Review:
*I received an ecopy of this book via NetGalley. This has not influenced my review.*
This was pretty much your typical urban fantasy. The plot was action packed with a bit of mystery. The main character was kind of snarky and rough around the edges but not really a bad person. The MC had a crew of all different supernaturals, including a zombie, a yeti, and a banshee (well, kind of—she was actually his lawyer). The writing style was conversational, like the MC was talking to you sometimes. The dialogue was mostly joke-y and banter-y, even when the characters were in serious situations. The MC’s thoughts were usually joke-y too. So I think whether or not you like this book is really going to depend on what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for typical urban fantasy fun with a well-paced plot and lots of banter between character, this will deliver. If you’re looking for something that stands out in the genre, like I was, this might disappoint—or maybe not, it really just depends on your taste. It wasn’t bad; it simply wasn’t what I was looking for.
The idea of the MC being able to create boxes out of the “dim” (the space between dimensions) was neat though, something I’d never read about. There was also a pretty good, twisty mystery, though I’m not sure I quite understood the whole explanation. And there was a nice dynamic among the friends at times.
So overall, while it wasn’t quite what I was looking for, this book was a light, easy urban fantasy read that others might enjoy.

Anyone who likes typical urban fantasy with action, banter, snarky main characters, and lots of supernatural creatures.
I adore snarky characters so this sounds like one I will eventually pick up. I also really like the idea of a yeti in an urban fantasy book for some reason. Great thoughts.
Then you might like this one 🙂
This sounds pretty interesting to me but it’s been a long time since I’ve read UF. Like so many genres, I got bored and took a break 🙂
For What It’s Worth
Yeah, I’ve been avoiding the typical kind of UF as well, but this one seemed like it might stand out. Unfortunately it didn’t :-/
First books in UF hardly every rate well with me, I do like the snark and banter..reminds me of White Trash Zombie. I admit I am curious.
I haven’t read White Trash Zombie yet, so I can’t compare. Maybe you’ll like this more than I did if you read it 🙂
I am sorry it did not work for you. It does sounds interesting and my curiosity has been peaked,
Thanks, maybe you’ll like it more than I did 🙂
I actually enjoy snarkiness and witty banter. Sorry it wasn’t what you were looking for.
I like banter too, but I guess it annoys me when characters are joking even in serious situations.
I like that kind of banter and joking dialogue, so maybe it would be for me.
I do too, but I guess it bothers me when they can’t even be serious in serious situations. But maybe you’d like it more!
I like the sound of the plot this book has, though I’m not sure about constant banter/conversation. Hmmm. I’m going to put this on my maybe list, for when I feel like something light hearted in the genre 🙂
Yeah I think the banter was just a little too much for me, but if you’re looking for quick and light, then this is probably good 🙂
It does sound like this one is quite a lot of fun inbetween the mayhem. Thank you for the review.
It’s good for a quick, fun read 🙂
This book sounds like it could really go either way on the enjoyment scale for me. On the one hand, cool urban fantasy idea with banter and snarky characters. On the other, the writing style could totally not work for me and also it doesn’t stand out too much even with an original concept. I do think the ability to create stuff out of nothing (or out of the space between dimensions) is cool, I can think of a whole bunch of things I’d like to be able to pluck out of thin air.
Yeah, it was a cool idea, but I’ve just read so much UF that it has started to feel all the same, and so I really like UF books that stand out. And this one just didn’t for me. But it might for other people. Hmmm, yeah, I mean you can’t pluck food out of the dim or something, but you probably could make some cool stuff!
This really doesn’t sound like something I would enjoy. I like the idea of the box, but not a group who uses the box for hire. Thanks for sharing your honest opinion!
Understandable. Not every book is for every person!
hummm even though I do like snarky characters, and lots of action and supernatural creatures, I think I need your next giggling with excitement 5-star review to start reading urban fantasy again! 😉
Yeah, maybe don’t read this one if you’re looking for something to blow you away. But man, if only I could find one of those books that I could give a raving 5 star review to lol.
On the subject of banter…I think it depends on how it is presented. If it is non stop bitchy bickering it can get really boring and I tend to switch off. If they are a close knit team who exchange funny comments it can be quite funny. I’ve tried this author twice but his work doesn’t appeal to me personally as I hate the foul mouthed characters!
I agree, sometimes banter is good, sometimes not so much. And in this case it just didn’t work for me. I guess I didn’t even notice how foul-mouthed they were lol.
What a great premise. Too bad it was wasted. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. 🙂
I just responded to your comment about dystopian sounding the same, but for me, urban fantasy is what has all started to sound the same. And this was one of those books that just didn’t stand out.
