Book Review: My Roommate from Hell by Cale Dietrich [Audiobook]

Owen just wants to make friends and do well in school so he can get a good job, but on his first day of college, he finds out he has a roommate from Hell, figuratively and literally. With an internship and human-demon relations on the line, the two end up in a fake relationship, Owen starts to realize having Zarmenus as a roommate and a friend isn't so bad after all.

Review:

This was fun! It was lighthearted and made me smile or laugh sometimes. Zarmenus really was the roommate from Hell at the start, but in a way that was highly entertaining for me. Poor Owen.

But one of the best things about this book for me was how relatable Owen felt. I am over a decade past my college years, but this book took me back to them, in a way. I could very much relate to the bit of anxiety and awkwardness that Owen had about going to things and being around people he didn’t know and wanting to make friends, stuff like that. And his reactions to the chaos of Zarmenus were also probably how I would feel too. He was just so normal, but in a good way. Endearing and believable.

Though Zarmenus turned out to be endearing too. He made some mistakes as a roommate, but he was not a bad guy. He was surprisingly sweet, actually. He was technically a demon, but ultimately not all that different from human teens.

The book was mostly about these two being roommates and then fake dating, but there was also stuff about Owen’s other friendships, and the pressures being put on them by parents or life, and teens figuring things out. And all the characters in this book who were meant to be likeable were in fact likeable and doing their best, and that’s just nice. Conflict was kept relatively mild, making this a pretty chill, stress-free book.

The audiobook narration by Zach Barela was great. It was natural and suited the main character. I don’t remember if voices were different for different characters, but I know I was never confused.

Overall, this was a fun, chill book with endearing teen characters!
