Review:

My review of Book 1 is basically a series review, so instead of repeating everything, I’m going to focus more on the things I liked about this particular book.

This used to be my least favorite in the series, but upon rereading the books a couple times, I cannot fathom why. I think it was because of all the wolf shifters, but I might actually be a shifter fan if they were all as lovable as these. I feel like I appreciate the later books in the series more and more every time I read them. The development of the characters, the progression of the relationships between them, the intricacy of the overarching plot, the ever-changing emotions…

The other books may have had more heart-wrenching relationship struggles and laugh-out-loud humor, but this one had more intense moments, scenes when there was so much going on and so many things that could go wrong and so much at risk, like during the heist and during that whole big climax at the end.

Then there were the characters themselves (always the best part). Neil really wormed his way into my heart in this one (with all my rereads, I’ve realized he was actually super great and sweet even in the first two books, and I don’t know why I didn’t love him more before), and I felt for him and how lost he was. There are also a lot of new characters introduced in this one, most notably, Zack, Lee, and Declan. But they all have just as much depth and personality as the others and are their own unique people. Zoey did frustrate me at times, like with how she didn’t listen to what anyone told her about the important ceremony, but Daniel and Dev continued to grow.

Not only that, the way all the characters—Zoey, Daniel, Dev, Zack, Niel, Sarah, even Felix—worked together at the end, helping each other and protecting each other, was just beautiful. And ok, Zoey may have frustrated me at times, but that scene near the end when she was marching forward with her gun—could she get any more badass than she was in that moment?! I loved it.

I will say though that this book had A LOT of sex, seemingly more than in the others, or at least that’s how it seemed the first time I read it. Maybe I’ve just become accustomed to all the sex, or maybe it’s that I know the characters better, but I wasn’t as bothered by it and noticed a lot more depth the second and third times around. I was also thrown off by the ending of Book 2 since it didn’t seem like something Daniel would agree to, but, believable or not, I came to love it. And damn it if *SPOILER* the relationship between Daniel and Dev isn’t pretty much the greatest ever. I mean, I ADORE the love between Daniel and Zoey, but I like this in a different way. And this is the book when it starts hinting at more and becoming deliciously tension-filled. And I can’t believe I missed Bris’s almost slip-up in the bathtub the first time! *END SPOILER*

So if you can roll with the twists and the romance-y stuff, this book is another fantastic one in the series. There’s lots of wolf shifters, Daniel letting his vampire freak flag fly, Dev’s ass of a brother whom you won’t be able to help but feel for, fighting off animated corpses, Marcus’s persuasion powers, and epic battles to look forward to!

*I’ve read this book multiple times. This review was written after my 3rd read.*

I sometimes find with rereads you come to appreciate parts of a book you never did the first time around. This is especially true of series. I think I sometimes get so sucked up in the goings on of certain characters that I become indifferent to other parts of the story, It’s only when I know what’s going on reading it a second time around I even notice other characters… but that might be me. This isn’t a series I’d heard of but reading this I’m thinking maybe I need to check it out, it sounds interesting.

I agree, it’s interesting how that happens. The first time we do get focused on certain things because there’s so much to take in, but the second or third or whatever time, we can focus on and notice different things. Just one of the reasons rereading is great! You might not remember, but you’ve heard of the series because I talk about this one all the time lol 😛 I definitely think you should check it out!

Isn’t it funny how views of certain books shift over time? Glad to hear this one got better in your estimation! And I kinda do like werewolves even if I don’t read about ’em much…

    1. Kristen Burns

It is interesting how that happens. And I think with rereads, you can also notice different things than on the first read. Thanks! I’m getting more into the idea of werewolves and shifters, I guess it just depends on how they’re written.

There are only a couple of books I would re-read, but your comments about your past and present views is really interesting and I am part curious how my views would change, but also honestly, I’d need more hours int he day to be able to re-read some titles!

    1. Kristen Burns

Oh you should really try rereading one day! I didn’t used to see the point, but then I tried and realized it’s great with the right books. You notice all sorts of things you didn’t notice the first time.

It’s been ageeees since I read an adult paranormal series! I love it when you seem to love the books more and more as the series goes on, and when it doesn’t feel draggy at all. <3 Glad your re-read made you fall in love with this book more!

I admit to skimming a bit since I haven’t read this installment yet but I’m happy to see you enjoyed it and that it improved upon re-reading. I love Neil already so him working his way into your heart in this book means I might end up loving him even more. 🙂 Anyway, I thank you again for introducing me to this series. I’m eager to continue it to see what happens next!

    1. Kristen Burns

Understandable. But aww, then yes, you’ll definitely end up loving Neil even more, I think. I just somehow finally connected with him more in this one, I guess. I’m eager for you to continue too!

  6. Daniela Ark

This is one of your favorite series I think. All the reviews I remember reading are good! In fact it is on my TBR because of that! I want to read it so badly because you are so enthusiastic about it though I’m not sure what to do about the animated corpses since I have been allergic to them since I was born 🙂
I don’t know why I’m staying away from steamy reads lately either. I guess another of those seasonal allergies I get like the vampires one. Though that one lasted a couple f years! LOL But As soon as I’m not allergic to “A LOT of sex” I will give it a try! 🙂

    1. Kristen Burns

Yes, this is the one! Honestly, I have no clue if you’re gonna like this or not lol. I can see it going either way since it’s got the vampires and the alpha males and the steamy scenes. Well, I guess we’ll see if your seasonal genre allergies ever go away and you decide to give it a go!
