Cover Characteristics: Book Covers from Books I Read in 2015

Now that 2015 is coming to an end, I really wanted to share some of the amazing book covers I have fallen in love with.

But I've realized I'm kind of a bitch when it comes to book covers, and I've become one even more so as the year has gone on and I've seen more and more of them. I was going to write this whole spiel about what I do and don't like in book covers, but I've decided to save it for a discussion post instead, so keep an eye out for that :-)

I did manage to find some good covers though! I'm actually surprised by the covers that made my top ten. And apparently I like red and blue, though, knowing myself, I'm kind of shocked they didn't all have red in them :-P

But enough chit-chat, time to look at the pretty pictures!

Cover Characteristics is a weekly meme normally hosted at Sugar & Snark. But this week I’m doing my own thing, so, even though it’s not exactly a characteristic, my topic is:

The Elite by Kiera Cass | books, reading, book covers, cover love
The One by Kiera Cass | books, reading, book covers, cover love

Some people love these covers, some don’t think they’re anything special, but I’ve always liked them.

The Eden Trilogy by Keary Taylor

The Bane by Keary Taylor | books, reading, book covers, cover love
The Human by Keary Taylor | books, reading, book covers, cover love
The Eve by Keary Taylor | books, reading, book covers, cover love

I have always thought these covers were so badass and a great representation of the character.

It’s just so pretty and has some nice editing with the reflection in the water, the wings, all of it.

The Girl in Between Series by Laekan Zea Kemp

The Boy in Her Dreams by Laekan Zea Kemp | books, reading, book covers, cover love
The Children of the Moon by Laekan Zea Kemp | books, reading, book covers, cover love

I actually didn’t realize until I saw all three covers next to each other that the moon is rising higher in each one. That first one totally pulled me in though with it’s mysterious, otherworldly fantasy vibe.

Core by Teshelle Combs

I used this one another week this year, and it’s so simple, but I love it. The black cover with the contrast and simplicity just calls to me.

Dark Carousel Series by Anya Allyn

Dollhouse by Anya Allyn | reading, books
Paper Dolls by Anya Allyn | reading, books
Marionette by Anya Allyn | reading, books
Music Box by Anya Allyn | reading, books

The colors are so gorgeous and the pictures and font so eerie. I especially love the one for Marionette. Update: The covers for this series have been changed (the originals were black and teal), so this post now shows the new covers since those just so happen to be even better!

Drown by Esther Dalseno

This is another I’ve used, but it’s so beautiful and perfect for the fairy tale vibe of the story.

The Sea Witch by S.J. Valfroy

I know I also used this recently, but that’s because I love it! The bold colors are so pretty, and I especially love the tentacles in her hair.

INK Series by Bella Roccaforte

Abstraction by Bella Roccaforte | books, reading, book covers, cover love
Fine Lines by Bella Roccaforte | books, reading, book covers, cover love
Sketches by Bella Roccaforte | books, reading, book covers, cover love

I’m cheating a little since I read the first book in this series the last few days of December 2014, but I have no explanation for why I read it in the first place other than the cover. So if not for this cover with its pretty red and black, I’d not have found one of my absolute favorite series. (P.S. It’s permafree on Amazon, so check it out!)

Trailer Park Fae by Lilith Saintcrow

I may be a little (ok, a lot) obsessed with this cover. But look at that cover, people!

LOOK AT IT! Not only is this the urban fantasy style of cover art I like best, and not only is the concept executed beautifully, this cover is true artistry. That’s a painting, people. A gorgeous painting. Like, someone held a paintbrush in his hand and created that on a blank piece of paper. Amazing. You can check out more of Dan dos Santos’s work here.

The Girl In Between series might be my faves- and I never would have noticed the moon rising in the first two if you hadn’t mentioned it. I like all three of those, although maybe the second one the most- they just seem to show some other realm.

The Bane covers are good too, with a badassery vibe and the first one kinda looks like she’s in a jungle or something. Interesting. And Trailer Park Fae is awesome, I love fantasy art and this one delivers. I’ll be checking out more of Dos Santos’ stuff…

I’ll go with The Girl In Between, with Trailer Park a very close second. 🙂

    1. Kristen Burns

The Girl in Between is showing this kind of dream realm. The other two covers, I’m not even sure because I can’t remember exactly what happened. But they’re still pretty.

There are actually no jungles in The Eden Trilogy, despite the plant life on the covers, but the character still lives up to the badassery.

And of course I love it when anyone else likes the Trailer Park Fae cover lol. So good choices 😛

Dark Carousel and The Girl In-between look absolutely gorgeous. I completely adore the covers for the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children series. They are just fantastic. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Kristen Burns

I definitely started both of those series because of their covers lol. I mean, the blurbs sounded interesting too, but I absolutely couldn’t resist those covers. Miss Peregrine’s does have great covers! The first book is on my TBR 🙂

  3. Cait @ Paper Fury

I really adore those Selection covers! 😀 I’m a sucker for a gorgeous dress (I mean, I wear the most plain clothes of ever myself…but preeeetty dresses are just PRETTY to behold *nods sagely*) I also really like those Girl in Between because of the moon rising! I love it when series covers match so well and so cleverly. 😀

    1. Kristen Burns

Yes to the dress thing! I swear my closet is like 95% solid colors, and I wear nothing but jeans and shorts and t-shirts and tanktops, but I still looking at pretty dresses and imagining that one day I will totally wear stuff like that! (I won’t. I have a love-hate relationship with dressing up which basically means I say I love it but I’m always the least dressed-up person wherever I go lol.)

I am looking forward to your discussion post about covers. It’s always fun to hear what other like and don’t when it comes to covers. I really like all the covers you listed. The Selection has such a pretty cover and I wanted to read it partly because of that. I really like the covers for The Girl in Between series, they are really pretty. I didn’t realize that about the moon, but it sure is a nice touch! The cover for Trailer Park Fea is so stunning, I really like that cover designer his work, all his covers look stunning with a lot of detail.

    1. Kristen Burns

The Selection originally caught my attention because of the cover too. But then I ended up reading it because it was so popular and I felt like I was out of the loop. The rising moon is definitely a nice touch on the Girl in Between covers. And I am always glad when someone else appreciates the Trailer Park Fae cover lol. SO MUCH DETAIL. I want to own all the books with his covers.

  5. Shannon @ It Starts At Midnight

I LOVE the look of the Girl In Between series! And I have always loved The Selection’s covers, I guess I am just a sucker for a pretty dress 😉 Of the books I have read this year, I think my favorite cover is Air Awakens! SO pretty. I also love The Love that Split the World’s cover- it may be a tie, but if I HAD to pick, I’d probably have to give the nod to Air Awakens 🙂

    1. Kristen Burns

I’m a sucker for a pretty dress too. I don’t even wear dresses, but I like to pretend I do and always want them lol. The covers you mentioned are both super pretty! I agree with your pick of Air Awakens over the other though. I just like the art style more on that one.
