Update: Life and Books (Apr 2025)

I’m a little late getting this posted because I kept putting it off and off and then got distracted today. But it’s here now!

No improvements to my personal life, but I have a few other things I can talk about.

I’ve tried listening to numerous fantasy RPG podcasts but, aside from Dungeons & Daddies, they never end up keeping my attention. I think I finally found another one though! It’s called Burnt Cookbook Party. I struggled for the first few episodes, but then things started getting chaotic, and I got hooked, and now I’m on Episode 20-something.

Monster Con came out! They’ve got a whole series of games now, but this is the one where my favorite Monster Prom character, Liam, is back as a main character again, so I’ve been looking forward to it. I’ll be honest, when they initially announced this would come out in 2025, I didn’t know if I’d even be well enough to play at this point. I don’t think I’ll be able to play a ton because it is hard on my head, but I’m glad I can at least play it some!

Monster Con screenshot of Liam, Nico, and April. Liam is saying, 'Alright, this is the 15-minute one-take where the main character eats a raw potato.'

I’ve also been really enjoying Cats and Soup. I’ve talked about it before. It’s just a little idler app, but they constantly have little events and you get new outfits for your cats, furniture for their rooms, etc. It’s just a cute, fun thing to look forward to and bring me a little joy each day. Here are some of my cats and their rooms!

Cute illustrated style game with a grey cat wearing a yellow dress and a hat that looks like a large sunflower. There's a tiny bunny next to them with a broccoli tail. The room has a window and a green carpet and green wallpaper and a pantry with cups and plates, and there are plants hanging on the walls.Cute illustrated style game with a calico cat in a room with wood panel floor and brick walls with two big windows with green curtains. There's a shelf with books and potions, a table with an hourglass, some papers on the floor, a book on a little table. There's a book floating around the cat and a little sentient ink bottle on the floor.

Blog/Bookish Updates:

Nothing this month.

Books I Received for Review:

When the Tides Held the Moon by Venessa Vida KelleyThe Sun Blessed Prince by Lindsey Byrd

When the Tides Held the Moon by Venessa Vida Kelley and The Sun Blessed Prince by Lindsey Byrd are from May’s Libro.fm ALC selection, but might as well share them in my April post since I already have them and am excited about them! Seriously, I downloaded these so fast. Both queer, one historical fantasy about a merman, the other high fantasy about a guy who can’t be killed and another who can kill with a touch.

And here’s the beautiful copy of Love at Second Sight by F.T. Lukens that I got from Simon & Schuster! I’ve already reviewed it, you can find that here if you’re interested.

Photo of Love at Second Sight by FT Lukens. Cover art is two teen boys in a high school hallway standing next to hot pink lockers with ectoplasm leaking out of one and a sticker of a vampire on another. Cam has his arm around Mateo's shoulder and is leaning in to whisper something.Photo of Love at Second Sight by FT Lukens back cover. A venus fly trap plant is climbing up some lockers, and drawn onto other lockers is a glowing ritual circle sigil thing.

Books I Finished:

Love at Second Sight by F.T. LukensShoestring Theory by Marina CostaDon't Sleep With the Dead by Nghi VoThe Prince's Heart by Ben ChalfinGo Luck Yourself by Sara Raasch

If you’re considering buying any of these books from Amazon, I’d really appreciate if you’d use my affiliate link!

Love at Second Sight by F.T. Lukens – Queer YA about a human who gets psychic powers and tries to solve a murder with supernatural friends. A lot of fun with adorable friendship!

Shoestring Theory by Mariana Costa – M/M fantasy sorta romance with time travel. The relationship didn’t go that deep, but it was a fun romp.

Don’t Sleep With the Dead by Nghi Vo – I didn’t love this (probably 3 stars), I don’t know if I understood everything, but I really did like how strange and unique it was. Queer, Gatsby-inspired, with demons and ghosts and paper people.

The Prince’s Heart by Ben Chalfin – Non-magical fantasy… romance, I guess? I got increasingly more frustrated as this book went on to the point that I almost sided with the villain because at least he was slightly more competent, and the romance lacked depth. The writing itself was ok though, I think. The story just needed more work.

Go Luck Yourself by Sara Raasch – This was great! Enemies to lovers romance between a Christmas prince and the prince of St. Patrick’s Day with lovable characters.

Monster Prom always looks like a lot of fun (who’s the dude sprouting teeth and wearing a trunk? 😂), and Cat and Soup has a nice relaxing vibe!

I love how consistent S&S is in sending you books.

They’re a mimic! Which I know about because of BG3 lol. It’s a monster that looks like a treasure chest, but then you get close, and surprise! Giant mouth. But this character is a sweetheart who just likes doing cosplay.

That’s awesome you found a new RPG podcast to listen to. And that new Monster game sounds fun, I haven’t played any of them, but maybe I’ll pick one up when it’s discounted next time. That Cat and Soup idler game looks cute! And those two books you received for review both sound promising, I look forward to hearing your thoughts about them. I hope I can listen to Love at Second Sight soon as I got the audio that released last week.

No worries – I haven’t been doing much blog-hopping either.

‘Hope things are ok with you’ — erm, not so much. My mother passed away in February, and things have been pretty rough.
