Cover Characteristics: Black, White, & Red Book Covers

What’s black and white and re(a)d all over?

These book covers!

*cricket sounds*

Now that that’s out of the way…

I know I’ve used a lot of this week’s covers before, but that’s because they’re awesome. So in your face. I know that didn’t make any sense, but my brain is too hopped up on all the gorgeous redness of these covers right now for something as mundane as sense!

No but really, I think we all knew I would be doing this topic one day. I mean, black, white, and red, is there a better combination? (Don’t answer that. Unless you’re going to say yes, in which case you may go ahead and answer so we can bond over a shared love of awesome color combinations.)

Alright, that’s enough rambling for one day. Let us go forth and look at pretty book covers!

Cover Characteristics is a weekly meme hosted at Sugar & Snark. I went rogue this week, so my topic is:

I love all of these because whoever designed them is a color genius, and all the artwork/designs are gorgeous.

My Favorite #1:
Shades of Magic Series by V.E. Schwab

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab | reading, books, book covers, cover love, black, white, red

I haven’t read this series (yet?), so I have no idea if I like them, but can someone please just buy the paperbacks for me already??! I LOVE these covers so much I can hardly stand it!

My Favorite #2:
Ink: Fine Lines by Bella Roccaforte

Actually can someone just buy me the paperbacks for this series too? This book was the best read-it-based-on-the-cover decision I ever made. Gorgeous cover, and a story that sucked me in.

Nice intro lol. I actually haven’t seen most of these before, they’re mostly new to me. Blood and Starlight is the bomb! I like Girl of Myth and Legend too- I don’t know if those are supposed to be stars in the branches or what, but that cover rules. I kinda like the Crow Moon one too. Ink Fine Lines is probably my #2, but Blood and Starlight – that’s my fave. I want that book.

Nice collage- black/white/red is seriously a nice combo.

I couldn’t not do the black, white, red all over joke lol. Blood & Starlight is definitely awesome! I want ALL these books though lol. I only have three of them (well, the ebooks). But actually they all do sound like good books. I was tempted to take Girl of Myth and Legend when it was on NetGalley a while back, but I decided not to. Might still read it one day.

I do love me my black, white, and red combo. I was thinking I’d try to do all the different colors if I’m able to find enough for other colors, though of course I won’t love those as much 😛

I admit to loving this color combination. It’s so striking with its contrast and really draws my eye. 😉 At first glance, I’d say my favorite is Days of Blood and Starlight. I love the mask on the girl’s face, I love the font…it’s haunting. But I really like Crow Moon as well. A LOT. I’m not an art person so I probably am not using the proper words but I like the silhouette of the girl with the crow superimposed. I like the way the image (silhouette) looks like the film was exposed to light and messed up. And I like the contrast of the black and white used for the title. But that’s just me. I like your favorites too! 🙂

It is such a great color combination!!! Crow Moon is definitely gorgeous (and I understood everything you were saying, though I guess I’m not exactly an art expert myself?). But then, I think all of these are gorgeous lol.

The US covers for V.E. Schwab books aren’t nearly as pretty though :-/ But ugh these ones are just too gorgeous for words! I haven’t read Laini Taylor either, but I love all the covers for that series and I think it might be on my TBR.

  3. Rowena

Those are all gorgeous covers! My favorite is Ink: Fine Lines by Bella Roccaforte. The girl on the cover is gorgeous and I love her hair color! Red is actually my favorite color so I adore this color combo!

  4. Mareli Thalwitzer

This is sooooo beautiful!!! My blog is also the same colors! Love the way you grouped them together, your collage is simply marvelous. My favorites are all the V.E. Schwap ones. Great work Kristen!

Thanks! And yay for black, white, and red blogs! I mean, mine’s also got a tiny bit of pink in it lol, but pink is technically just red with some white in it, so… Anyway, I do so love those V.E. Schwab covers too!

    1. Kristen Burns

Those covers are just absolutely amazing! I don’t even know what it is since all of these covers have the same colors. But I think you’re right, they’re so dramatic that they draw your eyes to them.

I think my favorite red/black/white cover is the reprint of The Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause. It’s very delicate, with the two leaves forming a heart and the silhouettes of the main couple inside.

    1. Kristen Burns

I just looked it up, and I can see why you like that one! I could’ve used it had I known about it lol. It also sounds like a good book, I’ve put it on my TBR! Have you read it?

      1. Catherine

I have, although it’s been a while. I make a point – or rather, used to – of reading any and all vampire YA and noting how the general trends progress over time. The Silver Kiss came out all the way back in 1992, alongside the later books in the original Vampire Diaries quartet.

In my opinion, it’s less a story about a vampire than a story with a vampire. The vampire as a metaphor for the wondering of what is after death, and the story about Zoe’s acceptance of self and the impending death of her mother.

        1. Kristen Burns

I read a lot of vampire books, both YA and adult, but more self-published than mainstream, so I don’t know if that really accurately portrays the trends. That must be cool though so see how they change over time! But this one does still sound like a good book.

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! It is rather dramatic, isn’t it? But so pretty! I’d also really like to read the V.E. Schwab books! Fantastic covers, and interesting-sounding stories.

  6. Lola

That’s pretty neat to see all those covers with the same red white and black color scheme next to each other like that. And yes I had assumed you would do this topic eventually. I like the cover for Ink as well and it’s great when you pick up a book mostly because of the cover and it turns out great! The Shades of Magic series covers aren’t one that would get my attention to pick up the books, but they do stand out. And I like how each book uses a different color for the background, so they are a blend of red, white and black when you put them next to each other like that. Great picks!

    1. Kristen Burns

Hahaha and I’ll probably do it again 😛 And yes, it’s awesome when stories actually end up matching their cover in awesomeness! But ugh, those Shades of Magic books should’ve used different colors for the human silhouettes too! Because now two of them are black and one is white but one should’ve been red! It just bothers me that they missed that opportunity lol. Thanks!

      1. Lola

Yes that was what I was thinking too. When I was typing that comment I first typed how I liked they varied the figure and background and then took another look and realized they had two black ones, one of them should’ve been red instead.

I don’t know the majority of these books, but I’m highly interested in those covers! I’ll have to look them up :3
I have read the DoSaB series and loved it AND its covers!
I have yet to read the Shades of Magic series, but I recently bought the first one and SO can’t wait to start reading! But I have the other style of covers (still black, white, & red!) and like those better due to the whimsy (I guess) of the geometric designs. Fell in love with them! And I need to read Vicious.
    Crow Moon looks beautiful!
    Great cover choices!

    1. Kristen Burns

Yeah, all the covers in that series are gorgeous! I just don’t like those other covers for the V.E. Schwab books though, I dunno why. But I always love seeing how everyone’s taste is book covers differs so much! Vicious is the one I really want to try even though the Shades of Magic covers are prettier lol. Thanks!
