I mentioned recently that the lovely people at HarperVoyager invited me to be a fan ambassador for S.A. Chakraborty’s Daevabad series, so I received some copies of The City of Brass to give out. And I want to give some of those copies to you all!
The City of Brass is a fantastic book about djinn, and you can read my full review here if you want, but I thought I’d give you all a summarized version in case you aren’t convinced yet. Then be sure to scroll to the end of the post to find out how to enter the giveaways!
My Favorite Things about The City of Brass
The Djinn
Djinn are fascinating creatures from Arabian and Islamic mythology, and this author’s portrayal of them is so detailed and interesting. These beings are supernatural and have their very own hidden city, and yet, in many ways, they’re still so similar to humans.
“We’re souled beings like humans, but we were created from fire, not earth.” A delicate tendril of orange flame snaked around his right hand and twisted through his fingers.
The Characters
They’re all complex and flawed, and I found myself rooting for them despite their mistakes.
“Someone steals from me, I steal from others, and I’m sure the people I stole from will eventually take something that doesn’t belong to them. It’s a circle,” she added wisely, as she gnawed on the chewy bread.
Dara stared at her for a good few heartbeats before speaking. “There is something very wrong with you.”
The Gray Areas
Nothing was a black-and-white with a simple solution, and that made the whole thing even more realistic.
He did this to himself. Nahri knew that. But her mind flashed back to their journey, to the sorrow that constantly haunted him, his anguish when he talked about his family’s fate, the bloody memories of his time as a slave.
About the Book
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trade she uses to get by—palm readings, zars, healings—are all tricks, sleights of hand, learned skills; a means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles.
But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to accept that the magical world she thought only existed in childhood stories is real. For the warrior tells her a new tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire, and rivers where the mythical marid sleep; past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises, and mountains where the circling hawks are not what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass, a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.
In that city, behind gilded brass walls laced with enchantments, behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments are simmering. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, she learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.
After all, there is a reason they say be careful what you wish for…
