Bookish Tag Post: Bump in the Night Book Tag

I stumbled upon this tag somewhere (I don’t even remember where), and it seemed both fun and perfect for the month of October! I didn’t actually set out to do a bunch of Halloween-themed posts this month, but I follow try to follow my blogging whims, so here we are.

The original can be found at the ColdTeaAndCrumbs booktube channel, and, as usual, I tag everyone who wants to do the tag 🙂

Which are your favorite supernatural/horror/scary characters to read about? (e.g. vampires, werewolves, witches, monsters, serial killers, murderers etc).

If you regularly visit my blog and don’t already know the answer to this question… Lol. In case you really don’t know, I’ll give you a hint: It’s vampires *exaggerated wink* (I’m so good at being subtle, right?!)

Which scene from any book would be your ultimate nightmare to have been part of?

Fractured by Alexandra Moody

Ummm, well in Fractured, the MC was basically experimented on and had needles injected (hidden in case you’re squeamish) into her eyes. That would pretty much be my nightmare, yeah. Or maybe that scene with the zombie-filled lake in Harry Potter. That scene in the book SERIOUSLY freaked me out as a teen.

If you could visit and explore any one scary or evil setting which would you pick and why?

The Nightmare Before Christmas

The real question is, why would I want to visit a scary or evil setting? I don’t even want to read horror, let alone live it. But Halloweentown from The Nightmare Before Christmas would actually be a very cool place to visit (even though it’s not from a book)!

Which book was so frighteningly terrible that you almost fell asleep for eternity trying to finish it?

I never fall asleep during truly terrible books because, when they’re that terrible, I get riled up and aggravated and CAN’T EVEN and just start talking aloud to no one in disbelief at how anyone could write this bad.

Name one book you wish you could pull certain pages out of and swap for others to make it better?

This question is too difficult for me. Next!

If you could turn any ‘bad or evil’ character into a good character, who would you pick and why?

Fine Lines by Bella Roccaforte

I don’t know that I’d turn any bad character good because then they’d be less interesting. Or there wouldn’t be a story. Maybe I should pick the antagonist for one of my favorite characters so that my favorite won’t have to suffer? No, I’ll be selfish and pick my favorite character in Bella Roccaforte’s Deadly Dreams (formerly INK) series. I won’t say his name since it’s spoiler-ish, but he’s not a good person. He’s selfish and manipulative in a very realistic way. And that’s probably why I find him so interesting. But I feel like he had the potential to be good, if only he’d gone down a different path, and maybe I wouldn’t mind seeing him get some redemption or find his way to a better path before the series ends. (I guess I’ll find out soon since the final book is coming out at the end of October!)

Favorite vampire character?

Steal the Light by Lexi Blake

Let’s be honest, probably like half my favorite characters are vampires, but MARCUS! My favorite is Marcus from Lexi Blake’s Thieves series. Of course it doesn’t hurt that he’s sexy, but he’s also really smart and sweet and loyal and seems like the kind of person you could just stay up all night talking to. He also just has this presence and this air of power and confidence that radiates off him, but without him being a jerk.

Favorite werewolf character?

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling

I actually am not a big shifter fan in general, so I don’t read about them much, but it just so happens that one of my favorite characters is coincidentally a werewolf! And that would be Lupin from Harry Potter<3

Favorite witch character?

The Ghost and the Graveyard by Genevieve Jack

It also just so happens that one of my all-time favorite characters is a witch. Admittedly it’s been a while since I read this series, but I do remember that I just absolutely loved the MC, Grateful, from the Knight Games series because of how intelligent and strong-willed she was, how she didn’t wait for things to happen but rather made them happen herself.

Favorite monster character?

iZombie Vol. 1 by Chris Roberson & Michael Allred

Amon Looking Dapper

Technically this is supposed to be favorite monster, but I feel like all these characters are technically monsters, and that’s just too broad of a choice. So I’ve changed it to favorite mummy, mostly just because I want an excuse to talk about Amon from iZombie. He might be a side character, but he is such a dapper dresser like damn, look at those outfits 😉

Favorite ghost character?

How to Date Dead Guys by Ann M. Noser

Jake from How to Date Dead Guys by Ann M. Noser. He started out as such a d*ck, but then he turned out to be really sweet and exactly what Emma needed.

Favorite serial killer/murderer character?

Something Wicked by Carol Oates

What exactly counts as a murderer for this question? Because I feel like half the characters I read about have killed at least one person or paranormal creature. And not always in self-defense or for feeding. The only legit serial killer I’ve ever read about was Henry in Something Wicked by Carol Oates because Henry was Jack the Ripper at one point in his vampire life. I liked him though, so yeah, I’ll go with him.

I like most supernaturals too. I’ve read some fae main characters who were developed and not cold, but as side characters they do tend to seem that way. I guess it depends on the author.

Your nightmare scene would be mine as well. Anything poking there is ewwwwww for me. I freak out putting just using meds there lol (trying to stay spoiler free here since you hid the spoiler)

P.S. I love your little ghosty button 🙂

    For What It’s Worth

I’m not worried about actually spoiling, I just didn’t want to freak people out too much lol. But yeah, absolutely would be a nightmare!

      Thanks 🙂

  2. Let's Get Beyond Tolerance

Oh yes, that scene in Harry Potter is so creepy! I don’t know if I have a set favorite paranormal creature, but vampires would definitely be a top one! And ooh I like your answer about wanting to visit Halloweentown. I’m all in in!

Ooo… I LOVE this Book Tag, Kristen. What fun to share:)). Particularly with Halloween around the corner… Thank you for all your great suggestions!

This is a fun post! I don’t know that I could answer all these questions and I have read some horror. But I think I prefer more paranormal than straight up horror. Halloweentown! YES! That’d be a fun place to visit. 😉 If Marcus is who i remember him to be from Steal the Light, I don’t think I know him well enough to say he’s a favorite but you certainly have me itching to get to know him better. 😉 Because, you know, vamps are my favorite, too! 😉 I have Jack’s and Noser’s books on my shelf…hmm…you not only have a virtual shelf on GR…you’ve also taken up space on my physical shelf! LOL

    1. Kristen Burns

These questions totally work with paranormal books 🙂 No, you don’t know Marcus well yet (he was the one who showed up at the end and talked to Zoey), I didn’t even realize how much I loved him until the fifth book. I told you, I am the alpha shelf 😉 One day we’re gonna have so many books to talk about!

    Cool tag! T’is the season!

Ha ha – Vampires. I would NEVER have known!

Fractured sounds AWFUL! Yeesh! And the dementors in HP are terrifying too….

Ha ha – you’re right, who the heck would want to go to a scary or evil setting! I can’t even think of ONE.

    Lupin! I love Lupin.

I’m not sure who my favourite witch is… Maybe Hermione because I’m boring like that! Or possibly the MC from LJ Smith’s Circle series… But hardly anyone has read that.

I’ve been LOVING Steel and Stone right now, so that Urban Fantasy vibe and all the daemons has me going right now. 🙂

Loved checking out your answers and for a non horror reader I think you had a great range there!

    1. Kristen Burns

Lol exactly! I joined in the Halloween spirit this year.

My fave creature, shocking, right? 😉 The dementors are def frightening too, but that one scene was the one that just really stood out to me! But yay for Lupin love! Ooh I haven’t heard of that series, I will look it up. Don’t worry, hardly anyone has read like 90% of the books I talk about lol. I mean, you’re the only other blogger I’m friends w/ who’s even read S&S now I think!

  6. Karen Blue

Nice choices for this tag. I haven’t read Steal the Light, or any Lexi Blake for that matter, but now I see I NEED to. Thanks for the recs!

  7. Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight

Oooh this is a fun tag! I have to admit, I had no idea there were werewolves in Harry Potter, I am such a fail! Also, I KNEW you were going to say eyes in that one thing- I cringed before I even looked, noooo. I love the “favorite serial killer” question. Like um none, thanks. I would like to visit Panem, I think that counts as scary, right?

    1. Kristen Burns

I didn’t realize you hadn’t read/seen HP! Yeah, there are werewolves, but he’s the only one who’s actually a character in the story. And lol yeah because eyes is like the worst imaginable place, right???! I’d be terrified to visit Panem, so yes, I’d say it counts 😉

  8. Barb (boxermommyreads)

Great tag and I knew vamps would be your favorite. I really enjoy the iZombie graphic novels but you know, I’ve never watched the show. Great answers and I agree, why would we want to turn anyone bad?

  9. Wattle

…I might have to steal this one.

My favourite type of supernatural is vampires set in current times, because I like the idea they could just be roaming around and causing all sorts of trouble lol

    Lupin is the best <3

    1. Kristen Burns

You should totally do this tag!

That’s generally my favorite too, but I’ve never actually thought of it that way. Interesting point!

      I love Lupin <3

  10. Lys @ The Mad Reader

This post made me realize I should read more paranormal books.. I think I’ll pick up How to Date Dead Guys.
It’s going to sound weird but I’m actually curious about what really happens when Dementors are doing their creepy thing haha

    1. Kristen Burns

I always support the decision to read more paranormal books 😉 Oh my goodness, How to Date Dead Guys is AMAZING and so much more touching that it sounds like it would be from the cover—I hope you love it!

Lol I’ve never really thought about that, but now I am too!

  11. Becky @ A Fool's Ingenuity

I totally knew your answer for the first one. The hint wasn’t even necessary. I think the bad to good question is weird because most bad characters I see and love are ones who are awesome because they aren’t good, you know? I realise the series of favourite paranormal characters I need to read (or remember) more paranormal characters because I can’t think of a whole wide variety. I do agree Lupin was one of my favourite werewolf characters, he’s just so nice! And that scene in Harry Potter did freak me out just a touch, it was creepy. I find it less creepy now but only just.

    1. Kristen Burns

Lol yay you know me 😀 And exactly! The bad characters I love are interesting because they’re bad, so I wouldn’t want to change that. Lupin is such a sweetheart though <3 Yes, I'm glad it wasn't just me freaked out by that scene!

  12. Olivia Roach

I am a total vampire lover as well! I think werewolves are actually pretty cool too although it really depends on the presentation of them. The scene you chose as your worst nightmare? That would totally be mine as well. I would hate that to happen to me!

    1. Kristen Burns

Yay vampires 😀 You’re right, I have liked a couple portrayals of werewolves, but idk, they don’t excite me the same way vamps and other creatures do. But it does depend. Ugh, yes, that is def a nightmare-ish scene lol.
