Update: Life and Books (Jan 2025)

I’ve decided I’m going to focus on positive things for this month’s update. So first I have some art! I made fanart for I Was a Teenage Exocolonist. It started in December 2023 when someone posted on Reddit like, “I’ve never played, but this subreddit keeps showing up on my feed. Ask me about the game, and I’ll pretend I know.” Someone asked who Noctilucent should end up with, the person answered Vace, probably one of the only character names they knew, and it was the funniest possible answer because it was the worst possible answer. One is a human who hates the aliens, and the other is an alien who hates the humans, and they’re both violent and insufferable (well, Vace can genuinely change, and Noctilucent can reluctantly be convinced into an agreement, but still). The idea took root in my brain though, and it was still stuck in there a year later, so I finally made the art. I think it’s neat how inspiration can come from unexpected places. Also the responses I got from the Exocolonist community were so fun. Also it’s a great game, you should play it if you haven’t!

Digital art of Vace and Noctilucent from I Was a Teenage Exocolonist, as a couple. Vace is an athletic human with light/medium skin, hair that's shaved on the sides but longer and a mix of white, blonde, and brown on top, and some abstract tattoos near his eyes. Noctilucent is a centaur-like creature, but bottom half is a hefty purple and blue mass with thick hoofed legs and lobster-like claws that extend from the sides. The top half is purple with human arms but the chest opens down the middle exposing a dark red inside with a collar of gums and teeth. The face has crescent shaped all white eyes, no nose, what appears to be a mouth near the bottom, tusks, and some teeth or horns sticking out along the sides, and the top has some pointy bits. Vace is smirking, standing on one of Nocilucent's leg things, his other leg bent and kneeling on their back, his arms slung around their shoulders and hanging down against their chest, one hand loosely holding a gun. Noctilucent has a flowery gun in one hand, and their other hand is reaching back and resting on Vace's knee. Behind them is a dark purple and blue sky and big mushroom trees with glowing teal bulbs, which light the characters a bit from behind.

Cropped close up of the above image.

I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube shorts of this guy who does improvised dancing, and it’s amazing. It’s the exact kind of thing I would dream of doing as a kid, and then I got older and thought, “That kind of thing isn’t real, that’s just in movies, people can’t actually improvise like that.” Well, it turns out they can! I love how he explains things with text in the videos too. You don’t know how hard it was to pick just three lol.

Last but not least, a song. I used to listen to Semi-Charmed Life when I was a teen and it was popular, but that was the only Third Eye Blind song I knew. I heard this one recently though, and honestly I don’t even know what all the lyrics are, but there’s something about the sound and feel of it that I really like and makes me feel so nostalgic. I think it’s about someone who still has feelings for an ex, which is not what I’m feeling, but I think that can be a form of nostalgia, and this song definitely makes me feel something.

Blog/Bookish Updates:

Nothing.

Books I Received for Review:

I don’t think I got any (again).

Books I Finished:

How to Howl at the Moon by Eli EastonSeconhand Skin by Hailey TurnerKey Lime Sky by Al HessFire Spells Between Friends by Sarah Wallace & S.O. CallahanBright Spring by Emmaline Strange

If you’re considering buying any of these books from Amazon, I’d really appreciate if you’d use my affiliate link!

A month of queer romance! Though that’s not unusual, that’s mostly what I read lol.

✨ How to Howl at the Moon by Eli Easton – This was a reread of a favorite, and it was great again! I think I did find the cop character more frustrating sometimes, but overall a very cute romance.

Secondhand Skin by Hailey Turner – A fun addition to this series with a fun, lovable main character.

Key Lime Sky by Al Hess – A unique and sort of surreal alien invasion story.

✨ Fire Spells Between Friends by Sarah Wallace & S.O. Callahan – I loved this so much! Considering giving it full 5 stars. It was just so sweet and tender, and I was so into it.

Bright Spring by Emmaline Strange – It took me a bit to get into, and I had some complaints about the mystery, but overall cute and enjoyable.

I like your Vace and Noctilus artwork and that’s fun reading were the inspiration came from. I am glad I played that game, maybe in the future I’ll get back at it and get some other endings. That improv dancing is pretty cool, I watched some of the videos you linked and it’s interesting to see how they are telegraphing moves and the other goes with it.

I remember reading How to Howl at the Moon, but never got to continue the series as it’s in KU only. I remember liking that one. And I am so glad you got to listen to Key Lime Sky. I am hoping I can get to the first Sarah Wallace & S.O. Callahan soon as I am curious about that series.

Thanks 😊 It is really neat to not just see the dancing but also learn how the dancers work together and all that!

I also have only listened to the first book lol. Because it’s also only available on Audible I think, and I listened to this originally when they had a monthly program like KU but only this one was on it. And then I listened to it again with the Amazon Music trial I told you about. I feel like I’m getting your expectations too high for the Wallace & Callahan series haha, but hopefully you’ll like it!

Kit! I havent been here in ages! Nice art! that game looks fun, I just went over to Steam and I LOVE the art style!

Love the improvs! that stuff is so fun. It’s like falling down a rabbit hole too. You watch one, then another, and pretty soon a half hour went by…

Key Lime Sky (adds). I’ve been wanting to read Hess for a while (thanks to your blog I think) but haven’t yet…
