Bookish News: More May/June 2019 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Releases to Get Excited About

Ummm… Happy June? I don’t know, I never know how to start these posts! Anyway, it’s not the intro that counts, it’s the books, right? And I do have some of those! If you missed the first May/June 2019 releases post, you can find that here, or just keep on scrolling for the rest that I’ve found!

Dawn Slayer by Clara Coulson // May 6

Dawn Slayer by Clara CoulsonBlurb:

No matter where Cal Kinsey goes, danger always follows.

After being kicked out of his hometown by a hitman wizard with a strong vendetta, Calvin Kinsey is on his own for the first time in years. Without his job at DSI, he no longer has any legal protections to shield him from the wrath of his many supernatural enemies. And to make matters worse, he can’t even speak to any of his friends without breaking the magic oath branded onto his arm. There is, however, one exception: Cooper Lee.

But when Cal’s plans to meet up with the long-absent Cooper get sidetracked by an unexpected blizzard, he’s thrust into the middle of a developing struggle in the snowy heart of Moscow. The Black Knights have smuggled a dangerous magic artifact into the city on behalf of their mysterious benefactors, and those benefactors will do anything to obtain this artifact—even if it means burning the entire city to the ground.

Teaming up with new acquaintances and old thorns in his side, Cal must navigate a perilous situation that pits him against the two types of people he fears fighting the most: those whose power he cannot overcome and those he once called allies.

Dawn Slayer is the seventh book in the action-packed City of Crows urban fantasy series.

My Thoughts:

This whole series is pure gripping and action-packed urban fantasy with a lovable main character, and this one is no different!

The Un-Queen by Fiona West // Jun 1

The Un-Queen by Fiona WestBlurb:

Abbie and Edward are getting married in 141 days…probably.

After years of being separated, Ex-Princess Abelia and King Edward find themselves on opposites sides of the continent again, spending weekends together when they can. Their fledgling relationship is just getting off the ground, but the distance isn’t making things easy; neither is navigating their newfound intimacy when they’re together.

When opponents threaten to derail their plans by whatever means necessary, the couple must take drastic measures to protect what they’ve built or be torn apart once again. Will the cost of being together be a price they’re willing to pay?

They’ll need a miracle to pull this off by Twelfth Month…

The Un-Queen is the second book in the Borderline Chronicles. This sweet fantasy romance with a guaranteed HEA has all the humor and drama you’d expect from a strong-willed couple; it’s the wedding you’ve been waiting for!

My Thoughts:

The first book in this series was such a fun and realistic fantasy romance (with a chronically ill heroine!), and this time there’s going to be a wedding!

Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh // Jun 18

Silver in the Wood by Emily TeshBlurb:

There is a Wild Man who lives in the deep quiet of Greenhollow, and he listens to the wood. Tobias, tethered to the forest, does not dwell on his past life, but he lives a perfectly unremarkable existence with his cottage, his cat, and his dryads.

When Greenhollow Hall acquires a handsome, intensely curious new owner in Henry Silver, everything changes. Old secrets better left buried are dug up, and Tobias is forced to reckon with his troubled past—both the green magic of the woods, and the dark things that rest in its heart.

My Thoughts:

I have to admit I didn’t quite jive with the fairytale-esque style in this one, but I think other readers will enjoy this lightly magical, soft m/m novella!

Soul of the Sword by Julie Kagawa // Jun 18

Soul of the Sword by Julie KagawaBlurb:

One thousand years ago, a wish was made and a sword of rage and lightning was forged. Kamigoroshi. The Godslayer. A weapon powerful enough to seal away the formidable demon Hakaimono.

Now he has broken free.

Kitsune shapeshifter Yumeko has one task: to take her piece of the ancient and powerful Scroll of a Thousand Prayers to the Steel Feather temple in order to prevent the summoning of the Harbinger of Change, the great Kami Dragon who will grant one wish to whomever holds the scroll. But she has a new enemy now, more dangerous than any she has yet faced. The demon Hakaimono is free at last, and he has possessed the very person Yumeko trusted to protect her from the evil at her heels, Kage Tatsumi of the Shadow Clan.

Hakaimono has only one goal: to break the curse of the sword and set himself free to rain chaos and destruction over the land forevermore. To do so, he will need the scroll. And Yumeko is the only one standing in his way.

My Thoughts:

I’ve already this one as well, and thought it was a great sequel! These books have such lovable, eclectic characters and a really cool Japanese-inspired high fantasy setting!

The Girl in Red by Christina Henry // Jun 18

The Girl in Red by Christina HenryBlurb:

It’s not safe for anyone alone in the woods. There are predators that come out at night: critters and coyotes, snakes and wolves. But the woman in the red jacket has no choice. Not since the Crisis came, decimated the population, and sent those who survived fleeing into quarantine camps that serve as breeding grounds for death, destruction, and disease. She is just a woman trying not to get killed in a world that doesn’t look anything like the one she grew up in, the one that was perfectly sane and normal and boring until three months ago.

There are worse threats in the woods than the things that stalk their prey at night. Sometimes, there are men. Men with dark desires, weak wills, and evil intents. Men in uniform with classified information, deadly secrets, and unforgiving orders. And sometimes, just sometimes, there’s something worse than all of the horrible people and vicious beasts combined.

Red doesn’t like to think of herself as a killer, but she isn’t about to let herself get eaten up just because she is a woman alone in the woods….

My Thoughts:

I know there are some Little Red Riding Hood retellings out there, but I feel like not that many? I’ve never read one, at least, which makes me excited for this. And I love that this one is post-apocalyptic since that’s so unexpected!

Old Souls by Brian McDonald & Les McClaine // Jun 25

Old Souls by Brian McDonald & Les McClaineBlurb:

From Brian McDonald and Les McClaine comes Old Souls, a supernatural graphic novel about addiction, obsession, and the things we do for family.

Chris Olsen has a good life. He has a regular job, a wife and daughter who love him, and a promising future. By any measure this is a good life, but it isn’t his first.

When a troubling encounter with a homeless man triggers something inside Chris, memories of his past lives bubble to the surface. A lost Chinese boy, a wailing grandmother, and a love so powerful it never left his soul—all compete for his attention.

Chris sinks deep into the seedy and seductive world of “grave robbers,” vagrants known for their ability to relive their former lives. But can he find closure to a tragic episode in his past without losing himself in the process?

My Thoughts:

This one has a really cool premise that seems like it has the potential for the type of emotional intensity I enjoy, and it’s a graphic novel!

Wicked Fox by Kat Cho // Jun 25

Wicked Fox by Kat ChoBlurb:

A fresh and addictive fantasy-romance set in modern-day Seoul.

Eighteen-year-old Gu Miyoung has a secret–she’s a gumiho, a nine-tailed fox who must devour the energy of men in order to survive. Because so few believe in the old tales anymore, and with so many evil men no one will miss, the modern city of Seoul is the perfect place to hide and hunt.

But after feeding one full moon, Miyoung crosses paths with Jihoon, a human boy, being attacked by a goblin deep in the forest. Against her better judgment, she violates the rules of survival to rescue the boy, losing her fox bead–her gumiho soul–in the process.

Jihoon knows Miyoung is more than just a beautiful girl–he saw her nine tails the night she saved his life. His grandmother used to tell him stories of the gumiho, of their power and the danger they pose to humans. He’s drawn to her anyway.

With murderous forces lurking in the background, Miyoung and Jihoon develop a tenuous friendship that blossoms into something more. But when a young shaman tries to reunite Miyoung with her bead, the consequences are disastrous . . . forcing Miyoung to choose between her immortal life and Jihoon’s.

My Thoughts:

I do love reading about uncommon supernatural creatures and books set in non-US countries, plus look at that gorgeous cover!

The Girl in Red sounds awesome,l I’m glad I read the blurb because if I thought it was just a retelling I might have skipped over, but the post apoc thing… yeah that could be cool. and Lindsi over at Dog-Ear loved it! I think I’m gonna grab it.

I think i want to get Wicked Fox- I’ve been seeing it around lately and I love the sound of Korean mythology.

  2. Sophia Rose

The Girl in Red was already on the list. I still need to read the first Julie Kagawa. The soft m/m fantasy novella has some appeal.

Looks like some good ones all around.

  3. Jen Mullen

I loved The Girl in Red and liked Soul of the Sword! It took me a little to get caught up on Kagawa’s sequel because it had been so long since I read the first one. Wicked Fox is on my list. 🙂

  4. Sam@wlabb

I have been hearing the Henry book is quite addictive. Seems like a rather dark re-telling, but I guess the legit versions of those tales are rather macabre to start with. I have been wanting to read the new Kagawa series. I love her! Glad to hear Sword was a good addition to the series.

    1. Kristen Burns

They really are. I mean, doesn’t the wolf eat the grandmother?? I can’t imagine it getting much worse than that lol. I haven’t read Kagawa’s other books, but this series is great!

  5. Dani @ Perspective of a Writer

I’m so excited for Soul of the Sword and Wicked Fox, both are books I have to read so eeeeeeiiiiii! I’m getting to them soon. I wanted to read the Girl in Red but I was uncertain about it. The fact its a retelling of Red Riding Hood is so neat?! Great list Kristen. 😉

  6. Suzanne @ The Bookish Libra

I’m getting ready to start The Girl in Red this week and I’m so excited for it. I loved Henry’s last book so I have very high hopes that this will be another great read. I love that it’s post apocalyptic too.

  7. ShootingStarsMag

I’m really curious about The Girl in Red. I need to read something by the author in general. I like the sound of a lot of her books. I’m curious about Old Souls too. Love graphic novels.

The Un-Queen book caught my eye because of it’s cover. It really makes it look like more of a romance, and from the synopsis I can see the plot hinges on it a lot. And as a romance lover, that sounds perfect for me 😀 I also really have been seeing Wicked Fox around a lot so I am looking forward to reviews of that one coming in. I need to read a Julie Kawaga book eventually DD: I have been meaning to read one forever.
