Book Review: The Blood Curse (Spell Weaver Book 3) by Annette Marie

Clio and Lyre still don't have the KLOC spell, and they don't know what Bastion is planning to do with it, but they do know they have to stop him before he starts a war. But Bastion isn't the only enemy trying to kill them, and Lyre isn't sure it's even possible to defeat his father.

Review:

*I received an ecopy of this book from the author. This has not influenced my review.*

This was the final book in the Spell Weaver trilogy (which is kind of a prequel to the Steel & Stone series, at least for me since I read Steel & Stone first), and it was just as amazing, action-packed, fast-paced, and gripping as all the other books. I had planned to read it over the course of several days, but I ended up reading it in two because I didn’t want to put it down.

One of the things I liked most about this book, surprisingly, was getting to see more of Miysis. In Steel & Stone, he was this “never quite a friend, but never quite an enemy” character to the trio. I was never really sure what he was thinking or what he might do. He was interesting; in this book, maybe even more so. As Lyre said, he was manipulative, but not a bad person. *MILD SPOILER (it happens within the first 34% and doesn’t actually spoil anything, but just in case)* And he and Lyre were buddies! I wasn’t expecting that friendship, but I liked it. And Miysis possibly checking Lyre out? I don’t care that it’s not actually a thing, I want some Lysis fanart of the two of them in the Ra garments and body paint 😛 *END SPOILER*

Then there was Ash, and seeing the formation of Lyre and Ash’s friendship, seeing the two of them actually starting to trust each other, was adorable. I mean, Ash fell asleep with his head on Lyre’s shoulder. How cute is that? It’s easy to forget how young Ash actually is in this series and that, underneath the scary assassin he’s forced to be, he’s not all that different from anyone else.

As for all the rest… Lyre, Clio, and Ash were all badass, as usual, and I felt for all of them, especially Lyre. The characters actually did get a bit of a reprieve with some down time to enjoy themselves, but aside from that it was pretty much one terrible situation after another (which kept me gripped). The battle/fight scenes were all incredibly well-written (these books have possibly the best ones I’ve ever read, what with all the magic being flung around and everything, interesting magic that Annette Marie describes in amazing ways). Lyceus was more powerful and terrible than I had even imagined. There was romance, and although it got more serious, I feel like it took a bit of a backseat in terms of focus this time and was well-balanced with the other plotlines. There was also a bit of humor amongst all the chaos (I just about died at Ash’s reaction to something Clio said near the end). Overall, it was a great ending to the Spell Weaver trilogy, and I’m already anticipating the series coming out about these lovable characters that will take place after Steel & Stone!

I haven’t read book one or two of this series, but it does look really interesting! I’m glad you enjoyed this because it seems like you’re pretty invested in this series and it’s always a shame when later books are a let down.

You should definitely check out this series (or Steel & Stone, which is connected to this one) if you like urban fantasy! Thanks, I agree it’s a letdown when series go downhill, but luckily that’s not the case for this one!

  2. Greg

Sounds like great characters in this one! And I love it when a conclusion sticks the landing, so to speak! Glad this was good, and the humor (and awesome battle scenes/ magic stuff) sounds great too.

  3. Tori @ InToriLex

I haven’t read this series but glad your still enjoying it. I have had bad experiences where I tend to not finish series because I fear they will turn out bad in later books. Awesome Review!

The best battle and fight scenes you’ve ever read? Now I’m intrigued! It’s also fun when a villain ends up being more ruthless than you imagined–keeps you on your toes! Glad you enjoyed this series so much! And I’m glad you didn’t die from the humor. 😉

The magic is so cool, and the way she writes the fight scenes is just amazing! And yep, those bad villains do keep you on your toes! Lol aww, you’re so sweet for being glad I didn’t die 😛 What he said was just so hilarious and so perfect for his character.

I’m a big fan of incubi and succubi stories but I’m not much into stories with LOTSA of magic or NA . For some reason I’m not crazy about NA. Though “lots of” something is always a subjective term so I may very well find that it is just the right amount of magic for me and love it 🙂 especially if it is fast-paced, gripping and action-packed,

    1. Kristen Burns

How can you be a fan of incubi/succubi but not magic??? You confuse me lol. I don’t really know what NA is to be honest and have never been able to get a clear cut answer. I just put it cuz the characters are in their 20s lol. But yes, who knows, maybe you’d like the magic in this one!

      1. Daniela Ark

haha well succubi/incubi are NOT magical creatures! They are demons! And angels and demons just DO stuff, [winks] succubi/incubi seducing you with only the power of their charm 😉 I totally agree about NA. there is not really a description for that other than “we’ll include LOTSA sex scene in this book” LOL

        1. Kristen Burns

But they are! In the mythology, don’t they manipulate people’s dreams in order to have sex with people while they’re sleeping? And in most books, they’re just portrayed as creatures with sex magic or that feed from sex and thus need it to survive. See? Magic!

Oh, well, “LOTSA sex” isn’t my definition of NA. This book doesn’t even have any explicit sex scene, just a brief build-up to one and then the sex is off-page.

I am happy you could love the end to this series just as much as the previous ones in the series! It sounds like it was all more of the good stuff that you liked in the previous books. When trilogies can be consistent in their goodness like this it makes my heart so happy 😀

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks 🙂 It was definitely a great continuation/ending! Although not entirely an ending since it picks back up in another upcoming series, which I’m looking forward to!

Sheesh we’ve chatted about this so much I didn’t realise I hadn’t stopped by this post!!!!!!!!! Sorry!

Ha ha, there’s the Ash falling asleep on Lyre thing!!! And the fanart request! And the fact that Ash is so young. We were like twinsies on reading this one!! 😀

AWESOME review and I wholeheartedly agree with all the things. I’ll picking up Chase the Dark soooooooon!!!!!!! Maybe next week if I can!

I haven’t read this series and sadly it’s not on Overdrive. I have been reading the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. Right now I’m the last book which makes me sad and relieved. Roland becomes friends with three other people. Jake calls him his father in the last book. Jake also makes a raccoon-like creature a friend which I think is sweet.
