Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Book Quotes About Love and Cats

So this week's Top Ten is all about Valentine's Day---OTPs, love declarations, swoon-worthy quotes, Valentine's Day reads, etc. I was going to go with swoon-worthy quotes, but they proved to be a lot harder to find than I thought they would be.

But then I came across some cat quotes and decided an anti-Valentine's Day post would be fun... except I had a bit of a shortage of cat quotes too.

So, being the genius I am, I decided to use them both and combine them into one post that would have something for everyone :-)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at The Broke and the Bookish. This week is all about Valentine’s Day, so my two part topic is:

Top Five Quotes About Love

The Faerie Prince by Rachel Morgan | books, reading, book covers
Bleeding Heart by Melissa Graves | books, reading, book covers
The Usual Apocalypse by Christine Price | books, reading, book covers
Steal the Light by Lexi Blake | books, reading, book covers
Changeling by Amanda Meuwissen | books, reading, book covers

5. On Rocky Beginnings

Because it’s not always love at first sight. *Possible Spoiler Alert*

“You think I’m going to hurt you? You think I’m going to get bored and run off with some Undergrounder the first chance I get? You obviously have no idea how amazing you are. You, Violet Fairdale, are incredible, and I want you. Every part of you. I want your stubbornness and your sarcasm and your competitive spirit. I want you challenging me and fighting beside me. I want to hold you and kiss you and so much more because there’s no one else in the world who knows me like you do. You have always been the one for me, even when we couldn’t stand each other.”

-Rachel Morgan, The Faerie Prince

4. On Appreciating Who a Person Is

Because it’s nice to know you’re appreciated for the things that make you you.

“I love how strong and determined you are. I love that you feel so much. I love that things are sacred to you; you don’t compromise. You’re a fighter. And despite everything you’ve been through you’re here, right now, sharing your life with me, and making me feel like the luckiest guy in the world.”

-Melissa Graves, Bleeding Heart

3. On Realistic Expectations

Because in real life, relationships are not perfect, and I like when books recognize that.

“You love this… idea of me. But it’s not me. I’m always going to be the guy who puts in the overtime. I’m going to keep spending my nights on the couch in my office, and it’s going to be even worse now that I’ll be breaking in a new assistant. I can’t be the man you deserve.”

“I don’t want the man I deserve. I want you. And nothing you say is going to change my mind about that.” Brennan climbed up and closed the distance to Matt in a single stride. He cupped Matt’s face in warm hands. “I love you, Matthew Whitman. Late nights and overtime and all. It’s not perfect. But nothing ever is. And maybe, someday, what we have will be enough to bring you home at night. I’m willing to wait until that happens, as long as I get to wait with you.”

-The Usual Apocalypse, Christine Price

2. On Loving Someone, Flaws and All

Men aren’t the only characters who can give quote-worthy love speeches.

“You might have forgotten, but I remember who you were. Who you still are. You were a manipulative bastard with a secret desire for world domination and a little bit of a god complex. You controlled it then, you control it now, and I love you for it. This part of your personality has nothing to do with being a vampire and everything to do with being Daniel Donovan. Don’t think you can scare me with the big bad wolf routine. If you want me out of your life, you only have to ask, but don’t think you can get me to tell you I’m afraid of you.”

-Lexi Blake, Steal the Light

Somebody give this couple an award because seriously, they’re just so perfect together.

“You don’t look beautiful, Zoey. You are beautiful.”

-Lexi Blake, Steal the Light

1. On Relationship Perfection

This relationship has ruined me for all future relationships because it’s so damn adorable and swoon-worthy and perfect <3

“You,” Nathan breathed softly into the crook of Sasha’s neck. “Just you. It was always… going to be you. Someone who can… fight with me. Know me. Know this life. And still joke… and laugh… and fuck all night long when we want to. It had to be… you… to get me to feel this way. And no one, no one, is ever going to tell me that’s wrong.” Nathan leaned forward and kissed just below Sasha’s ear. “I love you.”

-Amanda Meuwissen, Changeling

Top Five Quotes About Cats

Changeling by Amanda Meuwissen | books, reading, book covers
Bleeding Heart by Melissa Graves | books, reading, book covers
Cold Feet by Jay Northcote | books, reading, book covers
Steal the Moon by Lexi Blake | books, reading, book covers
Wings of Darkness by Sherri A. Wingler | books, reading, book covers

5. The Adorableness of Cats

Because awwwww, we could all use a little fuzz ball curled up on our stomachs (whether it’s a normal cat or a part-cat chimera).

“Hey, fuzz ball. Come to wake me up, or just looking for a human pillow?”

A chirp responded and Wally started kneading Nathan’s stomach like a cat.

“Guess that answers that,” Nathan smiled.

-Amanda Meuwissen, Changeling

4. The Worst Meet-Cute for a Cat Lover

It may have worked for this woman, but I wouldn’t suggest this method.

“She stayed up with me and that cat all night,” Michael says.

“He didn’t make it,” she says, frowning.

“Yeah. He was a tough little bugger, like his dad, but— there was nothing she could do.”

“Oh,” Kyle sighs, chin on his hands, his eyes wide. “Poor little guy.”

“So there I am in my sweats, grief-stricken; I mean this was a moment, and—”

“I asked him out, like a total creeper,” Jenn announces proudly.

“It was kind of creepy. ‘Sorry about your cat, cuppa coffee?’”

-Melissa Graves, Bleeding Heart

3. How to Be a Crazy Cat Lady

This is an example of the right way to be a crazy cat lady.

A glance around the living room revealed a furry occupant on almost every available surface. Two shared space on the sofa while another sat on a rocking chair. A tortoiseshell had an armchair to itself, a Siamese perched sphinx-like on one of the chairs by the dining table, and a giant ginger tom stretched out on the rug in front of the fire.

[. . .] Yet another cat—a black-and-white one—sat on the kitchen surface eyeing them suspiciously as they entered.

-Jay Northcote, Cold Feet

2. How NOT to Be a Crazy Cat Lady

This is an example of the wrong way to be a crazy lady.

“You are not enjoying your cat?” Declan asked, his voice not unkind.

“It’s great. I’m just worried about going home. What the hell do you mean cat?” I sat straight up and looked down at my beef soft taco with sour cream and guacamole.

Lee took a big bite of his fourth taco. Werewolves can really pack it away. “It’s definitely cat. You were right about this place. This is some damn fine cat. I’ll have to bring Zack here.”

-Lexi Blake, Steal the Moon

Later that day…

“Please tell me that’s chicken and not cat.”

Angelina shook her dark hair. “No, honey. If you want good cat, there are some vendors on Good Latimer who make great tacos.”

Everybody knew that but me. I really needed to start getting those memos.

-Lexi Blake, Steal the Moon

1. The Angel of Death on Cats

Because quotes about cats are made infinitely better when it’s the Angel of Death thinking them.

I had been brooding quietly to myself, propped up on the bed against Isabel’s headboard. The damned cat refused to move and somehow managed to take up over half the bed by itself. She was a small cat, but what she lacked in size, she more than made up for in attitude.

-Sherri A. Wingler, Wings of Darkness

And they’re better still when he’s speaking them.

“Cats hate me, you know. It is unfortunate. I adore watching them. They are so full of their own self-importance. Always judging their people and other animals by their own ridiculous standards. I find them delightful.”

-Sherri A. Wingler, Wings of Shadow

  1. Anissa @ She Reads Too Much

Okay this is literally one of the best Top 10 Tuesday’s I have ever read hahaha. I love this combination! I especially loved the last cat quote. I definitely have some quotes on cats stored somewhere but I can’t remember where I wrote them down xD As for super swoon worthy.. I definitely have some of those lying around somewhere! I will try to dig them up somehow. 😀 Loved this! <3

    1. Kristen Burns

Hehe I’m glad you like my idea. I know I’ve read a million swoon-worthy quotes, I just couldn’t find the damn things! But I had fun including the cat ones, so it worked out fine lol. I love the last one too! Thanks 😀

  2. Greg

Cat quotes- nice idea. And cats go so well with PN I’m surprised there aren’t more. 🙂 I especially like the cat lady one from Cold Feet- I’m curious now as to why there are so many cats. The Lexi Blake quotes aren’t bad either.

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! I can totally see now how the Cold Feet quote could be some sinister, paranormal thing involving all the creepy cats… except it’s actually one of the few contemporaries I’ve read recently lol. So they’re just at some lady’s house who has lots of cats, nothing sinister. But I do love the Lexi Blake ones, so I’m glad you like those 🙂

  3. Giselle

Those love quotes are for sure swoon worthy! I really want to read Changling now, I haven’t read it yet. That quote was just so amazing! Also those cat quotes made my day.

  4. Bookworm Brandee

You’ve added a few books to my tbr, Kristen. But I was thrilled when I found that I already own Steal the Light!! *squee* I loved all the quotes. All. Of. Them. But my favorite cat quote is that last one about cats judging people and animals by their own ridiculous standards. I think my cats probably do that. 😉 Thanks for sharing a little something for everyone!

Yay! A prime example of why downloading books while they’re free pays off! You never know when someone might recommend it later on 😛 You should so read it! And I’m glad you loved my quotes 😀 That one was also my favorite. I love cats lol.
