Bookish Musings: 3 Book & Song Match-Ups (6) – In Which I Gush about The Darkness Outside Us

Normally for these posts, I do three different books and pick one song for each. This time I’m doing three songs for the same book! Because it’s an amazing book and the absolute perfect kind of book to pair songs with. At least for me, because the reason books and songs go so well together is that they both make me feel, and, well, this book made me feel A LOT.

I won’t be able to explain all my reasons for choosing these songs because of spoilers, but that’s ok. One of the things I love about these choices is how well they capture the vibe. At least, the vibe as *I* feel it. So you’ll just have to trust me even if I can’t explain!

Book: The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer

The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer

Goodreads // Amazon // My Review

Song: “I’m Lost Without You” by blink-182

Why It’s Perfect:

“Are you afraid of being alone? // ‘Cause I am, I’m lost without you.” “I will go down as your lover, your friend // Give me your lips and with one kiss, we begin.” Also something about the sounds in this one give me a sort of lonely space feel. Is it just me?

Song: “You Are My Planet” by Quiet Arrows

Why It’s Perfect:

There’s the space metaphor used throughout this one, which obviously fits with the fact that this book is set in space. But there’s also the love, which is a powerful part of the story. And this is just a beautiful song, which works too because it’s a beautiful book.

Song: “Freak Like Me” by Transviolet

Why It’s Perfect:

This one is maybe less fitting lyrically, but I feel like, “Is there anybody out there, hello can you hear me, or am I just screaming to the void?” is fitting for the space aspect, and, “I’m not looking for a savior, I just need somebody telling me I’m not in this alone,” is fitting for the beautiful relationship that forms between these two boys. (I’m noticing a pattern here. All of my reasoning is apparently, “This song because space and love!” 😅) I feel like the vibe and sound of the song works really well too.

Anyway, I love all these songs, so hopefully you liked them too, and go check out the book if you like outer space and love and beautiful, thought-provoking stories that will make you cry!

The only book I have found that is perfect to a song is Shatter me by Tahereh Mafi. And the song Shatter me by Lindsey Stirling.

I love how sometimes certain songs just seem to go with books so well. For me I think sometimes it’s just that combination of mood and maybe hearing a song at just the right time, or maybe some just go well together and it’s that simple. Love the Transviolet song.
