Update: Life and Books (Oct 2019)

Still no good news about health stuff. Head problem isn’t any better, and the neurologist doesn’t have a clue. None of my other problems are any better either, but that’s no surprise. And as if I didn’t already have enough problems and injuries my body can’t heal, I hurt my foot the other day.

So what have I been doing to keep myself occupied since I still can’t read or really used electronics, you ask? What a great question! I’ll tell you.

I’ve been really interested in pirates lately, so I’ve been, surprisingly, listening to some non-fiction called The Pirate History Podcast. I also listened to Season 1 of Gay Future, which was hilarious.

I’ve also listened to some movies and series on Netflix with audio description, though I didn’t have much luck. In the Tall Grass was terrible. I didn’t really care for I Am Mother or Unicorn Store either. Living with Yourself Season 1 was alright but never grabbed me. Same for Murder Mystery (the movie with Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler), but for different reasons.

On YouTube, I’ve been listening to a lot of videos and channels about interesting and entertaining facts, like Today I Found Out.

Other than that, I kinda participated in Inktober. And by that I mean I did a drawing for each day’s prompt, but not in ink. Here’s the thread of all my drawings! My tweets didn’t get a lot of love, but I like how some of them came out. Here are a few of my favorites.

Blog/Bookish Updates:

Nothing really. I still don’t know what’s going to happen with the blog. Don’t be surprised if anything on my blog changes (like using a basic featured image instead of one made specifically for the post) or if I take a hiatus, but that probably wouldn’t be until January anyway. I’m still hoping to do my end-of-the-year posts in December.

Books I Received for Review:

Nothing this month.

Books I Finished:

Three Days Till Dawn by R.F. HurteauOur Bloody Pearl by D.N. BrynAn Heir to Thorns and Steel by M.C.A. HogarthBy Vow and Royal Bloodshed by M.C.A. HogarthOn Wings of Bone and Glass by M.C.A. Hogarth

Three Days didn’t fully click with me, but I enjoyed all these.

What I’m Loving:

This month, what I’m loving is…

Gay Future

This was a really funny narrative podcast! It’s a parody of YA dystopians. I plan to talk more about it in a blog post soon-ish.

In Case You Missed It:

Here are the highlights:

– I reviewed Caged by Bey Deckard, a fantastic audiobook about interesting, complex pirates getting themselves into a messed up m/m/m polyamorous relationship.
– I reviewed Salt Magic, Skin Magic by Lee Welch, another fantastic audiobook, this time about some really cool magic and a sweet m/m relationship.
– I wrote some poems about supernatural creatures!

Talk to me!

Have you found any good podcasts or Netflix movies/series lately?

Glad to see that you’re still around despite all your health issues. Here’s hoping they get to the bottom of them soon.
    Your drawings are getting great.
Oh, and I thought Murder Mystery was a dreadful film!!!
    Keep smiling.

I’m so sorry no one yet managed to figure out what your problems are due to. Also because blogging and reading and drawing and gaming and stuff are the things that you love and that helped you through your pain before. I can’t imagine not being able to blog (or having a hard time to), because it’s my only outlet. It must suck doubly when you already have problems that prevent you from doing other things we take for granted. I hope you find someone able to help you.

I enjoyed all those Inktober vignettes!

Sorry the doctors are still of no help. It must be really frustrating, but it’s great that you are finding some good ways to keep yourself busy. The Inktober Challenge is very cool.

I’m sorry you haven’t been getting any good answers regarding your health issues. I hope it starts to get straightened out soon.

Sometimes I think I’m the only person who still likes Adam Sandler movies!

I feel like pirates and mermen go so well together? Why don’t we have more stories of those? Such a natural fit. They’d be GREAT pirates, striking from under the sea and carrying the booty away. You know? Anyways… LOVE Overgrown and Release the Kraken!

  6. Erica Metcalf

Oh my gosh! I love your inktober work! Sorry to hear the doc still can’t find an answer! I hope they figure it out soon <3 <3 And I agree, In the Tall Grass was miserable to watch! The novella was so much better. I think if they had cut like an hour off of the film it would have been better!

Sorry the health problems continue with no answer or explanation. I will continue to send good thoughts your way in the hope it would help and if I could do more I totally would be beyond googling symptoms (which don’t do I always end up convinced I’m dying).

You weren’t alone with some of your thoughts on Netflix stuff. I was going to watch In The Tall Grass and then folks at work told me it was terrible so skipped it. I’m currently binge watching Queer Eye and it is so good.

Sorry your drawings didn’t get more love. I remember seeing one was it a mummy hand? I thought that was really cool. You’re gonna tell me imagined that aren’t you?

    1. Kristen Burns

Thank you <3 I watched In The tall Grass because someone else told me it didn't make any sense, but they always fall asleep during movies, so I had to make sure it wasn't just them LOL. no, you didn't imagine The mummy hand, haha. I think that one actually got more likes than any other drawing.

I’m sorry that none of your health issues seem to be getting any better, and your poor foot now too! I love your drawings – you did a great job. As for Netflix shows, I really loved Dead to Me if you haven’t seen it yet. There’s only one season, but there will be another. I’m also watching iZombie!

Sorry to hear that you’re no closer to getting the solutions you need for your health problems: I can’t imagine how draining it must be to be in pain as much as you are.
I’m glad to hear you’ve found something to replace reading. I’ve seem some great original podcasts on Audible, have you seen them?
I hope you have a good week, Kristen. x

  10. Lily

I’m sorry you are still having health problems. I know how frustrating it can be ): I really do hope they find and resolve it soon so you can feel better. Will keep you in my thoughts.
    Your drawings are pretty awesome!

  11. Olivia Roach

Agh, so annoying about them being entirely clueless about what is happening :/ On the good news though, I am loving your sketches so much! I always love seeing your artwork and you’re so good at it. Plus, those covers to the series your reading by Hogarth are absolutely gorgeous. I am looking forward to hearing about those books.

  12. Vlora

I’m sorry you’re not doing great healthwise! Not knowing what’s happening is horrible, I hope they manage to figure it out soon. Your drawings are great, good on you for participating in Inktober! And thanks for the podcast recs too. 🙂
