish a poetry book. Maybe I’ll post some more on my blog though πŸ˜€

YOUR poems! How lovely πŸ™‚ I’m glad you shared them.
I used to write poems myself, but very few and only when I was like… 16-20 (I’m 28 now). Almost never in my own language either, always just in English somehow. But I am not sure where they are now πŸ™‚ hiding in some cupboard for sure…

  4. Lola

I used to write a lot of poems when I was a teenager, it helped me sort through things and get my thoughts out. I actually wrote a lot in that time about my thoughts and emotions as that seemed to be the only way to organize everything inside of me. I haven’t written any of them in a long time though. I do agree that poems are really personal. But I think most writing is pretty personal in a way.

I think my favorite of these is Found, I actually re-read that one a few times to make sure I got what it was saying. The first time I read it I was a bit confused when you suddenly mentioned Waldo. So I had to re-read it knowing what was coming next.

But the others are great too. I like the Black is Not the Night as it paints a pretty vivid image of night and the different sides of it. And even though the Give me Your Hand is only two lines, it says so much in those two lines. Very powerful!

I kinda like poems, but at the same time I rarely read them? They always seem so cryptic and vague and I am never fully sure if I really know what it’s supposed to mean, but that’s also kinda the charm of them?

    1. Kristen Burns

Same, I wrote a lot more when I was younger and then a lot for a couple years when things were really rough with my illness and other stuff, but I haven’t written much in the past couple years, and I guess that makes sense with what you said about using it to sort out emotions and thoughts. I suppose all writing is personal in a way, it’s all definitely scary to share publicly lol, but poetry is usually, for me, more about my own emotions or thoughts concentrated whereas something like a story is fictional.

I don’t know if other countries have those Where’s Waldo? books, and I know he has a different name in some countries, so Found probably won’t make sense to anyone who doesn’t know about those or realize what I was referencing.

Thanks! That’s exactly what I was going for with the night poem, showing the different sides of it. And thanks about the Hand one too <3

I'm exactly the same---I love the little poems I find on Pinterest and stuff, yet I never read poetry books or really seek poetry out. It's strange. But I do think the way everyone can interpret a poem differently to suit their own experiences is definitely part of their charm!

  5. Litha Nelle

I used to write a lot of poetry as a coping mechanism, but then I switched to fantasy writing and I haven’t done much since (I think because it takes more conscious effort for poetry). I like Found the best of all your poems- I think it’s just the perfect length.

Thank you so much for sharing some of your poetry with us. Sometimes, sharing writing is not easily done. I really like your poems, as well. I think my absolutely favourite is Black Is Not the Night, but Cosmic comes pretty close too. And yes, I do write poetry. One day, I hope to publish some…

    1. Kristen Burns

Yeah, I think I’m finally getting more used to sharing poetry, but the first time was so nerve-wracking! Glad you like those two πŸ™‚ You should totally go for it with getting your poetry published!

  7. Bookworm Brandee

I used to write poetry quite often, Kristen. I suppose it was my angsty, younger self needing to get feelings out in some creative way. πŸ™‚ Thanks SO MUCH for sharing some of your poems. It’s neat to hear your voice, even if it isn’t your current voice, in this manner. I really like the Waldo one. LOL And Give Me Your Hand. But they’re all wonderful. πŸ˜€

    1. Kristen Burns

For some reason I still find that sometimes poems are the best way to express my feelings. Normally I’m so wordy, but with poems I can say so much with so few words. Thank you, glad you like them!

  8. suzanna

I always think poetry is so hard to write. You have to be so careful choosing words.
    So brave for sharing.
Love them. My fav is the last lines of Give me your Hand πŸ™‚

    1. Kristen Burns

For me, I’m such a wordy person most of the time, so I kinda like how poetry is emotion or meaning condensed. It’s the only time I don’t use seven million words lol.

      Thank you!

  9. Teenella

I love give me your hand so much. I honestly wish I could get the full poem. Oh! And do you have a published collection of your poetry? I’m a poet as well and i love reading poems
