In Sex Criminals Vol. 1, a woman who stops time when she orgasms finally meets a man who can do the same. In The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a naive couple finds themselves in a creepy mansion when they try to get out of the rain. In Day Men Vol. 1, David, the man who protects a family of vampires during the day, finds himself in the middle of the start of a war between two vampire families. Enjoy my mini reviews for these three graphic novels!
Sex Criminals Vol. 1 by Matt Fraction, Chip Zdarsky

This was so hilarious I couldn't even handle it! But also, THIS COUPLE. Everyone should aspire to have a relationship like the one they have! (Well, you know, minus the whole Bonnie and Clyde/bank robbing thing.) They were so open and secure and could talk about literally EVERYTHING with no jealousy or judgment. And their first date lasted 55 hours. I once had a second date that lasted 8 hours, and I thought that was pretty good, but Suzie and Jon put me to shame. There was a bit of heavier stuff involving mental illness, but it balanced out the funny. The only thing that bothered me was this seemingly major logic flaw, unless I'm just not understanding something, in which two people have to orgasm at the same time in order to go into The Quiet (the time stopping thing) together, Jon and Suzie have to really work together to accomplish it, yet the sex cops are constantly in The Quiet with them despite there being no way they could've synced up perfectly. But aside from that... This couple. They were adorable. And imperfect. I loved it.
*I've read this book multiple times. This review was written after my 1st read, updated slightly after my 2nd.*

Day Men Vol. 1 by Matt Gagnon, Michael Alan Nelson, Brian Stelfreeze

I ended up watching the live musical of Rocky Horror that Fox did this past October. It was pretty good and I really enjoyed some of the actors – especially Adam Lambert. I think I’ll pass on the comic though. I also doubt I will continue on with Sex Criminals but I’m so glad you’re enjoying them.
The remake? I can’t say I have any desire to watch that lol. From what I’ve seen online, general consensus is that Adam Lambert was the best thing about it. Thanks, sorry you didn’t enjoy Sex Criminals more. It kind of seems to be going downhill a bit for me, haven’t loved the other volumes as much as Vol. 1 :-/ But I’m still giving it a chance.
Well! I didn’t even know books like that first one existed. I’ve learned something today!
Lol it’s definitely a unique idea. Really fun though!
The couple in Sex Criminals sounds so perfect! They sound like a couple I would like to read about with how open they are with each other. The concept of it sounds pretty original too.
That second one sounds like a good book for fans of that, although that cover looks a bit weird?
Sorry Day man fell a bit flat for you, it did sound promising with the vampires and such. Sorry it didn’t grab you, but it’s nice at least the art was good.
They were so adorable and perfect! And yeah, definitely an original concept lol.
The cover is just stills from the movie, but, if you haven’t seen the movie, I can see why the cover would look weird. It’s a weird movie lol.
Thanks. I really want some good graphic novels about vampires, but Day Men just isn’t the one for me.
So THAT’s what’s going on in this comic lol. So what happens in the Quiet? I guess maybe I better read this huh? 🙂 And sex cops??
Rocky Horror- yay!! I tried to get Hoopla and my library doesn’t participate. WTF? I was looking over there and there were a TON of graphic novels. I could get SO many GN reviews out if I get Hoopla.
Having said that, GN’s seem to be so hit or miss lately. I’m hoping a few I have on order don’t suck.
Lol you didn’t know what the premise was? Nothing really happens in The Quiet, it’s just that time stops and there are cool colors, basically. But since they can still move around, they can do stuff without being seen, hence the bank robbing.
I’m sorry your library sucks :-/ That really is a shame they don’t participate in Hoopla, I didn’t even realize there were any libraries that didn’t participate. Hoopla is where I get almost all my graphic novels. But I’ve also had a lot of misses with them. I’ve found one coming out soon that I might splurge on since it looks really good but prob won’t be on Hoopla.
I remember discovering Rocky Horror when I was a teen and just being blown away – it felt so daring to be watching something so “adult”! 😉
My mom grew up with RHPS as a teen, so she loved it and I’ve been watching it since I was like… born lol. Weird, I know, but I specifically remember singing along to all the songs by the time I was 5. But it wasn’t until I watched it as a teen that I realized how inappropriate it was, and I totally felt the same way 😛
Oh, I LOVE Rocky Horror. Not sure I really need the comic, but it sounds kind of cool for collectors. 🙂 I really need to read Sex Criminals. I’m glad you are enjoying the series!

Yay Rocky Horror fan! Can’t blame you about the comic though. I wouldn’t have read if not for the fact that it was free to skim through (borrowed from Hoopla). It would be cool for collectors though. Sex Criminals is definitely a unique and fun series, thanks!
Fun fact: I have never seen Rocky Horror ever. Except for the snippets that were in Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Fun fact: I haven’t seen Perks of Being a Wallflower, so I don’t know what snippets it had 😛 But you should totally watch Rocky Horror! Just be ready for it to be really weird 😉
A Rocky Horror comic book! OMG, I need to read that. LOL I loved the movie, but since it’s verbatim, I’ll probably skim it like you did.
Sex Criminals sounds hilarious. Simultaneous orgasms—yea right! jk. 😀 ~Aleen
Lol yeah it was fun since I also love the movie.
Sex Criminals was definitely fun, and right? The fact that they manage that so often is probably the most fantasy part of the whole graphic novel, haha 😛
Okay, I’m going to have to check out Sex Criminals because it sounds funny. And I might have giggled about you singing while reading Rocky Horror. Day Men…I think it’s one I can skip. You know I’m not much of a graphic novel person but I *will* see if I can find Sex Criminals. The premise is fascinating. 🙂
It was so funny! And I love the Rocky Horror soundtrack, couldn’t resist lol. Hope you like Sex Criminals if you find it!
Let’s do the time-warp agaaaaiiinnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XD
It’s just a jump to the left… 😉
I really liked Sex Criminals too, although I did find it super annoying that Suzie’s job as a librarian is…not an accurate representation of a librarian. LOL! Total pet peeve. I do think that the entire premise, and the sex positivity of the series overall, is awesome though.
Yay for a fellow Sex Criminals fan! I have no idea what it’s like to be a librarian so I didn’t even pay attention to how it was portrayed. That’s unfortunate that it was inaccurate :-/ But yeah, I also think it’s great how sex positive the series is 🙂
