Bookish News: January/February 2019 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Releases to Get Excited About

Happy New Year, everyone! It’s a brand new year, which means it’s a brand new month, which means there are brand new books coming out! What better way to start off our new years than by adding a bunch more books to our TBRs? 😉

Infernal Providence by J. Armand // Jan 2

Infernal Providence by J. ArmandBlurb:

The inevitable has arrived. Civilizations across the globe have begun to collapse under the insurmountable pressure exerted by the invasions from Hell, and there is no going back. All attempts to staunch the hemorrhaging of mortal lives have produced anemic results at best. As populations and resources are depleted in a steady downward spiral, the skeletal remains of governments worldwide close their borders and abandon international aid treaties in favor of riding out the storm alone in their own dark corners.

While humanity trembles and death tolls soar, the gods and their supernatural allies continue fighting to stymie the ever-advancing Infernal hordes. Each divinity has staked their claim in certain locations to foster relations with the survivors there, be it a modest abbey or multinational empire. Dorian, the Ascended One, and his Alabaster Order have fought without pause for months to tip the delicate balance of peace and chaos ever so slightly in their favor, but it is Dorian’s champion, Nathaniel, who has made the greatest impact on both sides. Known throughout the world as a bringer of hope to the innocent and a foe to demons rivaling the gods themselves, Nathaniel has thrived under his master’s tutelage.

But as the already frenetic pace of demonic invasions accelerates further, no amount of hope or divine might will prepare Earth’s forces for what is about to blow the doors off on its way to total domination.

My Thoughts:

This supernatural-filled series is one of my favorites, and I can’t wait to jump back into the world and see what happens in this book!

The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty // Jan 8 (UK) / Jan 22 (US)

The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. ChakrabortyBlurb:

S. A. Chakraborty continues the sweeping adventure begun in The City of Brass—”the best adult fantasy I’ve read since The Name of the Wind” (#1 New York Times bestselling author Sabaa Tahir)—conjuring a world where djinn summon flames with the snap of a finger and waters run deep with old magic; where blood can be dangerous as any spell, and a clever con artist from Cairo will alter the fate of a kingdom.

Nahri’s life changed forever the moment she accidentally summoned Dara, a formidable, mysterious djinn, during one of her schemes. Whisked from her home in Cairo, she was thrust into the dazzling royal court of Daevabad—and quickly discovered she would need all her grifter instincts to survive there.

Now, with Daevabad entrenched in the dark aftermath of a devastating battle, Nahri must forge a new path for herself. But even as she embraces her heritage and the power it holds, she knows she’s been trapped in a gilded cage, watched by a king who rules from the throne that once belonged to her family—and one misstep will doom her tribe..

Meanwhile, Ali has been exiled for daring to defy his father. Hunted by assassins, adrift on the unforgiving copper sands of his ancestral land, he is forced to rely on the frightening abilities the marid—the unpredictable water spirits—have gifted him. But in doing so, he threatens to unearth a terrible secret his family has long kept buried.

And as a new century approaches and the djinn gather within Daevabad’s towering brass walls for celebrations, a threat brews unseen in the desolate north. It’s a force that would bring a storm of fire straight to the city’s gates . . . and one that seeks the aid of a warrior trapped between worlds, torn between a violent duty he can never escape and a peace he fears he will never deserve.

My Thoughts:

I’ve already had the chance to read this sequel, and WOW! It’s a must-read series for anyone who likes djinn and/or complex plots and characters.

The Ex-Princess by Fiona West // Jan 14

The Ex-Princess by Fiona WestBlurb:

A princess determined to hide. A prince determined to avoid war. A wilderness they’ll both have to cross.

Abelia is content in her menial job and tiny apartment, living as far as possible from her queendom. When royal emissaries arrive to enforce the marriage contract she thought was void, she has no intention of going with them across the Unveiled. Crossing the harsh, unpredictably-magic space between the “civilized” countries on horseback would be foolish, dangerous. But the alternative means losing the chance to say goodbye to her dying father and letting five years of silence be the last thing they share…

As for Edward, he’s handed his kingdom unexpectedly when his brother goes off the rails. Now, he must fight a war he doesn’t think he can win. The only task more daunting will be convincing his contrarian fiancée to cooperate…if only she’d call him back.

No one has ever gotten out of an international marriage contract. Can Abbie find a loophole in time to save the life she’s fought to live?

The Ex-Princess is the first book in the Borderline Chronicles, a lighthearted fantasy series, and can be read as a stand-alone. If you like the Enchanted Forest Chronicles, you’ll love Fiona West’s heart and wit in this delightful modern fantasy adventure for adults. Grab your copy today!

My Thoughts:

I’m very much looking forward to this one because not only does it sound fun, the main character has lupus, and I always love finding disability rep!

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer // Jan 29

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid KemmererBlurb:

In a lush, contemporary fantasy retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Brigid Kemmerer gives readers another compulsively readable romance perfect for fans of Marissa Meyer.

Fall in love, break the curse.

It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.

Nothing has ever been easy for Harper Lacy. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. But when she tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, she’s instead somehow sucked into Rhen’s cursed world.

Break the curse, save the kingdom.

A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn’t know where she is or what to believe. But as she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what’s at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.

My Thoughts:

This is another one with disability rep (cerebral palsy), and it sounds like an interesting retelling!

Ransacker by Emmy Layborne // Jan 29

Ransacker by Emmy LayborneBlurb:

Rare powers. Precious metals. Deadly greed.

Sissel Hemstad and her siblings have been living peacefully in a small town in Montana, trying to blend-in and escape the violent events that haunt them, but they’ve all been tricked — James Peavy, the handsome young man courting Sissel is secretly a Pinkerton spy.

The Hemstads possess supernatural powers bestowed upon their family by the ancient Norse gods. Now Sissel, the youngest at 16, discovers her gift: she is a Ransacker. She can find gold and other precious metals and pull them to her. Hers is an awesome and dangerous gift.

If James discovers her secret, he will undoubtedly report back to his boss, the ruthless Baron Fjelstad who wants desperately to control the Hemstads. But James is not the only person interested in Sissel. She’s also caught the attention of a local mine owner, Isaiah McKray. He is convinced Sissel has a lucky touch when it comes to finding gold.

Sissel is torn between the two men, both determined to have her secrets. With betrayal lurking around every corner, Sissel must tread carefully. Harnessing her powers could summon great fortune… or doom them all.

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed the first book in this series, and although this one is about a different main character (the original MC’s sister), I’m curious to learn more about the world, the family, and the supernatural gifts they have!

Corpse & Crown by Alisa Kwitney // Feb 1

Corpse & Crown by Alisa KwitneyBlurb:

Agatha DeLacey’s family isn’t rich or titled, so studying nursing at Ingold’s East End hospital in London is a rare opportunity for her. Despite the school’s focus on the innovative Bio-Mechanical program, Aggie cares more about the desperately poor human patients who flood the hospital, even if that means providing unauthorized treatment after-hours…and trusting a charming, endlessly resourceful thief.

But the Artful Dodger is barely a step ahead of his underworld rivals, the menacing Bill Sykes and mercurial Oliver Twist, and Aggie’s association with him soon leads her into danger. When a brutal attack leaves her blind, she and the Dodger find themselves at the mercy of an experimental Bio-Mech surgery. Though the procedure restores Aggie’s sight, her new eyes come at an unnerving cost, and the changes in Dodger are even more alarming—instead of seeing Aggie as the girl he fancies, he now views her as a potential threat.

As war between England and Germany brews on the horizon and a sinister medical conspiracy threatens to shatter the uneasy peace in Europe, Aggie and the Dodger must find a way to work together so they can protect their friends and expose the truth…even if it means risking their own survival.

My Thoughts:

This one is also a sequel with different MCs, but I really enjoyed the first book, which was a Frankenstein retelling-ish. It left a lot of questions unanswered though, so I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in this one!

The Ransacker, much like Berserker, has me really curious- I need more stories w/ Norse mythology, but I haven’t read Berserker yet *sigh*. I have it on my list though…

  2. Sam@wlabb

I don’t think I have read a book, where the MC had lupus, and the book does sound fun. I learned about lupus, when I was in grade school, because one of my classmates had it, and his mom spoke to our class about it.

  3. ShootingStarsMag

I have a post tomorrow with some of the books I’m looking forward to in the first half of the year, though I’m sure there are TONS more I need add. Thanks for sharing these! 🙂

  4. Suzanne @ The Bookish Libra

Great list! A Curse So Dark and Lonely is a highly anticipated read for me just because Brigid Kemmere is one of my favorite authors. I didn’t even realize it had disability rep so that makes me even more excited for it.

  5. Becky @ A Fool's Ingenuity

I cannot wait for the release of Kingdom of Copper that book looks so good! And I forgot about The Curse of the Dark and Lonely so glad you included that as a reminder for me. I’m trying to avoid discovering too many new releases simply because I’m trying to keep control of my spending and I can’t afford to know all the books being released. I am excited about the release of The Wicked King, though.

    1. Kristen Burns

That’s what I’m here for, reminding you of books you’ve forgotten 😉 I can’t wait for you to read KoC! I prob would be excited about Wicked King if I’d read Cruel Prince yet lol.

  6. Lola

I bought the first book in that J Armand series a while ago, but haven’t read it yet. Good to see book 5 is out already. That way if I like book 1 I know I have more books I can read next. The rest sounds interesting too.

I already read a 2019 new release by Jordan Ford that I was looking forward too and bought Silk and Steel that I was waiting for. The next Carol Van Natta book that should release later this month is probably the book I am most excited about.

    1. Kristen Burns

It is nice starting series late sometimes since you don’t have to wait for the next books.

Sounds like you have lots of books to get excited for too! I hope you end up liking them all!

  7. Olivia Roach

A Curse so Dark and Lonely is such a beautiful cover and I really love the looks of that! I also really want to read the City of Brass series as you probably know from me commenting on other posts 😀 I have heard some really good things about the Fiona West graphic novel so I am glad to see there is another one coming out! This January I have been working on reading more graphic novels and I am looking forward to it to being able to expand my range as well.

    1. Kristen Burns

It is beautiful! The City of Brass series is so good. I think you might be getting Fiona West mixed up with someone else, maybe Fiona Staples? This one isn’t a graphic novel. It was a really cute book though! And I’ve prob got some recs if you’re looking to read more graphic novels 🙂

  8. Daniela Ark

I’m super excited about a Curse so Dark and Lonely! and I bet the kingdom of Copper is as good as book 1 or even better! I can’t get over how pretty the cover of that series are! 🙂

  9. Daniela Ark

Dory moment! Of course as son as I click “Post comment” I remember I had already read your review of Kingdom of Copper! LOL Maybe that’s why I was SO SURE it was good? SMH! XD

  10. Eline

This is a great list! A lot of these books sound very interesting. I’m very curious about A Curse so dark and lonely. I haven’t read anything by the author yet. But beauty and the beast is always good, plus disability rep.
