Review:
This was a great start to an urban fantasy series I’m excited to continue! This book had a little bit of everything in the best way. Good writing, a flawed but lovable main character, a nice cast of supporting characters, a romance that I could get behind with a sweet and sexy shifter, a couple steamy sex scenes, action-packed battles, a world with magic and gods and other supernaturals, and a solid plot about a string of demon-related murders and some power-hungry baddies.
I will admit I was confused about a lot of things (the gods stuff, the different government and military agencies, the way the packs and god packs worked, some case-related details), but it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book. I think it’s cool the author put so much thought into the world, and it turns out there’s a helpful index in the back, I just didn’t realize it was there until I finished.
Another great thing was just Patrick’s character. He’s a war vet, and the author really kept his military background in mind. He had habits left over from his military days. He had thoughts and reactions that were different than someone without that background. He had emotional trauma and scars from both the war and his childhood. He was flawed and a bit harsh sometimes, he didn’t always handle his emotions in healthy ways, and he felt guilty about things, but ultimately he was a good person.
Jono was great too, in a way that just made me happy Patrick ended up with him in his life. Jono is compassionate and protective of those he cares about.
Overall, I enjoyed this magic and supernatural-filled M/M urban fantasy, and I’m looking forward to seeing what else will happen to Patrick and Jono!

This does sound good, and from your description there are lots of cool elements that I love😁
It was! Lots of elements I love too 🙂
I usually get confused with the world building stuff too. I try to just roll with it and hope it makes sense later on lol

Same lol. And I find that it usually does make sense in the end in most books. At least, even if I don’t understand all the details of everything that happened, I understand the overall story, and it doesn’t affect my enjoyment.
Patrick sounds like such an interesting and complex character. I already want to know more about him.
He is! I really liked him as a character.
I love when an author puts so much thought into making his world feel complex and real. It makes the first book of a series that much better than those who figure it out as they write. YAY! I’ll go tbr this one right now. ❤️
I do love when authors really put thought into the world to make it feel cohesive and whole!
A government agent (and a damaged one to boot) and a werewolf- being hunted by merc mages? Sounds fun! I’m always down for werewolves!
What a concise but perfect summary, haha. Werewolves aren’t always my fave, but this series has got a nice pack thing going on, and Jono has an interesting element to his werewolfness!
Can you imagine if we could get jobs as novel summarizers? Perfect or what lol.
I think that’s just a synopsis/blurb writer 😂 I already do two-sentence summaries at the beginning of all my book review posts, if only I could get paid for that…
This sounds great, I love when pnr has adult characters who have already lived and have a solid backstory.
I really liked it! And I love that too!
I love when the writers puts thought into developing the world, and it’s cool to hear there’s an index in the back. Those are so helpful for refreshing myself on details!
I’ve been able to enjoy books in the past even if I was confused on a few details. It mostly becomes a problem when I’m stretched too far on disbelief or when the confusion hampers my understanding/enjoyment of the overall plot.
I think if I had known about the index ahead of time, I would’ve been less confused lol. But I still appreciate thought-out world building! And tbh I seem to get confused about details in a lot of books, but it doesn’t affect my enjoyment either if I can still understand the gist.
This sounds like an interesting read and one I would probably quite enjoy. Sure, there were some questions and confusion but if it didn’t affect your enjoyment overall then I’ll mark this as one to read.
I do get confused easily, so that might not even affect you lol. I hope you like it if you give it a try!
Sounds like a solid start of a new series. It sounds nice how it has a bit of everything. Too bad about a lot of things being confusing, but that’s good it didn’t affect your enjoyment of the book. It does seem like the world is very thought out, I always like that in books. That sounds well done how his military background is part of his personality. Great review!
It really was! Being a bit confused usually doesn’t bother me. Thanks!
Wow, it certainly sounds like this book has a little bit of everything… some heated scenes, great main characters and secondary characters, action scenes and a solid plot! I am impressed that you could still enjoy it even though sometimes it got to be a bit confusing. I have to admit that if I am confused my enjoyment of reading is impacted a bit :/
I get confused easily when plots get complicated lol. I’ve learned to just roll with it. It doesn’t really bother me as long as I can still understand the gist of the plot.
