Review:
I enjoyed this book but don’t have a ton to say about it, so I’ll make this short and sweet.
The ownvoices Native American rep was really cool! This book was so immersed in Navajo/Diné culture and mythology. Everything from the language to the setting to the supernatural powers to the beings of legend, like the trickster Coyote. It’s not a culture I know much about, but I enjoyed getting to read about it.
The protagonist was one I felt for. She felt like she was just a killer and a monster and nothing more, but she still wanted people to see more in her, even though she pushed them away. She had a tough outer shell, but her heart was in the right place, and I really did feel bad for her every time she revealed to the reader just how much she was hurting.
There was also monster fighting in a post-apocalyptic setting and a bit of romance. I was expecting the book to be more fun for some reason, but it actually had quite a serious tone, what with Maggie’s brutal past and her reclusive nature.
I can’t say the book left a huge impression on me, but I think it was just one of those “it’s me, not the book” things. If this sound good to you, I say give it a try!

Anyone who likes monster slaying, Native American mythology and culture, and female MCs who are kickass with hard outer shells but good hearts.
I recently read this one myself and really enjoyed the setting, culture and mythology. I loved Maggie too, I just wish I had of read it at a different time. I was visiting family so read it in little broken up spurts and so I didn’t get the most out of it.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! But yeah, things going on in our life at the time can definitely be a distraction and affects our reading experience :-/
I really loved this and I’m frustrated that I haven’t had time to read the sequel yet😁
I hope you love the sequel just as much whenever you get the chance to read it!
I always struggle with “it’s me, not you” books because I never know what to say in the review. I’m heard a lot of buzz around this one. Will you read the sequel?
It is hard to figure out how to rate and review those. No, I think this just isn’t a series for me, though I wouldn’t try to turn other people away from reading it.
This is at the top of my TBR! I especially can’t wait to read it because the main character’s name is Maggie, lol. It’s interesting that you say it has a more serious tone, because I feel like all I’ve heard about is how funny and quip-y it is. That’s helpful to know going in.
Lol that seems fun to read about an MC with your name. I hope you end up enjoying it!
Thanks for sharing this author and series. It sounds perfect for me. I will be telling my sister about it too!
I hope you both like it!
Ooh you read this one! I still haven’t gotten to it yet, but it looks fabulous. Although something’s been holding me back… it’s not like demanding I read it, you know? But I still might… I do like the monster slaying angle, and the post apoc feel.
I did! You should give it a try if you’re interested. The post apoc setting was kinda cool.
This sounds really good. I love that it has Native American mythology in it and I’m always up for a book that features kickass female characters. 🙂
The mythology and culture was really cool! And kickass women are always great 🙂
The native American rep sounds interesting. It sounds very well done too, with how you got a feel for the culture thanks to this book. I haven’t read many books with native Americans. I read one earlier this year which might count as one of the main character was native American and he also had these cool dream walk powers.
The main character of this book sounds interesting to read about with her hard outer shell, but her heart on the right place. That’s too bad it had a more serious tone when you were expecting fun. Great review!
I like when books are really immersed in a culture. That book sounds cool 🙂
I did feel for this MC, although I just had my expectations a bit off! Thanks!
I’ve been thinking about this one for a bit, but something hasn’t made me get to it yet. Seems like a good read though
We all just have so many books, it’s hard to get to them all! I hope you like it if you give it a try 🙂
I remember seeing a lot of hype around this one and couldn’t justify buying it but now you’re like ‘it’s ok’ I’m a little put off from buying it. It sounds like a decent read but the fact it left no major impression makes me think I should wait a little while before investing.
Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of great reviews, so maybe it was just me? You could always wait for reviews of future books in the series.
I remember closer to the release date seeing a lot of mostly 3 star reviews like yours. Where they pretty much liked everything, but it wasn’t too memorable or iconic either. So I think it isn’t going to be one for me. But I am glad there was some really good Native American rep in there for the readers to enjoy!
Really? I feel like I’ve only seen rave reviews, so I know some people loved it. Just not quite for me though. But yeah, it’s great to see Native American rep!
