The Weekly Update: 4/17/16

Let's see... no word on the laptop yet (though this one is getting even slower), no crazy dreams, no ridiculous lawn mowing or construction---I don't even know what to talk about this week! But quite frankly I'm not complaining since I'd rather not have computer troubles and loud noises when I'm trying to sleep.

I do have lots of bookish things to share though, so I'll just skip right to that!

Blog/Bookish Updates:

First of all, DISNEY GOT THE FILM RIGHTS TO THE PAPER MAGICIAN AND I AM VERY UNHAPPY ABOUT THIS. I feel bad for saying that because it’s great for authors to get their books made into movies, it’s like the ultimate dream come true for them. But if you’d read my post about why I don’t watch movie adaptations, and if you’ve also read my review of The Paper Magician, then you understand why this is a nightmare for me! THEY’RE GOING TO RUIN THE IMAGE I HAVE IN MY HEAD OF ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE CHARACTERS. I will spend the rest of my life cautiously trying to avoid ever seeing a photo or hearing the name of whatever actor you get, Disney. I WON’T LET YOU TAKE EMERY FROM ME.

Second of all, and in better news, I got auto-approved by my favorite publisher on Netgalley 😀 *happy dance*

Third, I found out I can get backlisted ebooks from another publisher I get ARCs from which is also 😀 *happy dance* because I have a bunch of their books on my TBR from before I even started reviewing for them. It also means I can binge read some series which is the thing I miss most since I’ve started reading ARCs!

As a side note, I don’t know if these things sound braggy, I just get genuinely excited, and I like to share my excitement with you guys because you all understand and because I wouldn’t even be getting these things if it weren’t for the awesome community that has been supportive since Day 1. Plus I can’t afford a lot of books, and even though I didn’t even know it was possible to get them free when I started this blog, they’re turning out to be super helpful. So I’m extremely grateful! (Not saying anyone else isn’t. Just expressing my own gratitude.)

Back on track, fourth, I’m getting braver! I’m actually requesting from Edelweiss instead of just taking ones that you can download immediately. It was stupid for me to worry so much. The worst that can happen is I get denied and therefore don’t get the book. But if I don’t even request, then I definitely don’t get the book. In other words, I’ve already been rejected three times in one week, haha, but at least I don’t have regret for not trying!

Books I Received for Review:

Pale as a Ghost by Stephen Osborne | books, reading, book covers
Magic Fell by Andi Van | reading, books

Books I Finished:

Morning Glories Vol. 1 by Nick Spencer, Joe Eisma, & Rodin Esquejo | books, reading, book covers
The Other Side of Gravity by Shelly Crane | books, reading, book covers
The Labyrinthians by J.A. Armitage | books, reading, book covers

Morning Glories was funny, but that was pretty much the only thing I liked about it. I posted a mini review on GR if you want to see my thoughts. Unfortunately The Other Side of Gravity wasn’t for me either. At least I liked The Labyrinthians 🙂

Song of the Week:

“We Don’t Have to Dance” by Andy Black – I stumbled upon this randomly on YouTube, but… I think I’m in love, guys. With the song, the voice, and the guy 😉 I’ve been using listenonrepeat which keeps track of how times the video plays and… is it healthy to have listened to the same song over 250 times in four days?

In Case You Missed It:

– I asked you all how much science you like in your science fiction.
– I reviewed Chasing Sunrise by Lex Chase, a character driven, paranormal romance with a cross-dressing MC who breaks stereotypes.
– I reviewed Eerie by C.M. McCoy, a quirky YA paranormal romance.

The Sunday Post Link-Up:

Once again, I’m linking up to The Sunday Post at Caffeinated Book Reviewer 🙂

The Labyrinthians has an interesting title and cover.
While I do watch movie adaptions I get your feelings considering it. Especially when it concerns favorite books. Book to movie adaptions aren’t always the greatest.

    1. Kristen Burns

I seem to be drawn to things about labyrinths, so I agree!

It seems adaptations are rarely that great, but, in my case, it’s more that I just don’t want my image of the character ruined 🙁

  2. Lexxie @ (un)Conventional Bookviews

Congrats getting auto-approved for your fave publisher on Netgalley! I wish that would happen to me, too – and at the same time, it’s probably very good that it hasn’t happened yet 😀
I would be excited and want to share, too, and I don’t find that braggy in the least!
Your new books look great, and I hope you’ll enjoy them all, Kristen.
Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.

    1. Kristen Burns

Thank you! It’s a small publisher, so there won’t be a ton books, and I pretty much would’ve requested them all anyway lol. So I don’t have to worry about going overboard. And thank you, I was worried my excitement might come across wrong! Glad it didn’t 🙂

You have a great week too!

  3. Annika @ Hiding Books

I DID NOT REALISE YOU LOVED EMERY TOO! And by Emery I mean the Paper Magician…. I LOVE THAT TRILOGY! And I just heard the news about the Disney thing too! I share your fear for what is to come!

Doesn’t sound braggy at all! I’m so excited for you! Getting auto-approved is such an awesome feeling! And backlisted ebooks?! I want! Yay for going on a bender 😉

Also that song is LOVELY. I’m so on the allcaps today, sorry! A lot of excitement for one post/one comment! 😉

    1. Kristen Burns

I wouldn’t even be this upset about the movie if it weren’t for Emery. Like, of all the characters to ruin for me! Why did they have to pick one of my absolute top 3, possibly even my #1, favorites?!

Thanks, I was worried it might come across wrong. But seriously I’m not sure which I’m more excited about! I REALLY love binge reading, so the backlisted book thing is perfect for me!

I’m glad you like the song! Clearly I’m obsessed, so it’s nice to have someone else who thinks it’s a good song too lol. And my post was full of caps, so it’s only fair that you get to use caps too 😉

  4. Deborah

I’ve not used Edelweiss. I joined but haven’t done anything with it. It seemed complicated and I already receive quite a few books.

And no, you don’t sound braggy and it’s good to be excited. I’ve only got a couple of auto-approvals on NetGalley.

    1. Kristen Burns

It is stupidly complicated, but, now that I’ve spent more time on it, I think I actually understand how it works lol. I still use Netgalley more though.

This is my first auto-approval, and it’s not a big publisher, but it’s still my favorite. I imagine it probably feels good getting auto-approved every time it happens though!

  5. Samantha

GAH I have ARC envy this week! I am so jealous you got an auto approval! I think I might die if that ever happens to me! Congrats!!!!!

  6. Amber Elise @ Du Livre

I haven’t read Paper Magician….nor do I know anything about it. Disney is just grabbing rights to everything aren’t they!

Congrats in furthering your relationship with your favorite publisher! That’s always exciting!!

  7. Lola

It’s nice to have a week without any computer troubles or loud noises keeping you out of your sleep.

I feel your pain concerning movie adaptions! I haven’t read the paper magician, but I do avoid movie adaptions and it can be a pain to have to be careful about not running into an image of the movie you would rather avoid.

And that’s so exciting you got auto-approved. I am still hoping some of my fav publisher son netgalley will approve me, although it would probably bad for my percentage as well. I think I am auto approved for like 3 small publishers, but I hardly ever request any of their books, so I feel like I am not really profiting as much from that. That’s great you’re requesting some edelweiss books and like you said the worst thing that happens is that they say no.

I am looking forward to your review of The Labyrinthians, I like the cover for that one. Have a great week!

    1. Kristen Burns

Right? Finally a week without things going wrong.

Ugh, stupid movie adaptations. It wouldn’t even be as bad if it wasn’t this particular character!

Thanks! I mean, this one is a small publisher, but they’re still my favorite, and I pretty much do want all their books and would have requested them anyway, so this is definitely helpful. And if anything it’ll be good for my percentage since I know I’ll get them reviewed, and then maybe I’ll finally have enough books that my percentage won’t always be all over the place lol.

I should be posting my Labyrinthians review this week 🙂 You have a great week too!

  8. kimbacaffeinate

As long as I have read the book first I can handle the movie. Of course I am a critic throughout. My family once all turned to me during a film and said, “We know Mom the book was better.” Bwahaha. I try to mutter in my head now. Congrats on the auto-approval and back-listing..those are huge and as book addicts we totally understand!

    1. Kristen Burns

Hahaha they know you so well. That’s too funny.

Thanks 🙂 I’m so excited about the backlisted books! I seriously do miss binge reading. I’m glad you all understand my excitement!

  9. Maureen's Books (@MaureenHinten)

Your definitely not sounding braggy if you ask me.. Being grateful is awesome and free books makes everyone happy. At least that should be the case!! LOL!!
I’m sorry to say I haven’t read ‘The Paper Magician’.. But most times movie adaptions don’t really bother me. They are usually so different than the book that I just try to see them as another story.
Have a great week and happy reading! 😉

    1. Kristen Burns

Free books definitely should make everyone happy lol, I agree! But I was still worried how it might come off, so thanks 🙂

I know that movie adaptations are different things, so it’s not even that I mind the story being different, I just don’t want to lose my image of the character! I can’t keep that separate, no matter how much I try to think of them as different things :-/

You have a great week too!

  10. Kei @ The Lovely Pages Reviews

Congrats! I love Netgalley so much! I’ve used Edelweiss a few times, way too complicated for me to use frequently tbh. I’m the total opposite, I love movie adaptations, seeing my favorite characters on the big screen is priceless, even if they don’t get it right most of the time LOL

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! Edelweiss is stupidly complicated, but I think I’m getting the hang of it. I still prefer Netgalley, but sometimes Edelweiss has different books. You’re the opposite of me with movie adaptations though 😛

  11. Heather @ Random Redheaded Ramblings

Congrats on the auto-approve, it is the best feeling ever, like getting the keys to the bookstore! I read the Paper Magician a while back and have mixed feeling about Disney but the Jungle Book was amazing, they did a great job of it!

    Have a great week!

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! It was my first auto-approve, and it was definitely a great feeling lol.

I don’t even remember the original Jungle Book, but the new one looks incredible! The animals and everything looks amazing. I’m glad you liked it!

  12. Greg

The laptop saga continues? I’m not familiar with The Paper Magician but if it’s a favorite I can see not wanting that screwed up. 🙂 Even when they do a good job I always still want to stick with the image in my head, it’s like “my” version you know?

Morning Glories is weird. I’ve read farther and you never seem to get answers… so I’m not sure it gets any better. 🙂 And the art gets worse as it goes. The Labyrinthians on the other hand looks kinda good. The Gravity cover is interesting, too bad that didn’t work for ya more. I hate when a cover doesn’t deliver. 🙂

    1. Kristen Burns

The laptop saga is never going to end lol. I’ve stopped even bothering to track where it is or if it’s repaired or when it’s being sent back. But yeah, I REALLY don’t want to lost the image I have of this character especially 🙁

Amber @ Du Livre told me you never do get any answers. I had been considering continuing for the humor, but, after hearing that, I decided nope. That’s the worst. And I cant even imagine how difficult it would be if the characters started looking even *more* alike lol.

I feel like you might like Labyrinthians. I’ll probably post that review this week. But the Gravity cover definitely deceived me!

  13. AngelErin

I’ve never read The Paper Magician. Don’t let the movie ruin what’s in your head though. They can’t take that away from you hahahaha. 🙂

  14. Daniela Ark

I think it is awesome that you got pre-approved and ebooks backlisted. And that’s not bragging and that’s why we are here for you. TO BE HAPPY FOR YOU [I agree we are an AWESOME community 🙂 ] So Sunday Post gang… come on! Everybody 1…2…3 LINE HAPPY DANCE with Kristen 🙂
I LOVE when books are made into movies so it is harder for me to understand how you feel BUT I DON’T NEED to understand to be sorry that Disney is gonna ruin the Paper Magician for you. This book didn’t pass the first page test with me but I always wanted to give it another try.
I hope you get your laptop back soon.

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks 🙂 I wasn’t even sure if I was going to post it on here because I was worried it might come off wrong, but hahahaha I love your comment. *does line happy dance with you*

I know I’m in the minority about the movie thing. But that doesn’t stop me from being upset! Thank you for being sorry even if you don’t understand! I mean, I liked the books, but I don’t know if they’re quite your kind of books? But for me the problem was that they went downhill a bit after the first one. Except Emery simply being in the books kept me happy lol.

Thanks, I’ve stopped even bothering to track where it is whatever because I’m so tired of all this laptop crap -_-

  15. Cait @ Paper Fury

Omgg congrats on the auto-approval!! THAT IS AMAZING. GO YOU!! (I’m still trying to figure out how to get those. ?) And it isn’t bragging at all, pfft, you have every right to be excited. ;D
And I totally understand about the movie-adaption thing. I’m absolutely terrified because apparently The Scorpio Races is in works to be a movie and that book got me started on YA and is just fajkdslad it’s just so precious and I do NOT want a movie. *cries*

    1. Kristen Burns

Thank you!!! I feel like you must have like a million already though? Lol. It was a small publisher, not one of the ginormously famous ones, but still my favorite 🙂

Yay, someone understands! And I can definitely see why you’re so terrified. In this case, for me, it’s more about that one character than anything. Like, I can avoid the plot stuff, like the way the magic looks, by not watching, but it’s so hard to avoid seeing characters!

    1. Kristen Burns

      Thank you!

It’s not quite Harry Potter, so it’s understandable if you haven’t heard of it 😛 But yeah, I definitely won’t be watching the movie!
