Bookish Tag Post: You’re Not Good Enough Tag

This sounds like it’s going to be a really sad or mean kinda tag, right? But don’t you fret, it’s actually really fun.

The way it works is, you take 30 characters from books you’ve read, you choose two to use for each question, then you decide which is the better of the two for the answer.

I tried to keep this as random as possible, so I chose the books mostly randomly by using my Goodreads shelf (plus a few I thought would be interesting), I chose an even number of guys and girls, then I used a random selection generator to choose the characters for each question.

I found this over at Birdie Bookworm, and the original is from ReadLikeWildfire and BeccaTheBookReviewer.

And now, let’s get on with it!

1. You only have one more spot on your Spelling Bee team, who would you pick to complete your team?

Marcus (Addict) vs. Grateful (Mother May I)

Addict by Lexi Blake
Mother May I by Genevieve Jack

Why? Why of all the questions would Marcus be wasted on this? *sigh* Anyway, both of these characters are very intelligent, but I feel like Marcus would probably be better at spelling since he’s been alive for like 2000 years and speaks multiple languages and everything.

2. Both characters want to kill you, which one would you kill first so you have a better chance of surviving?

Violet (The Faerie War) vs. Suzie (Sex Criminals Vol. 1)

The Faerie War by Rachel Morgan
Sex Criminals Vol. 1 by Matt Fraction & Chip Zdarsky

Violet is a trained fighter with weapons and everything, so she could kick my ass in five seconds if she wanted to, which makes her seem the more dangerous one. BUT, if it took me too long to kill Violet, during that time Suzie could just get off and go to the “Quiet” where she could slaughter me while I’m helplessly frozen in time. So, strategically speaking, I think it’d be best to kill Suzie first so she couldn’t use that power against me.

3. You’re on the bachelor/bachelorette and you’re down to these two characters, which one are you going to give your rose too?

Lesto (The Pirate of Fathoms Deep) vs. Marko (Saga Vol. 2)

The Pirate of Fathoms Deep by Megan Derr
Saga Vol. 2 by Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples

Well, if I recall correctly, Lesto is gay. So I don’t think that’d be a very satisfying relationship for either of us. No worries though, I think I could be happy with Marko 😉 (Even though I’d kind of rather have Sir Robot IV since I kind of love him for some unexplainable reason.)

4. You’ve been chosen for the Hunger Games, who would most likely volunteer in your place?

Piper (Chase the Dark) vs. Cal (Wraith Hunter)

Chase the Dark by Annette Marie
Wraith Hunter by Clara Coulson

Both characters are the type who would probably volunteer for someone they care about. But Cal is probably the more likely one to volunteer for a stranger, I think. His whole job involves putting himself at risk fighting monsters for the sake of strangers.

5. You’re stranded on an island. Which character would you sacrifice to engage in cannibalism?

Luc (Triad Blood) vs. Michael (The Ghost Chronicles)

Triad Blood by 'Nathan Burgoine
The Ghost Chronicles by Marlo Berliner | reading, books

Michael is a ghost, so we’re going to have to assume he’s got a physical body for this question. And I’d eat Michael, for multiple reasons. 1) I just didn’t like him that much. (Wow, that was harsh lol. He wasn’t actually that bad.) 2) Luc is a vampire and therefore probably not very good eats. 3) Because Luc is a vampire, he could protect me easily from any animals, at least at night. 4) If there are any animals, he could probably catch and kill them, and I wouldn’t even have to share the food. Now I know what you’re thinking: the whole reason I wouldn’t have to share is because he drinks blood, and I would be the only human around to be his food. But maybe he could drink animal blood? And if not, well, let’s be honest… 5) I’d much rather have death by sexy vampire than by starvation/dehydration/infection/animal attack.

6. You’re the next DC/Marvel superhero (with your own tv show of course), who is your sidekick?

Laurent (Kings Rising) vs. Dorian (The Picture of Dorian Gray)

Kings Rising by C. S. Pacat
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

Ummm… neither? I mean, I don’t think Laurent would ever be anyone’s sidekick. He’s a king for goodness sake, and he could outwit me, out-sword me, out-everything me in his sleep. And Dorian was just an abhorrent person and not someone I want to associate with. But if it’s just my choice as to who I want for my sidekick? Definitely Laurent.

7. You’re a manager of an Avocado admiring company, who would you fire for lack of communication skills?

Calla (Nocte) vs. The Little Mermaid (Drown)

Nocte by Courtney Cole | reading, books
Drown by Esther Dalseno

Well, seeing as the mermaid has no tongue and therefore cannot talk and I think also doesn’t know how to write… I’d have to say she’d be the one fired.

8. You’ve just finished a book in which your favorite character dies, which character is most likely to comfort you?

Gwen (iZombie Vol. 4) vs. Hans (A Frozen Heart)

iZombie Vol. 4: Repossessed by Chris Roberson & Michael Allred
A Frozen Heart by Elizabeth Rudnick

Well… probably not Hans lol. (This is Hans from Frozen that we’re talking about here.) Although, actually in my headcanon he’s not quite as lacking in compassion as he’s portrayed to be in the book. But still, it’d probably be Gwen. She seems like a nice person.

9. Ugh, it’s high school. Who would most likely be part of the popular clique?

Zoraida (Zoraida Grey and the Family Stones) vs. Syl (Artificial)

Zoraida Grey and the Family Stones by Sorchia DuBois | reading, books
Artificial by Jadah McCoy

I feel like both of these characters were kind of outsiders. But Syl lives in a future world where she’s spent her life hiding and battling giant bug-human hybrid things, so I just can’t see her in the popular clique in high school. So I’m choosing Zoraida.

10. The day has arrived; you’re finally a year older! Who would have the nerve to forget your birthday?

Lupin (HP & the Order of the Phoenix) vs. Doran (Starflight)

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling
Starflight by Melissa Landers

Well are we talking Doran from the beginning of the book, or the end? Because Doran from the beginning would be most likely to forget. But, although Lupin is a good guy, he might forget just because he’s always got a lot to deal with and is distracted by all that. So he’s probably more likely to forget vs. Doran from the end of the book.

11. You’ve just found an upcoming booktube star? Who would most likely be?

Matheus (Real Vampires Don’t Sparkle) vs. Tris (Allegiant)

Real Vampires Don't Sparkle by Amy Fecteau
Allegiant by Veronica Roth

It would totally be Matheus. Or at least, I’d want it to be Matheus. He’s very quippy and sarcastic and always making jokes, at least in his mind. He’s also just kind of loud and speaks his mind sometimes even when he probably shouldn’t.

12. Sleepover time! Unfortunately you can only invite one person, who would you invite?

Nya (The Shifter) vs. Lestat (Interview with the Vampire)

The Shifter by Janice Hardy
Interview With the Vampire by Anne Rice

I think the real question here is, could I survive a sleepover with Lestat? He’s the type of vampire you can never be 100% sure won’t suddenly decide to drain you. But, although I have nothing against Nya, a sleepover him would be infinitely more interesting than a sleepover with her, and I just cannot pass that up. I’m going with Lestat.

13. Bam, you’re pregnant. Who’s the father/mother?

Captain Hook (Peter and Wendy) vs. Asher (Wings of Darkness)

Peter and Wendy by J.M. Barrie
Wings of Darkness by Sherri A. Wingler

This is a surprisingly difficult question. Assuming Asher can even had kids (since he’s the Angel of Death)… On the one hand, Hook is one of my favorite characters, and I feel like he’s not all bad. But on the other hand, he’s still kind of awful, and do I really want him to the father of my child? Asher would make a much better partner and father, I think, so I’ll choose him.

14. You’ve just written a super important text. Who would ‘see’ it, but not reply?

Eve (The Human) vs. Meg (Nightingale Girl)

The Human by Keary Taylor
Nightingale Girl by M. R. Pritchard

Honestly, probably both of them lol. They’re both great characters. Meg is one of my favorites, but Eve can be distant, and Meg can be unreliable.

15. You’ve just woken up and it’s time for breakfast. Your mum’s been replaced by… who?!

Bryn (The Girl in Between) vs. Jehenne (The Key to Erebus)

The Girl in Between by Laekan Zea Kemp
The Key to Erebus by Emma V. Leech

Well, they’re both younger than me, so that would be a bit awkward. Assuming this is older versions of them though… I’m going with Jehenne because she’s a witch and seriously how cool would it be to have a mom with magic???

Talk to me!

Do you agree or disagree with my choices?
What character do you think should have a YouTube channel?

Question 6 made me laugh, because they’d both be awful hahaha (I do love Laurent though *shrugs*)

This was a totally fun tag, I enjoyed reading 🙂

  2. Lola

This was so fun to read, even tough I only knew a few of the characters you listed, it’s interesting to read your reasoning why you would pick one or another. Like how you end doing a sleepover with Lestat because that would be more interesting. Doran from the start of Starlight would totally forget your birthday, but Doran at the end not. Kinda interesting how for that question it really matters at which point of the book the character would be. And a 2000 old character does seem like a good fit to help with a spelling bee contest. I remember how much you liked Sir Robot, what a shame you dind’t pick his character from that book.

if I could pick a character as my mom, I would probably go for the female character from Shifter Mate Magic, Jackie. I mean she basically goes on the run to make sure her kid doesn’t get sold to the highest bidder. She seems pretty protective and also realistic and caring. Oh and she has some magic too, which would be cool.

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! I always try to give explanations so that people who haven’t read the same books will still be able to enjoy my posts 🙂 It really shows Doran’s character growth when the answer is so different depending on beginning or end of book! Lol I figured I always pick Sir Robot and wanted to switch it up. Didn’t know Saga would get chosen for that question!

She does sound like an amazing mom! And magic, definitely cool 😀

    1. Kristen Burns

Right? It’s not that I don’t want him as my sidekick, it’s that he would just never, haha. Yay, a fellow Sir Robot IV fan! He’s had so much growth and has, in turn, grown on me too. And it’s definitely been interesting seeing his relationship with that family.

  3. Lilyn G

This was a really fun tag to read! Definitely not what I thought it was going to be. I agree about the Sir Robot guy in Saga …definitely strangely interesting. Marco’s a good guy, but.. not interesting.

    1. Kristen Burns

YES! Exactly. Marko is *good*, and if I were actually going to date someone from the series, it’d prob be him. But Sir Robot is the most interesting one to me and who’s had the most positive character growth.

  4. Greg

These are fun! Violet/ Suzie does sound like a tough choice, but this Quiet business sounds nasty so yeah… good call. 🙂 And your reasons for #5 seem reasonable. #7 always cracks me up because… an avocado company?

Yes early Doran would TOTALLY forget, and then bitch about if you reminded him. 🙂 Thank goodness he had character growth! Good luck with Lestat- I think you’re brave? What are your odds, about 50%? Wear lots of garlic…

A witch mom WOULD be cool…

    1. Kristen Burns

Suzie’s not a violent person by nature, but if we were literally fighting to the death, then yeah, I imagine she’s gonna use her ability to essentially stop time to her advantage! Right? I really reasoned out #5. All so I could choose the vampire, haha. Seriously, avocado company was so random!

Lol early Doran was a jerk. 50% is prob about right 😛 No, to be fair, Lestat *usually* doesn’t kill innocents. I may not like him much as a person, but I will give him credit for how he does generally stick to criminals when feeding.

  5. Karen

I was surprised you didn’t pick Sir Robot IV!

And I don’t know – I think Laurent is a good choice. He was a good strategist and partner even if you didn’t always know that was his plan. I guess if you don’t mind be left int he dark at times lol

Karen @ For What It’s Worth

    1. Kristen Burns

I thought I’d switch it up this time, haha. How was I to know I could’ve ended up dating him?! 😛

Oh, I like Laurent too and think he’d be super useful! I just don’t think he’d ever be willing to be anyone sidekick lol.

  6. Jenn @ Bound to Writing

This looks like such a fun tag! I loved your answers, although I’ve only read one book on your list (Allegiant). I’m definitely going to do this steal this one to do when I need a tag! 🙂

  7. ShootingStarsMag

What a fun tag! I keep saying I need to create my own, but people have already done so many of these ideas. LOL I like your answers, though I’ll be honest – I haven’t read most of these books. But yeah, Lupin would probably forget my birthday because he’s a bit preoccupied most of the time.

    -Lauren

  8. Sam @ Spines in a Line

That’s too funny cuz it definitely sounded like this would be a mean tag at first! I can’t say I know any of the characters here except for Lupin (and those seem like some pretty solid arguments there) but still fun to read! And I agree, it’d be kind of awkward to have a mom that’s younger than you but magic could definitely come in handy

  9. Wren

I can’t really say anything about your choices here because I don’t think I’ve read any of these books. But I would love a YouTube channel by Valkyrie Cain from Skulduggery Pleasant, detailing all her fights and adventures. Who would I want for my mom? I honestly have no idea. But if having a vampire mom would make me a vampire, then any vampire 🙂

    1. Kristen Burns

A YouTube channel about someone’s crazy fights and adventures sounds awesome! I like the way you think. A vampire mom, in order be a vampire yourself, is a genius idea 😉

  10. Danya @ Fine Print

This is the BEST TAG EVER! Seriously, I laughed aloud at all your answers and I haven’t even read most of these books! I would happily marry Marko from Saga, but I’m concerned his other wife would cut my head off. And there’s no way in hell I’d go to a sleepover with Lestat…I’d be dinner for sure! 🤣

    1. Kristen Burns

Yay, glad you liked my answers! Seriously, Marko is a great guy. I could totally happy in a marriage with him, I think. Although I hadn’t thought about Alana. She’d definitely cut our heads off. Lol to be fair to Lestat though, I don’t love him as a person, but he rarely harms innocent humans since he prefers to feed from criminals. So, there is a risk, but we’d *probably* survive a sleepover with him 😛

  11. Sam@WLABB

The questions on this tag are very amusing. The whole baby daddy one would be difficult if you read a lot of paranormal type books. Great answers though.
