Review:
*I received a free ecopy of this graphic novel via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*
This volume only ended up being about 90 pages long with the other 40 or so pages being extras. And while I don’t want to hold the length against it (and even though some of the extras, like No Shave November, were kind of awesome), it didn’t leave time for much to happen (this volume was mostly insight into Elly’s situation and the terrible jobs she’s had in the past), and it made it hard for me to connect to the characters because I didn’t get to know them enough.
That being said, I liked what I saw of the characters so far. Elly’s situation, being a post-college twenty-something struggling to find a good job, is something I can relate to, and her indecision/freak out when she was in the car on the way to the new job spoke to me on a spiritual level. Anyone who is indecisive will feel that pain!
But while I related to Elly because of her situation, I related to Serge because of his personality. He was just kind of sarcastic and exasperated with the ridiculous things he had to put up with. He also seemed kind of dorky in that lovable way. And his facial expressions were the best.
Overall it had nice artwork and was a quirky, entertaining read. Though I didn’t get to connect much with the characters this time, I can see myself getting more into the series as it continues.

I'm not sure yet, I need to read some more of the series before really knowing who to recommend it to. So far, I'd say graphic novel readers who like quirky humor.
Thanks. i am always so happy to read graphic novel reviews. I would wait and see your reaction on the books that follow
Thanks, I’ve started trying more graphic novels this year since I hadn’t really read them before. I plan to continue with the series, so I should have some more reviews in the future 🙂
I do like quirky humour, and Elly and Serge sound interesting… When there’s more volumes out… I might be tempted to give it a go! Even though I’m a graphic novel noob, I’m hoping to start Saga soon!
You should definitely read Saga! I started it near the end up last year, and it was my first graphic novel. This year I’ve been giving some other series a try. I find they’re perfect for when I’m having trouble focusing and can’t really get into “normal” books because graphic novels are faster and easier and have pretty pictures lol. But I would like to continue this series, so I should have some more reviews for you to read whenever the next volumes come out 🙂
I hope you’ll get more into the series as it continues. It sounds like a good start, although it’s a shame it’s a bit too short. The plot sounds interesting though and I can definitely relate to struggling to get a good job after graduating. I wish more books would deal with that situation. I am glad to hear the artwork was done well too, that’s always one of the things I look for in a graphic novel.
Thanks 🙂 It was a shame though. It felt more like a prequel—I wanted to see the actual story start! But yeah, there aren’t a lot of books that deal with that topic or that even have that age characters, so that was nice. And the artwork can definitely make or break enjoyment of a graphic novel.
I like quirky humor, but too bad you didn’t get a chance to really connect with the characters. :/
Yeah, but I’m crossing my fingers that they’ll put the rest of the volumes on Netgalley too so that I can keep reading and maybe get a chance to connect with the characters soon 🙂
