Review:
*I received an ecopy of this book via Edelweiss. This has not influenced my review.*
This was a subdued, slow-paced, high fantasy graphic novel about a princess, her knight, and lots of royal court intrigue. Poppy is the illegitimate daughter of the king, but now he’s dead, her mother is away, her father’s brother has taken the throne, and someone at court is trying to have her killed, but she doesn’t know who.
There were a lot of things to love about this story, like:
– WOC main character
– POC love interest
– characters who looked like real people instead of impossibly perfect (the non-MC princess even had acne, and the Sleepless Knights had bags under their eyes!)
– budding romance between a princess and her knight
– clear artwork
– easy-to-follow plot
– royal court intrigue
– fantasy world
– bit of mystery
– cute little fennec fox(?) pet
Ultimately though, the art style wasn’t right for my taste (which is a very subjective thing), and all the court politics just didn’t interest me enough (again, a subjective thing).
But like I said, there were a lot of great things I liked about this graphic novel. So even though I probably won’t continue the series, I did enjoy this, and I would still recommend this if it sounds like your kind of thing!

Anyone who likes diverse characters, slow-paced stories, and royal court politics.
I haven’t heard of this one but it sounds great! Sarah Vaughn caught my eye too since I liked her work on Alex & Ada. I’m definitely interested enough to take a closer look.
You should try it if you’re interested! I definitely thought there was a lot to like here. I didn’t realize she did Alex & Ada too.
Graphic novels are so new to me but this one looks gorgeous! And royal politics are great for me 🙂
GNs can be a great break from regular novels sometimes! See I’m actually not a huge fan of court politics, but if you are, you might really like this one!
That’s awesome you could see their physical flaws – it’s something that more graphic novels should do since it’s like “watching” a movie in a way. Sorry this ultimately wasn’t for you, but it sounds like a good story!

Yes! I really would like more characters with physical flaws, in comics and regular novels. It was definitely one of those “it’s me, not the book” kinda things, but it was a good story!
Also, that cover is gorgeous. Are you ever planning to check out the Amulet graphic novels? They’re my absolute favorite.
It is a nice cover! I’ll check those out 🙂
I’m surprised that it was easy to follow. I can barely follow court intrigue in a regular novel lol

Same lol.
I’m sorry that the artwork wasn’t for you. But it sounds like this book has a lot of good representation in it. I really like the fact that there are imperfect characters. We need more books with those 🙂
It does have a lot of great rep and is a good book! Like I said, my issues were just personal taste 🙂
Great review! I know in the end you didn’t like the plot (hate court politics too). Did like the idea of being able to see the physical flaws in the art. Graphic novels art can be all over the place, not like manga. ♥️
Yeah, I enjoy court politics *sometimes*, but most of the time it just doesn’t click with me. But I did love the physical flaws! I never thought about that, how manga is similar but GN art completely depends on the artist. It’s good when you find art you love, but not so good when you don’t!
The dude on the cover looks like he’s off to do some derring-do! 😉
I’ve never seen the word derring-do in my life, I had to look that up lol. He is a knight though, so I’d say that he looks like that is a good thing!
Ha, sorry, was I being too British? 😉 My bad.
It’s ok, I learned a new word 😛
