I also included a little bonus at the end just for funzies ;-)
Cover Characteristics is a weekly meme hosted at Sugar & Snark. This week’s topic is:
Books Covers featuring Skulls
Mortal Ties by Eileen Wilks
I love the style of this one, and the glow coming from the skull is a really nice touch.
Shield and Crocus by Michael R. Underwood
The giant skull in the background is pretty cool.
Skulduggery Pleasant Series
These look so fun, and he looks like such a dapper yet mischievous skeleton.
The Necromancer by Katerina Martinez
This one is just pretty.
Touched by A.J. Aalto
I also just think this one is so pretty.
Much of Madness by S.E. Summa
I LOVE the bright colors and the combination of red and teal, and the overall design is just great too.
Revenge by Anna Santos
I love the style of this art, and the whole pictures is so pretty and interesting.
The Last Necromancer by C.J. Archer
I love everything about this one—the colors, the dress, the background, the skull lantern—but I already chose it as my favorite another week and figured another cover deserved the chance to shine this time.
Unsympathetic Magic by Laura Resnick
I also completely love this one because it’s such an amazing and gorgeous painting—but again, I already chose it as a favorite another week.
My Favorite:
Zombie Ocean Series
I may be pushing it since technically these are zombies, but the ones in the last cover especially look pretty darn skeletal, and I just LOVE these covers. They’re a tiny bit gruesome, but they’re also amazing little pieces of art, and I love how bold and eye-catching they are!
Bonus: Shot Glasses!
I know it’s a terrible photo, but these are two of my favorite shot glasses from my collection. The Jack Skellington one was actually the one that started it all. I was on a vacation at Disney and wanted a souvenir but couldn’t find anything I actually wanted… except that. So I decided right then and there to start a collection. The other one I lovingly refer to as my blinged out pirate shot glass 🙂
I dont know what it is about skulls, but whenever I see one on the book cover, it is bound to attract my attention. Out of those that you shared, I like the best Much & Madness!
That one is so eye-catching! And there is just something awesome about skulls on covers 🙂
Ahh it seems like there are definitely so many books with skulls on them now – I hadn’t realised! The Skulduggery Pleasant series is my favourite – so many childhood memories! 😀
Haha, that happens with almost every topic. You never realize how many book covers have a certain on them until you start looking! I’ve never actually read the Skulduggery Pleasant series, but I know it’s popular and well-liked 🙂
Great covers! I really love the ‘Touched’ cover! I ended up with a Skullduggery on mine as well!
Kudos for the shot glasses! Now I feel like I should have added in some of the skulls around my house or my skull cup! It’s not weird that I leave my Halloween-ish skull decorations up all year long, is it? haha
I totally obsessed over the Touched cover when I first saw it lol. And those Skulduggery ones are pretty cool, so I guess great minds think alike 🙂
Thanks! Yeah, I’ve been getting a little outside the box with this meme, haha. But blogging is about having fun, and I thought posting my shot glasses would be fun 😛 And nah, you leave your decorations up for however long you want!
Skulls- nice topic. 🙂 I like Mortal Ties with the whole graveyard thing, and Necromancer might be my favorite, but no that goes to either Revenge or The Last Necromancer. Necromancer has the face paint and the purple thing going on, Revenge is just dark and I like it, and The Last Necromancer has the green (and I remember that one). Good stuff.
The Resnick one is good though too (why is there a snake coiled around her lol) and Much of Madness is interesting too. Tough to pick a fave this week!
Nice shot glass, I like the pirate one. 😛
Haha yes, we both love that Last Necromancer one. SO GORGEOUS. But I also love the Revenge one. I was sooooooo tempted to request it on Netgalley, but I’m trying to be good and only request the books that REALLY sound like I’ll love them. And the Resnick one is a Dan dos Santos cover, so you know I love it lol.
Thanks! I do love my blinged out pirate shot glass 😛
Much of Madness is my favorite! I wanted to like this book so much.. Unfortunately it joined the ever growing DNF pile. You are right in that they are PERRRRFECT for Urban Fantasy [that reminds me, did you get your Sanctum book yet?] There is something about skulls and me… a fatal attraction I’d say 🙂
great collection Kristen!
I was so tempted to request it because of the cover, but now you’ve made me feel better that I passed on it. But no… I did not get Sanctum yet lol. I still have like nine review copies plus other books that I’ve just been dying to read but have been putting off and THERE ARE TOO MANY FREAKING BOOKS TO READ! Anyway lol, it does not surprise me that you drawn to books with skulls on them, what with your dark, edgy side 😉 Thanks!
Shield and Crocus might be my favourite out of all these covers!
I LOVE SKULLS and those shot glasses are perfect. Thanks for sharing then 😉
If I see a book caver with a skull (/skeleton) on it, I’m usually really intrigued, immediately. But then, I handle a lot of bones in my studies (which is maybe why I’m so morbid?) so they just have a way of grabbing my attention I guess.
Thanks for sharing, this is an awesome post!
That’s such an interesting cover, right?!
Haha thank you, I’m glad you like my shot glasses 🙂
It’s funny how we all have certain things that kind of pull us in immediately to books. But ok wait, what exactly is it that you’re studying in which you handle lots of bones? Lol.
I basically want to *steal* your shot glasses, sorry 😉
I’m in the archaeology department! I study palaeopathology which looks at disease in ancient contexts. I sit in a bone lab a lot, which explains why I’m awkward, probably. I talk to dead people all day 😉 OHMYGOSH I’m SUCH a morbid person! I don’t usually realise it haha
You can’t have them! They’re MINE! 😛
Very cool! I’ve never known anyone who studies or works in that field. Eh, who cares if it makes you a bit morbid? It also makes you interesting 🙂
You found so many great covers!
Thanks!
Wonderful covers!!! I am in love with the cover for “Much for Madness” I haven’t heard of that one before!!
Feel free to pop over and check out my Cover Characteristic
Shubba @ Wee Shubba’s World.
Thanks! That cover is so bright and pretty, I love it too!
Brilliant post! When I think of skulls, pirate books generally pops into my mind but that’s probably because I’m obsessed with pirates.
My favorite cover from this post would have to be The Last Necromancer. I seriously need to read that book now.
I love finding out the random things people are obsessed with 😀 I don’t think I’ve ever actually read about pirates though, unless you count Captain Hook in Peter Pan lol. But yes, I completely agree with The Last Necromancer. I want to read it so badly just because of that cover!
My last holiday at Disney I got a big ass Jack Skellington mug which I then preceded to cradle for our extensive journey home from Florida to Glasgow in case it got broken.
I have to start the Zombie Ocean series, it looks good and those covers are a little freaky!
Haha, so you understand my love for Jack and why I need that shot glass so badly I started a collection just to own it! But wow, all the way from Florida to Glasgow, that’s intense.
I actually have all three of the Zombie Ocean books because I got them free on Amazon and I absolutely couldn’t resist those covers! They’re a good kind of a freaky lol. Now I just have to get around to reading them!
Skulls is definitely a good topic for urban fantasy and fantasy books as quite some of them have skulls on the cover. I am not a big fan of skulls or skeletons on covers as I find them creepy usually, but you sure found some nice ones!
I think the last Necromancer one is my favourite as I like how the skull is handles and the overall feel fo the cover with the steampunk like style and the glowing green skull.
Thanks! I don’t think skulls in particular draw me in the way they apparently do a lot of people, but I think they can definitely make a cover interesting.
Ugh, I love that cover too! I don’t tend to like steampunk books, but I do seem to love their covers lol.
That cover of Revenge looks bad-ass and I love your shot glasses!
Thanks for joining in last week 🙂
Sugar & Snark
Right?! I love that one! And thank you 🙂
