Book Review: Dead End (Duncan Andrews Thrillers Book 4) by Stephen Osborne

When Robbie's cousin calls Duncan with a ghost problem, Duncan takes the case, figuring it'll be another simple spirit banishment---until the serial killer ghost nearly kills Duncan and nearly drains Robbie of all his energy. Meanwhile, Duncan finds out some unsettling news about his best friend Gina's new boyfriend that could put her in danger, and he still hasn't given up on trying to fix his relationship problems with Robbie.

Review:

*I received a free ecopy of this book from the publisher. This has not influenced my review.*

I feel like my reviews for this series are getting repetitive, but what can I say? The books in this series are consistently good and always deliver on exactly what you’re expecting from them. The characters are always likeable, the plots are always good with a bit of action and detective work, the writing is always easy to read, and there’s always a bit of snarky humor and supernatural fun.

I especially liked the sweet things about the relationship this time though, *SPOILER ALERT FOR PREVIOUS BOOKS (although it’s not really a spoiler if you’ve read the blurb for this book)* like the times when Duncan would think yeah, maybe it sucked that he and Robbie couldn’t have sex and could hardly even kiss, but just having the person he loved there with him was enough. *END SPOILER ALERT* Those parts were touching. It was obvious how much they loved each other.

I had a couple issues though. For one thing, I felt misled (or rather that I was meant to be misled, since I guessed correctly anyway) in an unfair way by the author about certain things. I can understand misleading the reader for certain purposes, but the way it was done didn’t really make sense. I also felt this book was rather predictable. That being said, these things didn’t detract from the likeable characters, humor, etc. that I mentioned above, and the ending did manage to surprise me in a great way!

So overall, this was another great addition to the series that had more sweetness and touching-ness than the others and of course all the snarkiness and supernatural fun I’ve come to expect from Duncan and his crew!

“I feel like my reviews for this series are getting repetitive” —I totally understand how you feel. Sometimes if a series is consistently good, I always gush about it. 🙂

Sounds like an interesting read. A serial killer ghost? that’s different! Great review. ~Aleen

Yeah, it just happens sometimes with series when the books all do the same things well! Especially since I wrote all the reviews for this series one right after the other.

It’s been a light, fun series so far (despite the serial killer ghost lol)! Thanks 🙂

Personally, I think snarky humour is a must for urban fantasy/paranormal titles! It just feels like a story’s missing something without that kind of banter, so it’s good to hear that this series delivers on that front. A predictable plot can be a bit of a bummer, but good characters can salvage it! 🙂

Haha It does get hard reviewing a series – or an author – over and over again, particularly if they’re good. 🙂 But I’m happy you continue to enjoy the series and that the author keeps you engaged with the characters as well as what’s going on with them…the mystery. The intentional misleading thing and the predictability – well, I’m glad neither took away too much from the story overall and I do get your irritation with the misleading. If authors are going to use that ploy, it needs to be done well and make sense with the story. :/ Anyway, I look forward to seeing your thoughts about Duncan and Robbie in the next installment. 😉

Well I suppose we wouldn’t be reading a whole bunch of books in a series if it weren’t good, haha. Yeah, the misleading thing was annoying because it was done in a weird, unfair kinda way, but it was brief and didn’t really affect anything. Thanks!
