In Galdranorn and the Fury, Ceres, a snow creature, wakes up in Galdranorn’s home after being poisoned and, upon realizing how terrible Galdranorn’s life has been, decides to help him. In iZombie Vol. 3, zombie girl Gwen and her friends get into more supernatural trouble, and a bigger threat gets closer. In Sex Criminals Vol. 3, Jon and Suzie attempt to find others like them in order to join forces and stop the sex cops. Enjoy my mini reviews for these three graphic novels!
Galdranorn and the Fury by DoubleThickCustard
This wasn't the most intricate or realistic story ever written---it was really just about two beings being thrown into each others' paths and was kinda instalove-y---but I enjoyed it! Honestly, it was the artwork that really drew me in and that I loved the most. The coloring was simplistic with mostly a soft blue-ish white and green-ish sepia tones, plus the occasional splash of red for blood, but it worked in a way that was gorgeous, and the drawings themselves were gorgeous too. I did enjoy the characters and the story too though. Both characters were so sassy in such a dry kind of way. And once I learned Galdranorn's story and saw the things he'd written in the journal, I felt terrible for the poor man and could understand why he was such a misanthrope. And the romance was sweet, though do be aware there's a lot of nudity and some very explicit x-rated activity. From what I understand, it's just the beginning of what's supposed to be a whole longer thing, but I can't find any more about these two. This works well enough alone though just as a story about two characters falling in love and one of them getting a kind of second chance to have a better life.
*This review is based on the webcomic. Other formats may have differences I am not aware of. (Though at the time of writing this review, there are no other formats available that I can find anyway.)*
iZombie Vol. 3: Six Feet Under and Rising by Chris Roberson, Michael Allred
I liked the same things about this one as I liked about the previous volumes---great characters, fun supernatural stuff, gorgeous art. This one also had more story, like the last volume. The twists were good too. It was a fun read. And I was cracking up so much when Amon was going off on this whole passionate speech about skee ball. It was such a random, unexpected thing for anyone to be so passionate about, let alone a many-thousand-year-old, snazzily-dressing, brandy/whiskey-drinking, formal mummy. This is a really short review, but I don't really know what else to say other than this is just a cool series.
Sex Criminals Vol. 3 by Matt Fraction, Chip Zdarsky
I don't know why, but this series has been going downhill for me :-/ It wasn't that I didn't enjoy this while reading, but so far I've found each volume less funny than the previous one, and this one just didn't leave much of an impression on me. I barely even remembered what happened in it an hour after reading it. Part of the problem might be that I wasn't even sure what any of the characters were trying to do. I know Suzie and Jon want revenge on the sex cops, but I didn't see how contacting the others like them were going to help them accomplish that. Same for Myrtle and how I didn't understand why she was sleeping with the psychiatrist. So I guess I was entertained while reading, but not particularly invested.
I need to check out the iZombie series, I really enjoyed the TV show😁
I haven’t seen the TV show. I’d be curious to know how they compare!
Do you watch iZombie? If so, how do the graphic novels compare to the show? I love the show.
I haven’t seen it, but I feel like I’ve heard the show is pretty different, because the comic is more of a cohesive story altogether.
Your reviews were spot on. I love the artist’s drawing style in Gladranorn and how color was used. Sex Criminals started out so funny, I loved the humor. But that seems to be going to the wayside. Haven’t read iZombie. Didn’t know it was a TV show. I know graphic novels are so labor intensive, I’m sorry the story(s) have gotten lost. Thanks Kristen! ❤️❤️
Oh, yay, that’s awesome that you’ve read some of these too! Yeah, I absolutely loved the first volume of sex criminals, but it has really lost a lot of the humor and charm.
I kind of love that washed out/muted look of that first cover.
I dabble din comics earlier this year but then went to ALA and didn’t have time. Maybe I can start up again in 2019.

The art is super pretty. The whole comic uses color in a really unique way.
I definitely think you should try comics again 🙂
I have watched a few episodes of the TV show iZombie so the comic one seems very inviting for me. Great reads.
I haven’t seen the show, but I hope you like the comic if you give it a try!
