Book Review: Romeo and/or Juliet: A Chooseable-Path Adventure by Ryan North

What if Romeo and Juliet did things a little differently and things didn't end up the way they did? With this book, you get to choose their actions for them and find out how things might've gone, with paths that vary from never meeting to becoming time traveling ghosts, and everything in between.

Review:

I don’t know how much of this I actually read since there are so many paths and endings, but I feel like I’ve read enough to review it. And I gotta say:

This book is a lot of fun! It’s ridiculous and silly, and it definitely made me laugh. It made me laugh right at the start, in fact, *SPOILER (sorta spoils the joke, though you might miss the joke if you’re actually paying attention—yes, I said that right)* when it called me out for not following instructions. I flipped to the next page instead of clicking the link (I was reading the ebook), which was incorrect since it’s a chooseable path book. I was momentarily distracted and skimming, which it also called me out for later—this author’s a damn mind reader! But I discovered that if you just keep flipping to the next page, ignoring the instructions, it gets even funnier. *END SPOILER* And that basically summarizes what the whole book is like. Humorous plot and writing, lots of meta jokes, a very casual tone, and a fun way of not just telling a story but also interacting with the reader. This author clearly had a style and goal in mind when he wrote this, and he fully succeeded.

Aside from the humor… There are so many choices and paths and endings in this book, covering many genres, from tragedy to romance to noir detective mystery to sci-fi/fantasy with Romeo and Juliet as time traveling ghosts.

There’s also a little artwork for each ending! I loved seeing all the different art.

Overall just a super fun and funny book that puts a really great twist (or rather, many twists) on a well-known classic!

I used to love choose your adventure books. I may have to give this one a try. My boyfriend had written one once. It was ok.
