Game Review: Card Cowboy by Luckshot Games

Card Cowboy is a simple, funny, cute deck-building game set in the Old West. Collect, play, and combine cards with hilarious outcomes as you try to survive outrageous situations and get revenge on the man who killed your dad.

Official Description:

Card Cowboy is a silly adventure about getting Revenge against the guy that killed your dad, wooed your mom, and kicked your dog. You’ll meet babies, bandits, drunks, and romantic interests then use the cards you’re dealt to make your way through The Wild West.

Long Review:

This game is so much fun! The gameplay is so simple, it’s literally just collecting cards and then choosing which one(s) to play in different scenarios, but it’s so funny and well done. First thing I did was make my horse drunk. Sometimes I’d choose a card thinking it would cause one thing to happen, and instead I’d end up accidentally killing someone. At one point, I was lugging around a dead horse for almost an entire game because I kept trying so hard to offload it, and it kept not working because the game treats any card with the word “horse” in it as a normal horse, so I was making great escapes and giving people rides on my dead horse, which just made it even funnier.

There is a goal, a way to win, but it’s just as fun to lose. You’re going to want to play multiple times anyway to see more outrageous events and card outcomes.

Screenshot from Card Cowboy of the fortune teller event where I am combining the card 'horse' and the card 'whiskey' to get the card 'drunk horse.' Text says, 'You gave your horse some whiskey. Why would you do that?' There's a little 3D image of a covered wagon with a glowing crystal ball.

It has a cute little art style. I love how everything in the game looks, from the cards to the map to the little 3D art for each event. I also love how you can see your little party trailing along behind you as you walk from place to place on the map, and it even changes to match whether you have a horse or not.

There’s a “name your own price” version of this on itch.io and a $2.99 version on Steam that has some extra events, a card tracker, and voiceover. Having played both, I can say I like having a few extra events and a card tracker, and the game is worth paying for. I got about 4 hours of fun out of it.

An incredibly fun, quick, silly game!

Screenshot from Card Cowboy showing the 3D map with little trails between the barns, saloons, caravans, and other places you can choose to go. My blocky 3D character is riding a horse, behind them is a dead horse on the ground and another person.

Short Review:

– Collecting and choosing cards with hilarious outcomes
– Cute art style
– Can get your horse drunk
– Simple but incredibly fun!

Accessibility:

(May not include everything)
– Text in events is read aloud with voice acting. Not accessible for blind players or screen reader users though, as you must be able to see the screen for everything else.

You know I’m not really a Western fan but sometimes these Western game or story get my attention. This almost sounds like a Choose Your Own Adventure- I know it’s not because it’s cards, but just the way crazy things can happen! I would totally get my horse drunk 🙂
