Update: Life and Books (Sep 2023) + I Drew More Things!

So a bit of real life… My energy levels have been worsening for a while, and I felt like I was spending more and more time in a haze, struggling to focus, trying and failing to keep my eyes open. I thought my illness was just worsening. Turns out I’ve been living with CO2 poisoning from a poorly ventilated room. Which is good, to have figured it out! But also bad because there’s no good solution. I’ll have to try and do something though (my current solution is temporary). I can’t just keep living like that. I’m still exhausted because chronic illness, but the difference is definitely noticeable. Anyway…

I played an indie game called The Outbreak Story. I don’t normally play combat-heavy games like this, but it caught my attention. I ended up having to cheat the boss fight, but overall it was fun.

I also played Moonstone Island and got totally sucked in! It’s part farming sim, part monster collecting/battles. I am a little disappointed that the romances and characters don’t have a lot of depth, but overall the game has been super fun.

I’ve been making my way through JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. It’s such a ridiculous show, but it has grown on me. I didn’t expect it to make me almost cry! I’ve been told Season 3 and on is the better stuff, and I’m almost done with Season 2, so we’ll see.

As mentioned, I drew some more things! Actually I initially drew this first one on a whim like two years ago as a sort of joke. But I was feeling stuck on my other art and saw it in my in-progress folder and decided to just do better line art and add color, and it was fun.

Digital art in a fairly simple style of a modern cyclops looking lovestruck, resting his head on his hand and looking off screen. He has dark skin, shortish black hair swooped to one side, a teal blue eye, a teal v-neck shirt, and a small silver hoop earring. Pink background with some red hearts near his head.

And I made some Project Zomboid fanart! I was going to do one for each of what I consider my four main characters (the ones I used to explore the four different starting towns), but this was way too much work, and I can’t imagine drawing three more. This one is Cole, who survived all this, but I had to stop playing with him because I could no longer access his save file. The text is little snippets from the radio broadcasts in the game.

Digital art of a man sitting cross legged in a corner, holding a small radio with little lines indicating it is making sound. Text floating around his head reads,

I also wanted to share this YouTube channel, or the shorts at least. This man cooks these masterful meals—makes bread from scratch even!—out in nature, makes ovens out of mud and fire, cooks on rocks, etc. And it’s all so beautiful! Truly the romanticized ideal you imagine when you think about eating wild food out in nature. (To be fair some of his ingredients are probably from the store, but some are fresh picked/caught.)

Blog/Bookish Updates:

Nothing this month.

Books I Received for Review:

Fiorenzo by Sebastian Nothwell, from BookSirens. Born of Scourge by S. Jean, from the author. Both are books from authors whose previous books I’ve enjoyed, so I’m excited for more!

Books I Finished:

Teach the Torches to Burn by Caleb RoehrigThe Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez

I have really slowed up on reading (or listening) lately. I’ve just been more in the mood to listen to podcasts or YouTube videos. People chatting kinda stuff. Books feel more isolated and require more focus, and sometimes my brain just struggles with that. But I managed a few.

If you’re considering buying one of the books below from Amazon, I’d really appreciate if you’d use my affiliate link!

In Darkness and Dank by K.L. Hiers – A gay retelling of The Creature from the Black Lagoon. I didn’t really believe the romance, but it was a fun idea.

Teach the Torches to Burn by Caleb Roehrig – This was a really nice queer retelling of Romeo & Juliet!

The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez – Queer fantasy. POV chaos, but really interesting characters, especially the villains, and a beautiful story.

Half Bad // Half Wild by Sally Green – I really felt for the MC, and the audiobook narrator was really great. I have the final book from the library, just have to listen to it.

Talk to me!

Have you found any good books, games, etc. lately?
Do you like farming sims?

CO2 poisoning! Wow. that sounds… serious. Thank goodness you discovered that!

Moonstone sounds fun. I’ve been on Steam a lot lately since I’ve been gaming again and there are so many cool looking games I want to play…

I love the cyclops guy (can I call him that?)

Yeah I don’t think it was deadly sort of serious? And I sleep and eat in a different room. But it was definitely having an effect.

Moonstone has been so much fun! My problem is that there are so many games I want to play that just aren’t out yet or are in early access and unfinished.

Thanks! Yep, he is a cyclops guy!

How the heck did it happen?!? I’m assuming air conditioning?

Nice to get a reminder of your art after seeing it on Twitter…and now I’m thinking of that poor guy in limbo because you can’t access his save file anymore…😂

It’s because I keep this vent closed, because my parents keep the house too cold, and even with the vent closed I have to run a space heater. I don’t want to open the door to my parents’ part of the house because they’re not covid safe, so I open this other door that connects to another room sometimes, but either I’ve forgotten to lately or it’s not enough. My parents have been away, so I was able to air out the room. But now my mom is back. I’ll have to try opening the window, but idk how well that will work, and bugs will get in, and it’ll get too cold out, and I don’t want people seeing into my room when it’s dark out…

You know… he might be better off lol. I was thinking about adding things or changing settings to make his game increasingly harder until either he died or I got bored. But he had a little house and water and crops, so he’s probably ok!

As you said, it’s good that it hasn’t been from your chronic illness! but on the other hand.. what do we do to help having this information can be tricky 😅 What comes into my mind would be to install a fan maybe? one of those that jam in the window so the air can get changed..

    Moonstone island looks so cute!

I’m glad it wasn’t your chronic illness but sorry to hear that it was CO2 poisoning. hopefully you’re able to sort the situation out long term.

I struggle enough with making fresh bread in my oven, I can’t imagine trying to do it in the wilderness. I’m intrigued though!
