Mini Reviews: Fred, the Vampire Accountant (Books 6-9) by Drew Hayes

Fred is a sweater vest-wearing vampire with a passion for accounting who often finds himself in far more dangerous, troubling, and exciting situations than he ever meant to. But throughout his years of undead life, he’s found and nurtured a wonderful group of para-human friends, and in these final four books, there are battles, potion incidents, a wedding, weird competitions, ocean-dwelling vampires, and other misadventures.

I stopped doing mini review posts a while ago, so I never posted my reviews for some of the previous books in this series here (I just posted them on Goodreads and Amazon). But the series has finished, and I’ve decided to just put my reviews for Books 6-9 in the Fred series in one post! It’s not perfectly formatted, but it gets the job done 😅

Review:
I love Fred. I love how refreshing he is as an urban fantasy protagonist. He’s just so nice and good. He’s accepting and nonjudgmental and gives people a chance. He’s supportive of his friends. He prefers to avoid conflict and risk, but he’ll jump into it without hesitation when it’s for Krystal or his friends. He’s a little awkward and anxious. He’s certainly not suave. He’s occasionally badass, in his own way, and sometimes that way is being really good at accounting. So Fred is great, and I always get excited when there’s a new audiobook in the series.

This one added a couple great new characters to Fred’s crew, each of whom is also a new type of supernatural. But this one also had all the old characters because… it’s Fred and Krystal’s wedding! I also liked that most of the episodes in this one (these books are episodic, always consisting of five separate but connected stories) involved Fred and friends working together, since those are my favorites.

The audiobook, narrated by Kirby Heyborne, was also great, yet again. He’s great at doing different voices for different characters and bringing the story to life in a natural but engaging way.

Overall, this was a cute one in the series, though all the Fred books are fun and make me smile.

Review:
Another enjoyable book in the Fred series. I’ve grown familiar with these characters, and the stories are never too intense, so they’re just very chill to listen to.

Also, Fred is normally so quiet and nonconfrontational and, well, not badass, that whenever he does do something badass, it somehow seems even cooler.

I liked that Fred’s friends were in most of these stories. I especially enjoyed seeing them all be badass together.

Kirby Heyborne’s narration for the audiobook was wonderful, yet again. He does so many different voices and brings everyone to life, especially Fred, so well.

Anyway, a fun, chill book!

Posthumous Education by Drew HayesTitle: Posthumous Education

Review:
I just realized, I’m often ready for a series to end around Book 5 if there doesn’t seem to be any real end goal in sight, but this is Book 8, and I’m still happy to keep reading about Fred and friends. Fred is great, I love him! And I’m glad some of his friends still managed to make an appearance in this one, despite it being set away from home at a parahuman university, since I love his friends too. These are such chill books, despite the danger Fred often finds himself in, and I feel like I always know what to expect, which makes them comfortable.

And as usual, it was made all the better by Kirby Heyborne’s wonderful narration that includes so many different voices and brings the entire cast of characters, especially Fred, to life in a perfect way.

Another great book!

Review:
There’s not a lot to say when you get to the ninth book in a series, especially a series that has been so consistent, but I wanted to post a review because I’ve reviewed all the other books, and I’ve enjoyed the whole series. For me, at least, it wasn’t a can’t-stop-listening, hard-hitting sort of series, but it was solid. I always looked forward to the next book because I knew it would be a chill, entertaining, heartwarming, enjoyable time. And it always was! Even when there was magic and danger and violence and high stakes, the story was written and told and narrated in such a way that it still felt gentle.

As I’ve said before, I highly recommend the unabridged audiobooks narrated by Kirby Heyborne. He brings the character to life so perfectly, brings all the characters to life, and makes the books so calming and easy to listen to. (There are also some full cast dramatized adaptation versions, I have no idea what those are like.)

Anyway, Fred and his found family are a lovable bunch. Their adventures are sometimes wacky, sometimes touching, sometimes dangerous, often all three. And this was a heartwarming happy ending!

Recommended For:

Fans of previous books in the Fred, The Vampire Accountant series by Drew Hayes. Anyone who likes character growth, found family, characters who are quirky and good, lots of supernaturals, urban/paranormal fantasy that’s slower paced and not too stressful, and a vampire who isn’t your typical kind of vampire.
