Review:
*I received an ecopy of this book from the publisher. This has not influenced my review.*
This is the third Megan Derr book I’ve read, and I’m starting to think I can’t go wrong with her. And like the others I’ve read, it was fluffy, but it was so much more than just fluff. It didn’t slack on the plot or the characters or the writing, but it still just made me smile and laugh and feel happy.
This book was just so damn funny. And the characters were all so likeable. I thought Lesto and Rene especially would be jerks since they were close to the king and the brothers of the king’s late consort (and because that’s just how things seem to go in these royal court books), but nope. They were awesome, and I loved them, and I loved everyone. I even got a little bit emotional at times, not because I felt sad, but because I liked the characters so much and they were all trying so hard and doing their best; I felt for them when they were feeling upset or worried or guilty, as well as when they were touched or excited or happy. I don’t even normally like series with different main characters in each book, but, with this one, I’m glad the other books are about different characters because I really do want all their stories! I’m pretty sure I’d read a book about any character in this series. Literally I would even read a book about Myra, and I’m pretty sure he had like two whole sentences. (Ok I wrote that as a joke because I didn’t think there would actually be a book about him, but I just checked, and it turns out the fourth book is going to about him. Now I’m excited because I really do want to read a book about him, haha. Though I must say, I’m disappointed there’s no book about *SPOILER* Rene and Tara *END SPOILER* [yet?] because they were probably my favorite characters in this book!)
I also loved the use of the dual perspectives (Allen’s and Sarrica’s) to show the misunderstandings between characters, like how Allen thought Sarrica must be thinking XYZ of him, but Sarrica was actually acting a certain way because of ABC. I like when books do that because, in real life, we really don’t know what people are thinking/feeling or what their reasons or motivations for things are, and so we probably do misinterpret plenty. But I never felt like it went too far into the miscommunication. It was believable. And the romance itself was ultimately sweet and a bit of a slow burn, though not a particularly tension-filled one.
So overall, I loved the characters, I loved the relationships among them, I loved the humor, and I definitely enjoyed this book!

This sounds lovely, Kristen – I LOVE the cover, too:) Thank you for a great review.
It was a really sweet read! And yes, the covers for all the books in this series are gorgeous!
This sounds interesting and I love when you find an author who delivers. I thought this was YA at first, but the M/M theme has me thinking no.
It’s great finding authors whose books you can always look forward to! Nope, not YA. So far all of her books I’ve read have had explicit sex scenes and adult characters.
I downloaded another book by her that you rec’d. Even though I don’t love fantasy I do love humor so I’ll keep this one in mind too.
For What It’s Worth
This one was a lot of fun 🙂 But is it high fantasy you don’t like, or paranormal? (Or both? Lol.) Because this one was set in a fantasy world but didn’t have anything paranormal in it.
For a long time I think I was the only who’d read this. I enjoyed it too. I’m hoping you read book two, because I’d love to get your perspective.
I’m glad you enjoyed it too! I’ve already finished the next two books lol. I didn’t think the second was quite as good, but it was still cute at least.
A fluffy book ever now and then would be great since I mostly read serious High fantasy 😛 I really like the colors in the cover for some reason 🙂 Also humor in any genre makes it bettr! Great review Kristen 😀
Yeah, I normally prefer dark, but sometimes fluffy is just what you need! I love the colors too, and just the whole cover! And no worries, I deleted the duplicate comment 🙂
This review gives me the warm fuzzies, the book sounds adorable and how cool is the cover?!
Haha, it was such a cute book, and I love the cover too!
This one sounds good with the bit of political and court life going and on and I like how you say it’s a bit fluffy, but also so much more. And it’s great when the characters are likeable and you even feel emotional when someone gets upset. And it seem the dual perspective really worked here so you can see their different thoughts and why misunderstandings occur. It can really give you a deeper understanding to characters.
I am not a big fan of miscommunication as often it feels so unrealistic, like how the never get to explain themselves for some plot reason, so that sounds nice the miscommunication here is believable.
It’s great when a book is so good and the character all interesting that you want their stories as well. One of the last series where I had this was Siobhan Davis Kennedy Boys series and luckily she is going to write all their stories. It feels like each character is so real there and has their own story and problems and I want to read about them all.
It was! Megan Derr is good at writing books that are light and fluffy with the romance tropes people expect but still making the books good.
Yeah, I know you don’t like miscommunication. I don’t mind it too much usually, but it seems like in all Megan Derr books, there’s miscommunication, but eventually the characters talk it out, oftentimes sooner rather than later.
It’s great when every character is so well-written!
This book sounds pretty damn good. I would never have heard of it but you always seem to find the best indie books. I am adding this my TBR list and if I see a good sale on this I will totally snap it up. I love misunderstandings between two characters and then getting to see both sides to see why it happened. It makes it fun. Sometimes you just need reads like this one.
You might like this one. It’s super cute, especially if you like those kinda misunderstandings.
Fluffy stories with depth are my catnip! Add in an interesting world of court politics, a sweet romance without too much miscommunication, and lovable characters, and I’m sold. Well done dual-POVs is just a bonus!
Haha, then you might really like this one!
