Cover Characteristics: Book Covers featuring Silhouettes

You don’t even KNOW how tempted I was to make this week all red, white and black covers. I don’t know why so many silhouette covers are those colors, but I’m sure not complaining.

Anyway, this was not hard, but it still wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be to find ten I really loved. Part of the problem is that there’s a big overlap between this topic and book covers featuring circus, and I also had to talk myself out of using a bunch of those all over again, considering we just did that a couple weeks ago.

Ok I can’t think of anything to say or any good way to wrap up this intro because I’m tired, so just… have at the covers lol.

Cover Characteristics is a weekly meme hosted at Sugar & Snark. This week’s topic is:

I’m running out of things to say about silhouettes, but really, it’s red, black, and white. I need no other reason to like it.

My Favorite:
Shades of Magic Series by V.E. Schwab

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab | books, reading, book covers, cover love, sihouettes
A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab | books, reading, book covers, cover love, sihouettes

I. Love. These. Covers. Hands down, easily my favorites on the list. There was no agonizing indecision this time lol. I don’t even know why these are my favorites, how can one silhouette be so much better than another? But you see it too right? How gorgeous these are?

I don’t know which would be my most favorite so I’ll pick a few. 😉 (yeah, that’s how I roll!) I really like the Schwab ones. A lot. But I also like Conway’s. I like the reflections. I own a few books you have listed here. I know…I know, you’re shocked. lol And I’ve actually read The Night Circus. It’s a good read as well as a lovely cover. 🙂

Even I pick a few sometimes 😛 Of course you have a few of the books in my post, hahaha. I have the Paper Magician ones, and that’s it, but I’d definitely like to read some of the others, The Night Circus being one of them 🙂

What a wonderful idea, Kristen! I can’t pick a favorite. I like them all. I did note that two of them feature a girl who seems to be floating. The one on The Midnight Society looks like a contortionist, so perhaps that ties in with your circus theme. 🙂 I do like the colors on The Nightmare Charade, perhaps because they’re different from the rest of your examples.

I also noticed that the girl in The Midnight Society has a very flexible back, haha, so I love that you noticed that too. Unfortunately I don’t think it has any circus in (I remember reading the blurb since most things with “night” in the title also catch my attention, but I don’t remember exactly what it’s about.) The Nightmare does have a nice color, and I just like that one overall 🙂

oh.. when I saw the post on your home page I was like.. hummm… not sure I like that kind of covers too much. BUT THESE COVERS ARE GREAT! good selection K! My favorite is Crow Moon (Though I could barely look at it! It was next to Night Circus!) 🙂
Looking forward to the red, white and black covers 🙂

I like the font of The Midnight Society too, and Undertow might be my favorite- I’m not even sure why, I just like that one. The solitary girl, the blue background, the trees – it all works. I wouldn’t have even noticed the reflections on those if you hadn’t mentioned it. 🙂 I like The Nightmare Charade though too, a lot- I used one of her books as well but the one with the boat is probably the best one.

The Neverland Wars is nice, and just speaking for myself I thin it would be the most striking on the bookshelf- I bet it jumps right out- the only thing I don’t like are the crossed swords. I think it would be better without that- but whatever. Crow Moon is nice too, not even sure why I like it but I do.

Undertow seems to be a popular one today. It is a nice cover. I just like the look of the boat in The Nightmare Charade.

I didn’t even pay much attention to the crossed swords on The Neverland Wars, but a blue cover is never going to jump out at as much as a red one 😛 It’s weird though how some silhouettes are just more appealing than others lol.

I see quite a lot of cover with silhouettes lately. I kinda like them as it leaves the features of the main character a bit of a mystery while still including them on the cover. I really like the covers for SJ Pajonas her daydreamer detective series and how they feature the silhouette of the main character.

From the ones you listed here I think the Undertow series is my favourite. They feel a bit whimsical indeed and I like how they used the reflection and the title in the middle. Crowmoon looks interesting too with the watercolour effect and the bird in front of her. I always liked the cover for The Night Circus, although I never hd the urge to pick up the book. Have you read the book?

    1. Kristen Burns

That’s a good point, I never thought about how silhouettes are a good way to show the main character while still letting the reader form their own images for the details. And the SJ Pajonas covers are nice ones.

Undertow and Crow Moon do seem to be the favorites! And Crow Moon is like a two-for-one since it also has that bird silhouette you mentioned 😛 I haven’t read The Night Circus yet, but I plan to before the year is over 🙂

Very cool! I love those Undertow ones. Though I’ve never heard of the books, but I like how the cover plays with the reflections. I’ve always liked silhouette covers. They’re usually very artistic with a minimalist vibe.

    1. Kristen Burns

So far almost everyone has loved the Undertow covers! You’re right though, silhouettes are very artistic and minimalistic, which is exactly what I like!

  7. S. J. Pajonas

Nice collection of covers here! I’ll admit that I really like the silhouettes on covers. They give a level of mystery that otherwise you don’t get with a real person. I especially love that Crow Moon cover that incorporates another image into the silhouette! Very pretty.

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! Silhouettes do make great covers. You’re right, they do leave a bit of mystery and leave more to the reader’s imagination. And I love that Crow Moon cover too!
