Bookish News: November/December 2018 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Releases to Get Excited About

My gosh, did I say I was excited for the releases coming out the last two months? Well, I was. But the next two months—THE NEXT TWO MONTHS. These are some great books, my friends. I already know it. (And this isn’t even all of them since the post got long and some aren’t on Goodreads yet.)

Anyway, we’ve got demons, elves, shifters, dragons, fae, mages, orcs, and even a human or two. Many of these are series books, but don’t let that put you off! That just means you get to binge-read multiple books in a row 😉 And don’t worry, I’ve got some standalones and series starters too. I’m highly anticipating some of these, I’ve already enjoyed a few of them, and I can’t wait to see what you all think!

Hell Divers IV: Wolves by Nicholas Sansbury Smith // Nov 6

Hell Divers IV: Wolves by Nicholas Sansbury SmithBlurb:

They dive so humanity survives. Now they take to the sea.

In the fourth installment of the award-winning and USA Today bestselling Hell Divers series, the Sea Wolf sets out to search for the Metal Islands. Leading the expedition is legendary Hell Diver Xavier Rodriguez. After enduring for a decade on the poisoned surface, his survival skills will be put to the test on the dangerous open seas. But storms, sea monsters, and the cannibalistic Cazadores aren’t the only threat to X and his small crew. Their mission will uncover hard truths about the history of the war that left humankind stranded in the air for centuries. And the fate of those still living on the airships might very well rest on this fragile and perilous journey to find a new home.

My Thoughts:

This has been a superb, intense post-apocalypse series so far, and since I’ve already read this one, I can tell you this was no exception!

Dark Arts and a Daquiri by Annette Marie // Nov 16

Dark Arts and a Daquiri by Annette MarieBlurb:

When I found myself facing down the scariest black-magic felon in the city, practically daring him to abduct me, I had to wonder exactly how I ended up here.

It all started when I accidentally landed a job as a bartender—but not at a bar. At a guild, populated by mages, sorcerers, alchemists, witches, and psychics. Good thing this lame-o human is adaptable, right?

Then my favorite guild members—three sexy, powerful, and intermittently charming mages—asked for my help. Did they want access to my encyclopedic knowledge of cocktails? Oh no. They wanted to wrap me up in a pretty ribbon and plunk me in the crosshairs of a murderous rogue to lure him out of hiding.

So that’s what we did. And that’s why I’m here. About to be kidnapped. Oh, and our grand plan for safely capturing said murderous rogue? Yeah, that completely fell apart about two minutes ago.

Why did I agree to this again?

My Thoughts:

The first book in this new urban fantasy series was fun, so I imagine this one will be too!

The Burning Magus by Don Allmon // Nov 19

The Burning Magus by Don AllmonBlurb:

JT was a perfectly happy orc building cars in the Arizona desert until his old friend and sometimes lover Austin showed up and talked him into one last crime. Now “one last crime” has snowballed. With a new team of thieves—a supersoldier, a hacker, a driver, a graffiti artist, and a seafaring wizard—JT and Austin are determined to free an artificial intelligence from the dungeon of the Burning Magus.

For JT, this job is more than a prison break; it’s a do-over of The Job That Went Bad two years ago, the catastrophe in which JT lost his closest friend and then chose to abandon everything, even Austin. Maybe this time no one will die. Maybe this time JT can return to Arizona and bury his old life for good.

Except Austin won’t be buried. After two years alone, Austin knows he wants JT—not just as a partner in crime, but as the lover he always should have been. Maybe this time they won’t make the same mistakes, especially when it comes to each other.

My Thoughts:

I’ve already had the chance to read this one, and it was a great ending to an action-packed, sexually charged M/M urban fantasy/cyberpunk series!

Gunsmoke & Glamour by Hillary Monahan // Nov 20

Gunsmoke & Glamour by Hillary MonahanBlurb:

Marshall Clayton Jensen’s job is to fix things for the people too weird for the government to touch—witches, fairies, monsters. When Clay finds himself on the receiving end of a witch’s curse following a breakup from the love of his life, a fairy named Cora, Clay enlists the help of his best friend Doc Irene and his ex-girlfriend’s promiscuous sister Adelaide to search for a cure before time runs out.

My Thoughts:

I love me some fantasy westerns! Plus, it’s not in the blurb, but I’ve heard this one has trans and bi/pan rep too!

The Mercenaries of the Stolen Moon by Megan Derr // Nov 21

The Mercenaries of the Stolen Moon by Megan DerrBlurb:

For twenty years Myra has served the High King, so familiar, respected, and envied the rest of the palace calls him the High Secretary. For twenty years he has kept his secrets buried, and after so long he dares to believe he has left his past behind. But during the Festival of Harmony, tragedy strikes, and Myra’s past is dragged into the present.

Once third in command of Fathoms Deep, Charlaine is used to shadows and secrets, but even he is shocked to learn what his best friend, and the man he secretly loves, has been hiding all these years. In the wake of a terrible tragedy, he doesn’t know what to do—except whatever it takes to help his friends.

Though Jac is a member of the Three-headed Dragons and primary bodyguard to the High Consort, she is used to being overlooked and underestimated. But she didn’t earn her spurs by backing down, and she’s not about to do so now—even if she must defy the High Throne itself to save the man she’s falling in love with.

My Thoughts:

Each book in this series focuses on different characters, and I once half-joked/half-seriously-said I loved all the characters so much that I’d even read a book about Myra… and we’re actually getting one about him! So of course I’m looking forward to it.

Waypoint by Deborah Adams & Kimberley PerkinsBlurb:

How far will they go to restore the power?

It’s been lights-out for three months and society is already falling into chaos.

Teenage tech-genius Simon Harper and his team of fellow gamers have been searching for the cause of the outage since it went down. My Thoughts:

I’ve already had the chance to read this one, and though it isn’t super SFF, it’s got twins, cross-country trekking, secrets, a bit of romance, and plenty of danger!

Outcast by Lexi Blake // Dec 4

Outcast by Lexi BlakeBlurb:

On the hunt for a vicious killer, Kelsey discovers that the true threat lies closer than she could have ever imagined.

It’s been months since Trent Wilcox was sentenced to exile, but Kelsey hasn’t given up on finding a way to bring him home. Grayson Sloane doesn’t share her enthusiasm. Loving two men is challenging enough without them being at each other’s throats, and she is unwilling to compromise on the future she knows is meant for them.

Kelsey’s only hope for bringing them all together comes in the form of the Hell lord who insisted on Trent’s exile – Gray’s father. Lord Sloane is willing to acquiesce on Trent’s punishment if Kelsey will do one little job for him. A stray wolf is on a killing spree in Wyoming and he’s killed a number of witches in Lord Sloane’s service. The situation is made all the more complicated by the presence of a sinister werewolf cult in the area. Lupus Solum is known for being cruel to their own kind, and even worse to outsiders.

Caught between a craven wolf cult, a brutal killer, a Hell lord, and a mounting pile of bodies, Kelsey is going to have her work cut out for her. But if she can solve the case, she might have a chance to earn her happily ever after.

My Thoughts:

I’m generally very positive in these posts because I’m sharing books that I’m genuinely excited for and/or that I think other people will love. I will admit I have some reservations about this book though. The original Thieves series is one of my absolute favorites, but this spin-off series has been rocky for me. So fingers crossed this one will turn out to be one that I enjoy!

Black City Dragon by Richard A. Knaak // Dec 18

Black City Dragon by Richard A. KnaakBlurb:

A historical urban fantasy set in Prohibition-era Chicago, which combines action, mystery, and romance against a backdrop of gangland wars and the threat of supernatural horror.

For sixteen hundred years, Nick Medea has guarded the gate between our world and Feirie, preventing the Wyld–the darkest Feirie of all–from coming into Chicago to find human prey. But since he defeated Oberon, more and more Wyld have been slipping through. Nick and his Feirie companion, the shapeshifter, Fetch, have been busy hunting them down.

Nick keeps coming across the Dacian Draco, the sign of his ancient enemy Galerius, including a tattoo worn by a human thug. Unfortunately, every trail ends as if years old. Claryce, Nick’s reincarnated love, has narrowly escaped two attempts on her life, and when Nick sees her wearing a broach with the Draco on it, he knows they must look more deeply into her former lives.

With Wyld and gangsters wreaking havoc in Chicago, Nick and Claryce must confront the secrets of their pasts if they are to have any hope of finding out Galerius’s plans before it’s too late to stop them. Nick will need the help of all his friends, both human and Feirie, and the powers of the dragon within him, to keep Galerius from endangering the gate, Chicago, and all of humanity.

My Thoughts:

This is a great 1920s urban fantasy series with a really interesting combination of paranormal, historical, and religious elements! I’ve already had the chance to read this one as well, and I enjoyed it just as much as the previous books!

Yay for more Hell Divers! And Dark arts and a Daiquiri- ooh that series has a sequel already? I need to read the first one ASAP…

The Mercenaries of the Stolen moon… love that cover.

  2. Lola

These past few months have been full of new releases I was excited about. As for the next few months I am waiting on the next This Time Forever book by Kelly Jensen and the next Pirates of Felicity book. Besides that I can’t think of any at the moment. I hope I can get a copy of Dark Arts and a Daiquiri, book one was fun, so I hope book two will be good too. That blue unicorn series sounds good too. I have the first book in that Megan Derr series, but haven’t read it yet. I hope you’ll enjoy all the books on your list :).

  3. Karen

I really wan tot start the Hell Divers series. I have the first two books but you know the drill…haven’t gotten to them yet lol

Things really lighten up for me starting next month so I’ll be getting back to my TBR pile.

I liked the ending of the Burnign Magus. Such a weird series but it worked.

Wow! These are some exciting looking books. I don’t know why I’ve not started Hell Divers yet. I’ve not heard anything bad about it that I can recall! Thanks for sharing (running off to update Goodreads list).

  5. Olivia Roach

I still haven’t read one yet but when I see an Annette Marie book featured in a blog post I also get excited myself because I haven’t heard a single bad thing about any of her books! Also, I like the sound of a lot of these but I am not entirely sure if they are worth me picking up or adding to my wishlist yet. I think I’m going to wait it out and see what reviews say first. But thanks for getting this post together!

    1. Kristen Burns

Her books are pretty popular! My favorite of hers is the Steel & Stone series, so that’s what I’d personally rec trying first 😉 I totally understand wanting to wait for more reviews!

  6. Becky @ A Fool's Ingenuity

Dark Arts and Daquiri I want to read for the title alone (who doesn’t want alcohol with their book titles?) but also I want to read with a drink in hand, is that wrong? And Black City Dragon looks really cool love the cover and it sounds like a really cool book I want on my radar!

    1. Kristen Burns

Lol I love that you were all excited about the alcohol in this post and then the other post you commented on today was also a book with alcohol in the title, haha. But nope, totally not wrong to want a good drink to go with your good book 😉 The Black City Dragon series is such an interesting one!

I’m not sure exactly what you’re referring to when you say major holes, but there were some things explained in later books about the world, like how the sirens evolved so quickly. The Black City Saint series has one of the most unique combinations of things I’ve ever read about!
