Bookish Musings: How Well Do You Know My Reading Habits? (A Quiz to Celebrate My 6th Blogiversary)

In honor of my sixth blogiversary (which was on the 9th), I decided to just have a little fun. So I’ve made a ten-question quiz about my books and reading habits! I decided not to use one of those quiz makers because 1) it’s a lot of work, and 2) I don’t know how accessible they are for screen readers. So you don’t have to keep track of your results, but you can still guess and see if you got the answer right!

These are all questions that conceivably you could know (or could guess) if you’ve followed my blog and Twitter for a while. But some of them are tricky, and of course no one is going to remember everything I’ve ever said. But I wouldn’t want this to be too easy, a bit of challenge is what makes it fun!

*If you are using a screen reader, hit enter when you reach a spoiler link. Then go back to the previous paragraph, and forward to the next paragraph.*

1. How many books do I have on my bookshelf?

a) Fewer than 50
b) About 150
c) About 400
d) More than 500

The Answer:
b) About 150 // I actually have 132 finished books (if I counted correctly) and 13 ARCs.

2. What do I have a framed picture of on top of my bookshelf?

a) Faery
b) Demon
c) Merman
d) Vampire

The Answer:
Photo of the art in a white frame on top of my white shelf. There are vases with dried roses around and behind it. The art shows a sexy vampire man with long blonde hair, smirking, holding wine glasses of what is presumably blood.d) Vampire // I have this gorgeous sexy vampire artwork by Martina Fackova, which looks so perfect with my dried flowers! Also his eyes follow me when I move. You can find prints of it here.

3. What supernatural do I have the most print books about?

a) Vampires
b) Djinn
c) Faeries
d) Werewolves

The Answer:
a) Vampires // Did I trick anyone into thinking there was no way the answer would be vampire twice in a row? To be fair, what I have in print could’ve been different from what I’ve actually read the most about. But as it turns out, the answer is always vampires in my life. Also the featured image was kind of a hint. I have 21 vampire books! Second place is witches, with 10 books (more if you count other types of magic users). I have 11 fae books. Then it’s 9 demon books, depending on whether a certain series counts. Then 7 dragon books, also depending on whether that same series counts. Then 6 each for djinn and werewolves. Only 4 merfolk. A scattering of other things.

4. What series or book have I read the most times?

a) Real Vampires Don’t Sparkle Series by Amy Fecteau
b) Thieves Series by Lexi Blake
c) Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice
d) Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

The Answer:
Steal the Light by Lexi Blakeb) Thieves Series by Lexi Blake // If you’re thinking, “But Kit! I chose one of the ones that said ‘vampire’ because you said the answer is always vampires!” let me reassure you that the answer is always vampires. Because every single one of these is about vampires lol. I genuinely didn’t plan that when I started typing out answer option. I think I have a problem. I’m just gonna lean into it. More on topic though, I’ve only ready Carry On once and Interview twice. Real Vampires I’ve read kind of three times. Thieves I’ve read five times, I believe, because it’s my comfort read, and the only reason I didn’t read it last year was because I practically know every line, and I’m hoping that taking a break from it will allow me to forget at least a tiny bit.

5. What is my favorite book cover?

a) The Last Sun by K.D. Edwards (art by Micah Epstein)
b) Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi (I couldn’t find the artist)
c) The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg (art by Will Staehle)
d) Trailer Park Fae by Lilith Saintcrow (art by Dan dos Santos)

The Answer:
Trailer Park Fae by Lilith Saintcrow - The illustrated cover shows a moderately attractive and shirtless man sitting in a lawn chair in front of a trailer with trash scattered about. His tattoos are glowing with wispy blue magic, as is the staff-like weapon he's holding.d) Trailer Park Fae by Lilith Saintcrow (art by Dan dos Santos) // I love a lot of book covers, it’s hard to really say one is an absolute favorite, but I have just always especially loved this one. There’s just something about it! (Besides the great art, obviously!)

6. What is my favorite classic?

a) Peter Pan
b) Dracula
c) Frankenstein
d) The Picture of Dorian Gray

The Answer:
a) Peter Pan // So it turns out I lied. Sometimes the answer isn’t vampires! *gasp* The way I feel about most classics is that they have great ideas but too many unnecessary words. Dracula is actually my least favorite on this list, and the one most guilty of unnecessary words (seriously it took like three pages for a character to say, “Hey, I’m doing well!”), though I did enjoy elements of it, like the friendships. Frankenstein is an idea I especially love, which is why I love retellings of it. The Picture of Dorian Gray was one of my favorite books as a teen because it too has a great idea, and so many interesting quotes. But Peter Pan is the one that I actually enjoyed the most. It’s so intriguing to ponder the meanings behind it, the story itself is just kinda fun at times, there’s some pretty writing, there’s an underlying current of darkness, and I love the character of Captain Hook.

7. What is my favorite genre?

a) High fantasy
b) Urban fantasy
c) Dystopian
d) Steampunk

The Answer:
b) Urban fantasy // I’ll read pretty much any subgenre within SFF, but urban fantasy (which is a term I use somewhat broadly to encompass all fantasy set in our world, which is maybe technically low fantasy, but whatever, it’s still my answer from the choices even if we’re being strict about it being set in an urban area) is my true love.

8. How do I feel about movie/series adaptations?

a) Movie first
b) Book first
c) Either order
d) Only the book

The Answer:
d) Only the book // This one’s hard to choose an answer for because I have watch adaptations, sometimes before the book, sometimes after, sometimes without ever reading the book. But, for the most part, I’m not a fan of movie/series adaptations. At least, not if I really liked the book. The adaptation ruins the image in my head because it overtakes it, and then I can’t get my own version back. But sometimes I’ll see a movie, and that makes me curious about the book, and I don’t mind doing it that way.

9. Which of the following is my favorite character?

a) Emery (The Paper Magician Series)
b) Marcus (Thieves Series)
c) Palamedes (The Locked Tomb Series)
d) Sir Robot IV (Saga Series)

The Answer:
Trick question! They’re all my favorites. My reviews for their respective books (The Paper Magician, Steal the Night, Gideon the Ninth, Saga Vol. 9) have at least one entire paragraph about them. So if you knew I loved any of these, you get a point! The first three are all kind of unassuming but very passionate when it comes to what they care about and believe in. Sir Robot is kind of the odd one out on this list, but I love that imperfect, broken, trying to change man.

10. How many books do I read on average per year?

a) 1-100
b) 100-200
c) 200-300
d) 300+

The Answer:
b) 100-200 // You might already know that I no longer set a goal for myself, I read however much I read, and that’s that. But in the past six years, according to Goodreads it has always ended up between 100 and 200. Once it was 103 and once it was 200, so I’m really spread across that range!

    1. Kristen

Vampires is usually a good guess with me! When I was writing the favorite cover question, I was like, “Greg will know this one” lol. Glad it was fun!

  2. Roberta R.

    4) For some reason I thought I was Carry On?
    5) I went for The Paper Magician because I know you love the series LOL
    6) I thought it would be Dorian Gray, maybe because he sorts of remakes himself, if only by not turning old and ugly…
    9) I thought it would be Emery, but you cheated! 😂
    10) My answer was 1-100…

This was a fun post, and would you believe I’ve been toying with doing a similar thing for two years now? But I’m too lazy LOL.

Happy blogoversary, and here’s to many more!
